The Bush vs. Clinton legacies.

Last night on Brit Hume the panel was discussing the Bush legacy. They mentioned that each President is remembered primarily for one big thing. Bush’s legacy will be Iraq and the War on Terror. The panel agreed that if things continue to go well in Iraq, Bush’s legacy will be immense. Fred Barnes also mentioned that the fact that we have had no attacks on our soil since 9/11, nearly seven years, which no one expected, will not go unnoticed by historians.

I started thinking about President Clinton’s legacy. The one big thing that he will be remembered for is his Impeachment and Monica Lewinsky. And now if things continue to go well for Obama, the fact that Mr. Clinton’s wife was rejected by the his own Party for a smooth-talking slick communicator, the one that Rush has called the “first black Clinton,” will not go unnoticed by historians.

All in all I think Bush wins the legacy fight.

Seems character trumps! by Sheila Frush

The one who worried most about "legacy", while having no character, winds up with no legacy...

W has had character, he is a leader who knows history will tell the tale, and hasn't worried about "legacy"...he just does what he knows is right for the country.

Character matters.

than Clinton, but I doubt if he will ever be more than a controversial historical figure. He did the right thing on a few important issues, but he got so much of the detail wrong and nearly blew it all.

Could you give some examples? by Sandra Lea Wise

Yes, the war didn't go perfectly, but what war does? The thing is to win it. What details do you mean in other areas?

Because you may disagree with him on specific details, those are your details, not his. What did he nearly blow?

around for about two years too long.
Then we can move to domestic policy, like the medicare prescription plan,
How about Harriet Meirs and Alberto Gonzales?
How about not ever, and I mean EVER fighting against the lies of the democrats?
How about waiting till his seventh year as president to try an secure the borders?

Lots of mistakes.

Those are your opinions. by Sandra Lea Wise

Mistakes are things that produce a bad outcome. None of the things that you mentioned can be measured in terms of a bad outcome for the country.

if I pull out a gun in and fire it in a crowd it is not a mistake if no one i hurt right?

As a matter of fact, his foot dragging on Iraq hurt and killed a lot of our servicemen. Now I expect there are many to disagree with me, but I also suspect that the weight of history will see things the same way. We will also be paying the price for that medicare fiasco for decades.

Look, I don't think he has been a terrible president, but certainly not a good one. If he had been a good leader would the Republican party be at its lowest ebb since the post Watergate era?

Like I said, he did a few things right, and he hung tough on the war which was necessary, so he will have a better legacy than Clinton who basically did nothing. But I doubt he will ever be considered a great president.

You can't predict war. by Sandra Lea Wise

I'm glad he did hang in there despite the country turning against the war and him.

As to why Republicans are at their lowest ebb since the Watergate era, I think it's because the base of the party gives up too easily and falls for a lot of the propaganda that the Libs put out. You said Bush didn't defend himself, and it seems that no one else defended him either.

I got chewed up here at Red State and called a sycophant for defending Bush.

You must be a Liberal Kyle. by shooflyguy68

Just kidding, of course. I think President Bush's legacy will be largely dependent on the outcome of the Iraqi war with perhaps some credit for his support of AIDS programs in Africa. At home, his legacy is definitely mixed.

I disagree, Kyle...:) by Sheila Frush

Tax cuts, National security,pro-life, pro- marriage, conservative justices, success in Iraq, Afghanistan, gaining pro-western support in Europe...W will go down as one of our best presidents.

Her losing the primary tarnishes his legacy, it's why I still think they will (behind the scenes) sabotage Obama - it gives them 2 points, "see you should have nominated me, I would have won" and "2012."

Good point... by Sheila Frush

we haven't heard the last of the co-presidents...:)

It's about twenty years too soon for it. Nixons rep isn't as bad as it appeared it would be and Truman is pretty much a hero. Then there's Jimmy.

This will be an interesting discussion at RS5.0, but it's just a distractioñx and a meaningless one - now.
