The devil can make himself look like God...but he is still the devil!

I got up this morning and after going through my usual routine I decided to check out the news. Turned on the computer and for some bizarre reason, I click over to the NY Times and found this article: Godless.
I should really know better by now not to read the NY Times but...no there is no but, I should just know better. The basis of the article, is that, for the rest of the election Mr. Egan doesn't want to hear about God. He goes on to list numerous quotes, from President Kennedy and how he believed in separation of Church and State, and Presidents shouldn't express their religion. The latter was a quote he printed from Pres. Kennedy, but what Mr. Egan forgets to mention is that in Pres. Kennedy's day people were looking at him crossed-eyed for being a Roman Catholic. Here are a few snippets of the article:
"...It’s a start, but how about a clean break? Let’s go Godless for the rest of the campaign.
I know, it’s not going to happen, with Obama courting evangelicals this week and McCain trying to figure what makes Catholics in the Rust Belt tick.
But for a moment, imagine no religion, as John Lennon sang.
Forty-eight years ago an Irish Catholic presidential candidate said this about a bedrock principle of his:
“I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute.”
And, “I believe in a president whose views on religion are his own private affair.” That was John F. Kennedy, of course, sounding light years removed from Mitt Romney, who declared this year that “freedom requires religion,” and Mike Huckabee, who called himself a “Christian leader” and advocated amending the Constitution to follow Biblical principles. Both men are being touted as running mates for McCain.
...Teddy Roosevelt, a McCain hero, was prescient on this point as well. He argued against putting, “In God We Trust,” on the currency in 1907, saying it cheapens the divine. “It not only does no good,” he wrote, “but it does positive harm.”
I won't inflict you with anymore of the article. What bothers me is that this guy actually believes that he is right. It is true the Founding Fathers came up with the idea of separation of Church and State, but he doesn't even begin to understand what that means. The Founding Fathers desired to produce a government (and society) out of religion, not a religion out of government. They all expressed a belief in God, and yes that God was Christ, the principals were Christian centered. Some were Deists, others were different denominations, in fact, and the variety of Christian beliefs was abundant for the time.
Puritans, Baptists, Quakers, and the list goes on. If you had told the Founding Fathers that God was a subject to be ridiculed by public officials you would have been castigated. George Washington, during the beginning of the Revolutionary war ordered his officers to say prayers with their troops.
Unfortunately, I don't have the time to critically respond to Mr. Egan today, I have to pack later and get ready to move, but I will say this he is dead wrong!
Religion, specifically, Christianity was a part of this country from before we were a country, and to try and remove it will do nothing but bring the walls down around the castle. Religion and faith can be blamed for many things. Yet, in reality what people do is to blame God for things that man has done and God never intended. In a country of 300 million people, the majority of whom are Christians, as well as all the other faiths, to propose having an election without discussing God or matters of faith is simply evil in my opinion.
Yes it is true that many do not believe in God in this country or have alternate beliefs all together, but that doesn't mean that the concept of God should be taboo. The first amendment of the Constitution is probably the most misunderstood two sentences in this country today. President Dwight D. Eisenhower once said, "Without God, there could be no form of government nor American way of life. Recognition of a Supreme Being is the first --and most basic --expression of Americanism." This was said from a man who saw us through some of the toughest times in the last century so I think we should listen to what he has said.
When people talk about let's go Godless, what they are really saying is that, you are making me feel uncomfortable with all this 'God stuff', because you are pointing out all the things I am doing wrong. Porn is great, drugs are fine, free sex (remember the 60's) the way to go, but you mention God and oh man you have done it now there goes the neighborhood.
Now I am not saying if you are not a Christian (or in my case a Greek Orthodox Christian) you are going to hell. Salvation is up to God and only He can grant that to us. What I am saying is that I as a Christian want to know what my leaders think about things that need to be viewed through the eyes of a believer. It bothers me to no end that Obama spent 20 years in a Church with a so-called Christian pastor who saw fit to preach in a bigoted way on many occasions. It bothers me that politicians can so easily justify abortion but can’t stand to talk about God. For all you married folk, when you and your wife got pregnant, how often before your child was born did you call it a fetus? “Hi honey, work was okay today how are you and the fetus doing are?” I don’t think so!
The question we should be asking ourselves is why so many are so willing to throw God out. Because it makes things easier, it removes all accountability and allows for the anything goes crowd to hoot and holler! Morals are fine and good but what are those morals based upon? Can we not have that discussion? I think we can and I think people like Mr. Egan simply want us to shut our mouths and march goose stepping in to the voting booth. I won’t abide that as long as I have a breath left in me.
I know that many people have done many terrible things in the name of religion and faith, and yes that includes Christianity. But if we can’t bring ourselves to discuss God with our own leaders then how will we ever be able to prevent future horrors? The answer is that without discussing God then we can’t. Without discussing God we won’t be able to tell the Bible thumper, the Koran thumper (and all the other little thumpers out there) that they are doing something wrong and are hurting people terribly! You can’t use a moral argument because if it doesn’t suite someone then eventually they will say that this is [name the behavior] okay for me.
The Mr. Egans of the world should go back to their colleges and universities and ask for their money back because they just never got it!
You can believe in the kitchen sink if you want, but you as an American, always have a right to discuss that belief, and to question your leaders. As a matter of fact, it is our obligation to question our leaders about everything, and in my opinion especially matters of faith. God bless America we need your help now more than ever!
