Obama campaign's response to Ferraro's charge of sexism:

"She is just being hysterical."

These were the exact words used by Dick Harpootlian on the Brian & the Judge show on Fox Radio on 5/21- I'm trying to find an online reference to this but I heard it myself driving in to the office this morning.

For those who don't get it, from Wikipedia:

"Hysteria: The term originates with the Greek medical term, hysterikos. This referred to a medical condition, thought to be particular to women, caused by disturbances of the uterus, hystera in Greek."

A dog whistle is supposed to get people to say "ah, he just used a code word that tells me that he's on my side on this thing".

It's not supposed to get your opponents to say "OH MY GOSH I CAN'T BELIEVE HE JUST SAID THAT"... unless, of course, there's a good portion of polite society saying it loudly but privately nodding to themselves and saying "yeah, that works".

But if all you are doing is ticking off the opposition but not really firing up your base at the same time?

Dude, that's a Kerry level-move.

(And, for the record, the "reverse dog whistle" should not be read as "OH SO IT'S A CAT WHISTLE??? WHAT'S ANOTHER NAME FOR CATS?????? SEXISM!!!!!!!!!!!" but a description of how it's doing what the opposite of what dog whistles do.)
