As I’m sure everyone in the blogosphere knows, Left and Right, we are in the middle of an increasingly fierce partisan battle over the socialization of the healthcare system pushed forth by Obama and San Fran Nan. What some Republicans and Democrats have done, aided by the Council of Catholic Bishops is craft provisions within this bill that essentially add the Hyde Amendment to this bill, further ensuring that no federal dollars will be used in this bill to fund abortion. Many Democrats are willing to concede the point of abortion for the purpose of getting this bill through. However, there are enough Democrats that are wedded to the abortion lobby that they are willing to kill the entire healthcare bill in order to ensure that abortion on demand is covered in the socialization of the healthcare bill. The Church of course, stands against any bill that provides abortion, and is willing to deny Catholic politicians Communion, the holiest of rites for spouting their pro-choice viewpoints in the face of Catholic teaching.
This point about abortion is a non-negotiable point for Catholics who wish to remain in good standing with the Church; the sanctity of life is not for convenience, or something that is optional. Therefore, how can Notre Dame, the nation’s largest and most visible Catholic University, consider hiring pro-choice candidate Brian Kelly. Is Coach Kelly an excellent football coach? His record certainly points to it, but his positions are unacceptable for Notre Dame. If abortion is such an important issue that the Vatican would see fit to intervene (rightly so, I would add, especially considering that this is an overhaul that will affect the next generation for life), than how can the coach of the largest Catholic University be a pro-choice “Catholic”? I bring up this point about the Church because the Church, like political parties, recognizes that there are significant hills to die on, and one of those hills is in the fight for the lives of the unborn. We so often speak about the idea of a big tent within the GOP, but as we know, if you expand a tent too wide, all of the poles will eventually fall.
Like the Church, it is necessary to call out the RINOs, and the fake conservative Ds, who pretend to be one thing but do another. Christ tell us “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” It is not enough for us to give lip service to abortion, and talk about it in blogs and in our friends, but we must hold the politicians responsible who insist on grotesquely distorting the value of human life, wherever we see it, whether it is in the football field of Notre Dame, or in the hallowed halls of the Capitol. It is not enough to celebrate passing an overhaul of the healthcare system or winning a college football championship if you have sacrificed your principles to get there. Indeed what do you benefit to gain the whole world and lose your soul? Some say not to turn this into a battle over abortion and then state that their is nothing that social conservatives can do in terms of legislative policy. We can stand athwart history yelling stop, as Buckley advised us to so many years ago. Many Catholics would rather see Notre Dame lose 100000 games in a row than to lose its Catholic identity, the same way that many conservatives would rather see nothing at all pass than any healthcare reform that aids and abets killing the unborn. Our time to fight is now on all fronts, and like Dylan Thomas advised us, we will not go gentle into this good night. Let us rage, rage against the dying of the Light!

Waiting for Bishop Rhoades
KathW (Diary) Wednesday, December 9th at 8:39AM EST (link)Father Jenkins of Notre Dame has been unwilling so far to take gentle guidance from his diocesan bishop. However, Bishop D’Arcy recently retired and Bishop Rhoades has been named to replace him. Not even sure if he’s installed yet. I know the Pope spoke strongly during his visit here about the character of Catholic universities, and I know that Archbishop Burke, who is part of the committee to appoint bishops, is adamant about Catholic identity. I have high hopes that the magisterium has placed a forceful bishop into Fort Wayne/South Bend, and that once he’s settled in we may see changes at Notre Dame.
I hope he doesn't disappoint.
Uma Richie (Diary) Wednesday, December 9th at 8:52AM EST (link)Bishop Rhoades will be installed in January. I am in his current diocese, and am heartbroken to see him go. He is young, energetic, unabashedly Catholic (you would think that would go without saying), and, based on his performance at Mount St. Mary’s, is qualified to shepherd a college-aged flock. Based on Bishop Rhoades’ letter of protest about last year’s commencement, I believe that Pope Benedict is sending Fr. Jenkins a pretty strong message with this appointment. Bishop Rhoades will be in my prayers.
Very promising
KathW (Diary) Wednesday, December 9th at 3:32PM EST (link)Hearing your reiteration of Bishop Rhoades is wonderful. He is in my prayers as well.
Blackcon, this is a hill for the bishops to not only take a stand on,
penguin2 (Diary) Wednesday, December 9th at 9:28AM EST (link)but to start taking back ceded ground. I had not realized until last spring, with Obama as speaker at Notre Dame’s commencement, how secular almost all of the Catholic universities and colleges had become. I think there are many other Christian founded schools that are centuries old, which have experienced the same thing.
“Winning” a game, only to lose one’s soul, renders that win meaningless in the long run.

