Conservatives fight like the brave 300, now where is our Leonidas?

As promised, your favorite Black Conservative returns with a vengeance to the blogging world, like Sarah Palin, EPU, David Hinz, janis, bsimpson, Gamecock, AceInTx, and all of my blogging friends proud to be conservative and not Republican. I took a non voluntary break due to my inability to prevent ordering gaps in my internet service, only to find that the political world is turning upside down, and the Party still does not get it, begging the question, will they ever get it? All over the country, from California to New York, we have the chance to change the makeup of the Republican Party from a party that appeases the Left to one that actively opposes the liberal agenda. Not only can we change the party, but polls show across the board that the term conservative is up even as Republican remains down in the age of Obama. And what does the Party have to say about this-Shut up, and get in line.

The latest example? NY23, where Doug Hoffman, a credible and conservative challenger running under the banner of the Conservative Party being endorsed by Sarah Palin, former VP of what used to be the opposition party to the Left’s agenda. NY23 being a solid R district, it is certainly one of the districts where we should be pushing the most conservative candidate, rather than the squishiest moderate who will maverick as soon as the New York Times comes calling. 2009 and 2010 seem to be banner years for conservatives, who have a chance to repeat 1994 if we could muster up the chance to fight. In a year of irony, Newt Gingrich plays Efialtis, the traitor who shows the Persians the path to victory by standing with the moderates, and kneeling to the party establishment, which wants us, the common people to kneel to it as a false god.

As I said, this is happening all over the country, with the party establishment countrywide working for the moderates and against conservatives who have an equal chance to win. We see it with Mr. Hoffman in New York, we see it happening with Marco Rubio in Florida, and we see it happening with Chuck Devore in California. Here in Michigan, we have a fighting chance of getting a true conservative as governor with Mike Cox, the attorney general proving that Michigan will elect conservatives if given the chance. However more often than not, the Republican Party has presented itself as Xerses, the Persian God, planning to take over and step over those who are unwilling to knee, as most of us are. We are the men who have carried the party on our back, blogging, fighting, joining committees and working as precinct captains for the Republican Party. And what is our thanks? They spit in our faces and work to remake the party to look like John McCain(McCain Party). However, it is not as though this should be surprising given McCain’s recent pledge to help Kirk in Illinois, Crist in Florida, and a host of other candidates around the country hijack our party and swing it to the Left and become liberals while the Democrats march towards socialism.

It is time for conservatives to stand and fight for what we believe in, against the Left of both parties. This is not a time for us to appease our enemies, as Obama and McCain continue the march towards Gomorrah. This is a time for the brave 300 to rise up and fight against the tyranny for liberty. This is about more than just an election, this is about the future of our nation. We have seen that simply having an R after your name is not enough. Giving the country to the McCainiacs would be almost as bad as giving it to the Obamas. Liberalism in the name of maverickism or socialism hardly sounds like a choice. Out of control spending with nods towards earmarks (which really isnt much when you look at the whole of our budget), abortion on demand, the eradication of the family and the church as the building block of society, and the breaking of America as a superpower and the end of American exceptionalism. The liberals and socialists want to break America and rob it of greatness to appease our enemies and the countries they want as our friends. They believe that if only we gave away our healthcare and taxed our rich and our businesses to another country, and eliminated God and guns folks would like us more.

Every great army has had a great leader, be it a great general (Patreaus will never betray us, hoo-ra) or a great commander in chief (George W. Bush, you had your problems, but security of America was never one of them). Where is our leader who will fight for our values? That leader is inside of all of us, the Tea Party goers, the town hall protesters, the 9/12 marchers. Obama says that we get in line and do what we are told, and Gingrich who is unable to lift his spear and fight with us tells us to get in line for the Republican Party. If we lose, we lose with glory, we lose with principle, we lose with honor. But by God, we must fight. We must fight so we can hold our heads high and tell our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren that there is an America that we believe in, an America that believes in liberty, freedom, and justice. Conservatives cannot stand and wait for a Leonidas to lead us, because right now we have none but ourselves. Pawlenty is an establishment fraud and a coward, Fred gets bored too easily and Sarah couldn’t even finish being governor. That puts me in the shaky position of looking at Huckabee who has backed conservatives like Rubio, called out the bailouts, and being moving and staying to the Right since 2008. But the real conservative fighter is within all of us, who will not let the Obamas and McCains tell us to kneel. Between Death and Surrender, there is an easy choice. Spartans never retreat, never surrender. America is worth fighting for.

