Lincoln Chafee just called me.

I just got a recorded phone call from former Senator and former Republican Lincoln Chafee here in Oregon which asked me to switch party registration to Democrat so I could vote for Barack Obama in the upcoming Oregon Primary (we have until next Tuesday to do so before the May 20th primary).

Linc the Stink™ endorsed Obama back in February and stabbed McCain in the back after McCain had helped Linc raise money for his failed bid for reelection.

First, I don't know how Linc the Stink™ got my phone number, unless he stole the RNC phone list from 2006 when I donated to other senate races. Obama had better lose it though. I'm surprised that it wasn't a blocked # that called me, it was the Obama campaign number - 866-675-2008.

Second, I'm not switching my registration. The Democrats made their primary mess, they can deal with it (if I did switch to vote, I'd be part of Operation Chaos). I'm going to proudly cast my primary vote for Senator McCain.

Third, how stupid is Sen Obama? Seriously, Linc the Stink™? Are you kidding me? You really think that Lincoln 'Backstabber' Chafee is the person you want to use to reach Republicans??? This is akin to Al Davis having Javon Walker call me to buy raiders [sic] season tickets (for those that don't know, I bleed Blue and Orange).

While Linc the Stink™ was writing in a vote for George H.W. Bush in 2004, I was proudly casting my vote for the current president to be reelected. I didn't see the need to send Chafee's primary opponent any money in 2006 (I was nowhere near maxing out on giving to other more worthwhile candidates who were actually Republicans), but I understood why people did. I'm glad he's out of the Senate - it probably raised the average IQ of that institution by 15 points. Linc the Stink™ showed no loyalty to the people who had showed loyalty to him. I have a few words for Linc, but none of them would fit within the posting guidelines.

Piss off Linc.

I understand, though, that he was a pretty decent blacksmith in the day.

As the children sing: "Lincoln, Lincoln, I been thinkin'."

That has inspired the Obama campaign to try it.

He's been flooding the TV with his ads recently. I don't think I've seen a Hillary ad, but she's sent Bill Clinton for 5-6 stops around here in the next couple of days.

Send a note to the Obama campaign saying you're following their advice to you to switch party registration, but you're going to vote for Clinton the Lesser. Don't forget to thank them for the idea, saying you wouldn't have thought of it except for the call from Chafee.

which is why I would be part of Operation Chaos if I did switch and vote for Clinton. Eh, I don't care enough about the Democrats to switch.

Yahh...good luck with that Linc.

If he had switched when he was in the Senate and in the majority, he might have had SOME credibility with people. At that point, he'd at least make it clear that he had principles, however distasteful we may find them, and was willing to take a hit for them. Now, he's just shown himself to be...even more self serving then Obama!

Of course, I doubt it'll do him a lot of good. The British didn't have much use for Benedict Arnold after the war.

I know people who think he had a better chance than Laffey to win the SEN seat, but I'm unaware of any "fans"

I don't think that is possible. Isn't it just Chafee out Mavericking the Maverick?

Don't all shoot me but I actually gave money to him, volunteered on his campaign (the first one out of the state after that), and voted for him and yes even in the primary against Steve Laffey. That said I did it only because I am a diehard Republican and want Republicans elected and I am aware of how hard it is to get elected in RI.

I do have to ask why will Oregon voters care about a defeated Rhode Island Senator? Also, Linc is looking out for himself now he wants to run for Mayor of Providence and so he is positioning himself more and more to the left. I like him personally and he has a lovely family but the man who admitted he did cocaine has something wrong with his head.

That's reasonable by Darin H

There was quite a divide around here in 2006 over Chafee. I could see both sides of it. I was for people not giving money to Laffey until they had maxed out giving to other candidates (Steele, Kennedy in MN, etc). I wish the NRSC had stayed out of the primary though.

Maybe Linc will have a positive effect on Oregon Republican voters for Obama, I'm not a typical one having grown up in a more libertarian Colorado and lived quite a while in the South. I still think Obama will win Oregon comfortably, Eugene and Corvallis (my home) are both lefty college towns and Portland should be favorable to him. That's the bulk of the state. Clinton will do well in the more traditional Republican areas - Salem, Albany and Southern Oregon - but I don't think they have enough voters to tilt the primary to her. There are a few talk shows that have been working on Operation Chaos, however, I don't think that it's going to be enough to tilt the scales to Clinton.

I too am from RI by daithi

I too am from RI and I voted based on principle, knowing that Steve Laffey would have a hard time getting elected in RI (although he was handily elected in Cranston and turned around a city on the brink of bankruptcy).

The fact that Republicans in this state decided to support Chafee instead just soured me on the Republicans in this state. There are very few Democrats that are as liberal as Linc Chafee. I have little doubt that RI Republicans would vote for Hillary Clinton over Ronald Reagan if she called herself a Republican because she would have broader appeal than the conservative Reagan. I wonder about national Republicans as well.

I too received a call from Linc the Stink (love the name!). It about made me sick. It's inspired me to participate in Operation Chaos here in Oregon. Although I don't think it will do much good with respect to the presidential contest, since Portland Democrats represent the very epitome of latte liberals, and Obama is sure to win. More importantly IMO is the Senate race here, where I plan on voting for the biggest Dem loser in the primary that I can find.