BlackConservative (Diary) Wednesday, December 9th at 9:35AM EST (link)And to me its about the fact that while some private former Christian schools have chosen to operate as secular schools, Notre Dame continues to hold itself up as a model of Catholic education. Based on that image, that cannot make a man the face of their school who refuses to accept Catholic teaching, as a cafeteria Catholic.

We need a modern day St. Ambrose
H (Diary) Wednesday, December 9th at 10:58AM EST (link)Aside from being the bishop who converted Augustine to Christianity, St. Ambrose, bishop of Milan, most courageously excommunicated the powerful Catholic Emperor Theodosius I for a massacre of innocent civilians in Thessalonica. He literally stood at the doors of the cathedral and blocked the emperor’s entrance. Theodosius responded – to everyone’s surprise – not by prosecuting and executing Ambrose for treason, but by repenting and doing some serious acts of penance before returning to the sacraments.
A word of warning to any non-Catholics who may be considering the writings of the first and second century “Early Church Fathers” like Clement of Rome, Mathetes, Polycarp, Ignatius, Barnabas, Papias, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, or Ambrose… to become familiar with these writings is to become Catholic.
It is a tough battle.
proudmarinemom (Diary) Wednesday, December 9th at 5:40PM EST (link)I wrote to Fr. Jenkins and signed the petition to withdraw Obama’s invitation to speak at ND, to no avail. I also wrote to my parish priest and expressed my frustrations with the Church and the failure to stop this charade. I got a “you should lighten up” response.
Eight of my nieces and nephews attend the Catholic school in a D.C. suburb which I and my many siblings attended in the 60s and 70s. It was a middle-class neighborhood back then but is a very affluent, upscale area now. Lots of late-model SUVs and BMWs in the parking lot now (my mom’s dented Pontiac station wagon would never blend.) Recently the principal there sent a broadcast cell phone message to school families explaining how important it was to tune in to “President Obama’s Inspiring Speech on Education.” She continues to remind the children to honor Dear Leader Obama on a regular basis. The pastor says nothing.

Hermes (Diary) Thursday, December 10th at 11:55AM EST (link)I agree wholeheartedly with you.
The problem lies in two specific documents, however, that have directly cast the American Catholic education system into direct conflict with Rome.
The first is the Land O’Lakes statement of 1967 in which the heads of Catholic universities (in the so-called “Spirit of Vatican II and academic freedom”) essentially committed to the position that any Catholic school head can and should be able to tell his/her local bishop to get stuffed. In clear violation of canon law (teaching authority of the bishops and the Magisterium), these administrators destroyed the authentic Catholic identity of American Catholic Universities (including Notre Dame).
Pope John Paul II responded to this during his papacy in Ex Corde Ecclesiae (1990). Ex Corde says, in effect, that Land O’Lakes has no basis in Catholic tradition, doctrine, or canon law. In theory any Catholic administrator pulling this kind of garbage should be removed by his local bishop, but the bishops have been very, very gun-shy about invoking this given that it would result in a massive legal battle.
The best hope for Catholic parents is to check out some of the college guides published by the Cardinal Newman Society or EWTN or another reputable Catholic source. A very few Catholic universities are still authentically Catholic; you owe it to your kids to check them out. Here’s a freebie: University of Dallas.