…we need a puppet. Seems to have worked for the Democrats.

By far, Palin is our most magnetic figure

Joe Rivers (Diary) Friday, October 23rd at 5:57PM EST (link)

She fits the puppet role, because IMHO she is most decidedly not the right stuff. Not because she is too polarizing, too easy on the eyes (overrated), too inexperienced (more than Obama, about equal to JFK). But because down where the rubber hits the road, she’s petty and small-time, opportunistic, and conservative when and where it suits her. She’s got positives, but I think her negatives are fatal. She cannot lead a movement.

The right person? I’ve been thinking about that a lot, because like BlackConservative says, most of our front-benchers are not that person.

Dick Cheney.

God, I love that man. I would go to battle for him.

Seriously we may need to draft someone

Erick Brockway (Diary) Friday, October 23rd at 3:53PM EST (link)

…rather than wait for someone to rise to the top.
I’m thinking someone with recent military leadership experience.

Well Erick, let the Petraeus 2012 movement begin :-0) Not that I think he'd take it

BlackConservative (Diary) Friday, October 23rd at 3:56PM EST (link)

Petraeus would probably never do it, but hey if we were gonna draft a true leader, with real military cred, who better than him?

people to work together for a common goal in innovative ways. But we truly need someone well versed in the snake pit that is D.C., otherwise they have no real chance at getting anything done other than getting rolled. See, “Obama, Barrack” or “Carter, Jimmuh”. Which is a really tricky thing, to have enough political experience without being so thoroughly corrupted by it that you have gone native.

Where’s the younger Fred Thompson? And I don’t mean Jeri, his wife. Surely in a country the size of this one, there can’t be just one man, and one man only, with his principles, his wisdom, and his ability to speak the plain truth. (And that probably is true heresy— for FredHeads, there can be only one.)

civil truth (Diary) Friday, October 23rd at 8:42PM EST (link)

Hehas a history of being too slippery and opportunistic, and his oratorical skills I fear are used to manipulate, not inform. I don’t see that feeling of mine going away in three years: I’m from an era when history lasts longer than the newest soundbite.

Surely we can do better than the crew we had to choose from in 2008 – I really hope someone else emerges – because I dont’ want to see the fighting over an unimpressive fields where we argue between “bad” and “a bit worse”.

(That’s not a knock on Fred in terms of his platform – he more or less took himself out of the running, but perhaps going forward – like Sarah – he can rally the forces of conservatism as a mobilizer, not a candidate.

I think we do have new faces possibilities for 2012 (at least I hope so – I don’t want to see a rerun of the 2008 primary season) that hopefully are not plucked from the vine too early for vintage.

But right now I’m focusing on 2010 and on our nation surviving to get to that point in a recognizable form, much less get to 2012.

My problem with Huck right now

aesthete (Diary) Friday, October 23rd at 8:57PM EST (link)

is that it’s way to easy to support conservatism from behind a microphone or a studio camera: conservatism on camera (or via radio, or on the pages of a book) sells, and Huck is a consummate salesman, and instinctually good at finding a niche, if nothing else. I’ll trust nothing that he says or publishes until he finds himself in a situation where he has something to lose if he supports conservatism, as he would on a daily basis if he were president. Even then, I would have to weigh that against his lackluster record as governor of Arkansas, which was decidedly anti-conservative and anti-Republican.

The act of defending any of the cardinal virtues has today all the exhilaration of a vice – G.K. Chesterton

With you aesthete and civil-which is why I said shaky position

BlackConservative (Diary) Friday, October 23rd at 9:08PM EST (link)

Huckabee has made as I said a decided and calculated shift to the Right, but it is at least the Right shift. He is not Sean Hannity, being an apologist for GOP mainstream ways. I hope that we are not recycling 2008 (Palin included), but right now I don’t see a fresh face I can get excited about. I’m giving Huck the same pass I gave Mitt-that he’s seen the light and burying his lot with the people. We’ll see come 2011 what lies beneath the surface.

