Black this, black that, black everything -- today is Black Day

By E Pluribus Unum Posted in Comments (90) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »

THERE IS MUCH MORE BLACKNESS TO AMERICAN CULTURE THAN ONE MIGHT THINK - SO I SAY CELEBRATE IT!

I declare today, July 10, 2008, at least for myself, Black Day. I was inspired to do so by a couple of upstanding Black Americans in my area - Dallas City Council members John Wiley Price and Thomas Jones. The Dallas Morning News throws down the tale of this Monday afternoon caper:

Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield, who is white, said it seemed that central collections "has become a black hole" because paperwork reportedly has become lost in the office.

Commissioner John Wiley Price, who is black, interrupted him with a loud "Excuse me!" He then corrected his colleague, saying the office has become a "white hole."

That prompted Judge Thomas Jones, who is black, to demand an apology from Mayfield for his racially insensitive analogy.

Mayfield shot back that it was a figure of speech and a science term.

It seems to me that some people have an obsessive attachment to the word "black", and would prefer it if only *they* were allowed to use it. Well, tough noogies, Commissioners Price and Brown. I like that word, and I think I'll celebrate it all day today. And good on Mayfield for not kowtowing to those sorry race pimps.

**************************************************

So I have some ideas on how to make this an overall Black Day for myself. I shall listen to, watch, read, drive, or otherwise celebrate any and all of the following:

--Blackwater by the Doobies.
--the Black Album by Metallica.
--Black Rain with Michael Douglas.
--Black Entertainment Television.
--point my telescope to coordinates 17h45m40.0s -29d00m28s because that is the location of - you guessed it - the black hole called Sagittarius A.
--The Black Hole of Calcutta -- well, I'll think about India.
--1993 Black Honda Prelude.
--Black Stallion by Walter Farley. LOVED those books as a youngster.
--Black Beauty
[the following update, courtesy of phred]
--do my best today to help my employer operate financially in the black.

*********************************************

Well, that's all I can think of, but that should make it a thoroughly Black Day. Can you think of other celebratory Black Day items?

[note - perhaps next week, I may pick a Green Day]. I bet the tree-hugging eco-terrorists would love us for it.

I like it by bs

I think we should all change our names like we did on "Talk Like a Pirate Day". I'm BlackBS today...

Guess I'll have to swap my silver Macbook Pro for my old Thinkpad today...since it's black.

Some idle fool in Atlanta Government tried to ban the use of the term "black ice" to describe hidden patches of ice on the road. He was roundly ridiculed, but most local news stations have since self-censored.

It was a class on charting decision making and I referred to the "black box" as where all the data inputs go in and the decision comes out, but the actual analysis is unseen.

The look from the black female in the room was akin to Michele Obama's general expression -- somewhere between indignation and constipation.

We should not be so niggardly with our sympathies to the plights of those who suffer from political incorrectness. This just puts a black stain on our site as a whole.

Actually, we should all just let out a little snigger at people like this, and go on living a life of gaiety. Personally, I think black day is a cracker-jack of an idea.

Dressing up has always been my greatest joy
But when it's time to be discreet
There's one thing you just can't beat
And that's a strapless backless classical little black dress

Well first you go rip rip rip
Then you go snip snip snip
Then you whip in a zip zip zip
And split it up to the hip hip hip
And as you strip strip strip
You shiver, and quiver, for that soft caress
As you slip slip slip
Into that little black dress

I'm mortified, EPU by TheSophist

at this blatant whitewashing of the incident. It should be clear even to albinos with poor eyesight that Commissioner Mayfield didn't even offer up a pale excuse for an apology.

The civilized mind blanches at the sight of such insensitivity that offends the sentiment as pure as the driven snow. Hoary maxims to the contrary, we ought not to bleach the import from this incident. Indeed, we should acknowledge that the milk of human kindness, when it flows pearly and spotless from the heart, is superior to the ashen countenance of icy hatred.

If only we might overcome the chalky residue of the past and come together in candescent unity towards friendship, we may yet find that the grey and wrinkled elephant that is our nation might still produce valuable ivory.

When playing Lehman's "The Love of God" for church, I slow it down some from what the congregation is used to, and we still make it through all 3 verses in about 3:30. But Sister Mahalia stretched it out to where you have time to meditate on the glorious implications and inter-relations of every single syllable and space and punctuation mark, and even with the recording being cut after the 1st 2 verses, she kept pounding it out for over 9 minutes!.

You know she knew what she was singing about. Grab that one recording on your way to a desert island. You'll need it.
