Democratic Copperheads fought for defeat in 1864- just like today...

It is amazing as a historian to see the exact same forces of 150 years ago resurface today.

Does THIS sound like anyone we know?!!

"After four years of failure...by the experience of war... we demand that immediate efforts be made for a cessation of hostilities.. with a view to an ultimate convention or other peaceable means to the end that peace may be restored on the basis of the Federal Union"

This crucial resolution of the DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION made peace the first priority- and Union a distant second.

Republicans and Confederates considered it thus. "It contemplates surrender and abasement" wrote a New York Republican.

Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens declared joyfully "it presents the first ray of real light I have seen since the war began."

However, President George McClellan was not to be. For on September 3, 1864 one Republican newspaper's headline read:

VICTORY.
Is the war a failure?