While Huck has come out pretty conservative on his show most of the time there’s still that “what lies beneath” quality to him that I just cannot get past. I don’t know all that much about his governorship of AR beyond what I’ve read here, I supported Thompson during the primary, then, reluctantly, supported McCain when he became the nominee. There is Huck’s history on taxes, of course to be concerned about.

Actually to a number of you upthread. Early in the primary, Thompson was my guy and then Guiliani. But I paid attention to Huckabee, because I was surprised to hear a politician speak the conservative language. I liked him for some time, right until he refused to get out of the race when it became clear that John McCain was going to be our candidate. Something seemed off about that. At this point, I saw him as just another politician. Extra monies were spent that could have been used elsewhere. The more I have learned about his time as Governor, the less I see him as the real deal. He seems too ready to go whichever way the wind blows.

I watched his TV show several times, and then got tired of it. I did not like him pandering to the other side. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but he seems too smooth tongued and opportunistic.

It seem obvious that none of the last group are going to help any more than Palin will be able to help: in the fundraising department. They’re “damaged” goods, now, kind of like Edwards running for presidency after a failed run in the VP slot.

However, there is a sea change happening in the country when a Palin endorsement brings in huge funds to a candidate just because she endorsed him over the Republican candidate. I don’t think she’s viable for 2012 but perhaps in the future she will be. I have a feeling that whoever she endorses is going to give any opposition a run for their money.

I think we have faces for 2012, too. We just can’t see them, yet, for all the camera hogs.

said, no R was going to win last year. Just as well that we ran McCain and made him into double-damaged goods, whether he acknowledges that or not. (If he tries to run again in 2012, someone needs to wheel him off to the Home and feed him some pudding.)

It would be over the top wonderful if Fred! did come back in 2012 with the message that this country needs and the enthusiasm for selling it. Who knows? And, finally, we would truly have a First Lady that IS beautiful, inside and out both. (Not knocking Laura Bush, because you’d have to go a very long way to find a more gracious, classy lady. I’m thinking instead of Obama holding Michelle out at toned-arm’s length and saying, “Look at her, isn’t she beautiful?” And the answer is,”No. We know who she is and what she thinks of us and our country.”)

BlackConservative and Janis- I literally mourned for days when Fred dropped out

as though a beloved member of my family had died. I know of alot of people that got savagely angry with him for that, and actually wanted their campaign donations back. As Janis has said, the political winds were blowing in the direction of Obama, and away from anything anywhere near to Bush. Fred took along time to announce, and that hurt him badly. Many didn’t think he would actually get in, and went to backing someone else. I think that the enormous amount of drafting that was being done, as well as the level he was claiming in the polls, probably obligated him to run. I agree most likely against his wishes. He knew he and any other R didn’t have much of a chance, why should he have killed himself campaigning. I seriously doubt that he would run again in 2012, but, the political climate will be far different then than it was in 2008. 60% of the people are screaming for conservatism and a real conservative to vote for. Who knows.

This search for a "leader" to rescue conservatism is a blind alley, I think

civil truth (Diary) Friday, October 23rd at 4:30PM EST (link)

It sounds too much like the I Samuel desire of Israel for a king “who will lead us and fight our battles for us”. This mentality too prevalent got us in this mess with Obama – and fighting fire with fire will only burn down the house around us all.

I think ColdWarrior and others have the basic strategy right – capture the party at the ground level and move up the power line – and that means that thousands of people are going to have to do the dirty work; no knight in shiny armor is going to deliver us from socialist Danes and their hired mercenaries – we’ve got to stand up on our own, many of us hand-in-hand.

If we build an army and develop loyal officers, the leader will be be found and arise in the Lord’s timing. With the infrastructure, any leaders will disappoint (or be betrayed or seduced despite good intentions).

I , like so many others, are looking at 2012 as a make or break election. After 10 months, we see the damage that’s already done, and the notion of not just three more years, but 7 more years is almost too much to contemplate. To do the hand to hand combat that we will have to for the next 38 months is one thing, because there might be a goal reached and a little bit of surcease there as well.

To do that kind of fighting, not just with the left, but also within our own ranks for another 84 months? By that time, even if we win, what will be left?
