Does John McCain Know of A Coup d'etat?

Before my fellow conservatives jump my case for the title, read it.

Mind you, that the term '48 hours' certainly sounds definitive, especially when used in the context of an 'underdog'. And it is that literal interpretation that has the liberal web buzzing today. John McCain was reported, in one online article, at FoxNews as having said: "'I’m the underdog. I’m behind,' the presumptive GOP nominee told reporters in Ohio. 'I’ve got to catch up and get ahead. And I expect to do that about 48 hours before the general election,' he said with a laugh."

From 'remember that terrorist attack comment would benefit McCain', to 'he knows something', to 'another GOP Coup d'etat in the works': liberals have picked up on the message. But have they bothered to find out what the terms used together could mean? Was it meant literally? Could a laugh indicate it was something else? The language of politics is never literal, and nothing in politics is happenstance, unless it is a major mistake.

As a student of history, especially military history, McCain certainly knows what the term 'about 48 hours' is. Also as a student of history, his laugh may imply he knows what it means and was taunting the reporters to find out. Let us take a stroll and find out for ourselves.

'Underdog': means the condition of being "a loser or predicted loser in a struggle or contest" but it also means,
"a victim of injustice or persecution", a condition I am all too familiar with. (Merriam-Webster)

'General election': This is not the day of the election. It is THE 'General Election'. "an election held at regular intervals in which candidates are elected in all or most constituencies of a nation or state," (Merriam-Webster.) That 'general election' begins when the two candidates have been named by their respective parties. That places the 'general election' starting upon McCain's selection, not the date of voting. McCain will be tapped on September 4, 2008. That places any literal 48 hours prior, on September 2, 2008, not the election day in November. Is something drastically large going to happen DURING the Republican convention? That would be stupid. Although it has been reported that the FBI is recruiting people to infiltrate crowds at the Republican convention and has dramatically ramped up security.

'About 48 hours': A very definitive term, which can either mean 'time' or something else, or both, or perhaps a 'nickname'?

Recently the White House, selected reporters and pundits have compared George W. Bush to Abraham Lincoln. On December 3, 2007 as ThinkProgress reported: Glenn Beck, referred to George W. Bush as, "...He said a few things that were breathtaking, and my immediate response was, ‘Why are you not saying this?’ and he explained. I can’t quote him. All I can say is that he has Abraham Lincoln-honorable reasons … he has chosen not to say certain things..."

The term 'about 48 hours' was not meant as a compliment when it was coined in history to refer to a person. It was during the first Civil War (if you remember a campaign debate during the 2000 election cycle, good ol' Al Sharpton stated we were in a civil war) that Abner Doubleday gained that nickname because of his indecision in battle. Doubleday is best known as the inventor of Baseball (although that is disputed in some circles.) His real claim to fame though, may have a great deal to do with John McCain. Could it?

During McCain's speech at CPAC, he stated, "I know in this country our liberty will not be seized in a political revolution or by a totalitarian government. But, rather, as Burke warned, it can be "nibbled away, for expedience, and by parts." I am alert to that risk and will defend against it, and take comfort from the knowledge that I will be encouraged in that defense by my fellow conservatives."

Doubleday was the very first to defend the Union at the start of the first Civil War. As a Captain stationed at Fort Sumpter, in South Carolina (the state now represented in the Senate by senior Senator Lindsey Graham), Doubleday fired the first cannon shot in defense of the Union on April 12, 1861. He defended against a revolution. He crowned himself a 'hero' for his action at Fort Sumpter. McCain would never do such a thing.

Beyond that comparison, there is very little in common between Doubleday and McCain. McCain certainly is not indecisive. Or is there something more? Should the literal interpretation of McCain's laugh be for real (as our literal liberal friends have mused): he would have proved the concerns about his age matters. Anything planned for 48 hours before election day would not have the time to catch on and matter, and would backfire beyond belief. This day of instant Internet rage would do it in.

If there is something planned, it can only happen within a very short window of opportunity: a 'moment of opportunity', as President Bush referred to his speech on June 20, 2006 at the N.A.A.C.P annual convention. If Representative Jeff Flake's comment of October 11, 2007, that there is something 'coming': "'It will probably take another indictment or two' to force change, Flake said in a Wednesday interview. 'I think those [indictments] are coming,' is for real, it had better arrive before that window closes. When is the window? Between now and the start of the Democrat Convention. It cannot be an 'October Surprise', or even an early November one, or after Barack Obama is crowned king of his sheep. If it is, it will backfire and this country cannot withstand that reaction.

Have I stretched the issue beyond reality? Not anymore than our liberal friends and their GOP Coup d'etat. Does John McCain know of a Coup d'etat, as liberals are accusing him of?

Does he?

...before an election: that's apparently when the undecideds who are going to vote finally decide. Although I'd personally use 3 days, to be on the safe side.

Johnny Mac knows how to play this game.
He's been counted out before and risen to bite the unsuspecting. My guess is he thinks it will happen again.
In the meantime, I love that the liberals are all hot and bothered by this. Keeps 'em busy for a few days.
And remember, John Kerry was ahead until the votes were actually counted. And then he wasn't. Pity.

My wife and I were just outside, conversing, discussing your style, when I told her about your educated response, she asked, if I expected to hear from Curly Street and Larry Road as well.

I'm sorry. I lost it.

Cheers.

What happens is that the networks, having tried to drive public opinion with weighted polls, realize that they need to retain their credibility and so they actually release their best data on what they think WILL happen instead of what they want to people to think will happen about 48-72 hrs out.

Solidify re Moe means that they stop lying.

Reminds me of '93 NJ Gov by Uma Richie

Voters were angry about incumbent Jim Florio's tax increases and wanted to vote AGAINST him, but challenger Christine Whitman couldn't give them any good reasons to vote FOR her. She managed a few good ads during the final weekend before Election Day and pulled it off.

In the same way, the swing voters aren't too keen on Obama for his negatives, but McCain hasn't inspired them yet and may not be able to until the very end.

I'll go with able by Uma Richie

He may be outspent and of course Obama has the media's backing. I have no idea what kind of negatives they have planned for McCain.

McCain doesn't have control of all the variables in order to time his peak, especially the type that appears after one candidate's image (more likely Obama's) falls apart during a debate. I would hope that McCain plans to seize the momentum if that happens..

They are
1) McSame, 3rd Bush Term et. al.
2) 100 Year War
3) He's so old he doesn't even know how to use a computer (or for some reason is incompetent because of his age.
4) He's a racist who is unfairly victimizing Obama by virtue of being his opposition.
5) And you can't forget that quote McCain has about not knowing the economy or whatever it is.

This is really me blowing of steam from the last 15+ debates I've had on the election. A college campus isn't the best place to argue politics :(

McBush or the Socialist by Rod Patrick

I'd rather vote for McBush, both true Americans, rather than your stealth Socialist Obama, which has been proven to be true by a researcher in Chicago.

Enjoy your CODEPINK girl while you are salivating for your Obama. Freak!

Easy there, Rod! by blooch

He's one of ours, and he's obviuosly fighting in the trenches at Ground Zero of the Obamic Bomb. *I* certainly wouldn't want to debate with those campus clowns. Reread his comment.

Now there's a title that needs to have a post written around it. :)

I'll leave it to the pros here who can string sentences together in paragraphs.

a certain stadium in the Denver area!

at one time or another, and look who the nominee is!

I am taking increasing comfort in an old saying- age and treachery will win over youth and enthusiasm every time. Of course, Johnny Mac might need a little push from us from time to time in the treachery department. :>)
