Obama Uses His Daddy Voice On Wall Street

Remember when Nancy Pelosi became Speaker of the House? One of her first remarks was that she intended to trot up to the White House, and use her mommy voice on the President of the United States.

Democrats do have a way of thinking they have parental responsibility for the rest of us. Yesterday, Obama got himself quoted in all the news outlets to the effect that he was outraged over a report from the New York State Comptroller’s office.

That report has it that “Wall Street” (I don’t know exactly which companies that means in this case, because I haven’t read the Comptroller’s report) paid out about $18 billion in bonuses at the end of 2008. Bonuses are usually determined in early to mid November, and hit their recipients’ bank accounts in January. So we’re talking about the incentive compensation that bankers and finance professionals received for their performance in 2008.

Except, as Obama rightly points out, 2008 was the worst year in the industry’s history. By rights, very few finance professionals and managers should be getting bonuses for last year. And Obama is on to something very important, which is that the optics of this situation play out in a very evil way to Americans at large, many of whom are concerned about keeping their jobs, much less getting bonused.

What makes it explosive, of course, is that in many cases, the money for the huge bonuses (which can average $600,000 per employee or more at top firms) is coming out of stabilization funds provided by the taxpayers to banks and Wall St. firms.

Now having said all that, let me say this, and this I know: Wall St. will not tolerate rescissions or clawbacks of their bonuses. That’s just not how the financial industry works. Let’s have a debate about whether this should be changed legislatively, but you’re not going to see any of this change retroactively.

Now one assumes that Obama, who is among the Smartest People In America™, fully understands this, and is simply playing to the cameras.

On the other hand, his experience is as a community organizer, university professor and a state legislator, worlds in which observable reality doesn’t matter all that much. The man may honestly believe he’s Elliott Ness, with a mandate to clean up the cesspool of Wall Street.

If he does believe this, then Wall Street will eat him for lunch.

Obama is still stoking the proletariat anger. Next; pitchforks and torches

Marcus_Traianus (Diary) Friday, January 30th at 10:40AM EST (link)

Obama must have missed what even the WSJ did not; that many institutions are using “clawbacks” for the first time to withhold bonuses. He also missed that in other cases the bonuses are contractually tied to individual performance; meaning, if your business objectives were met (even though other sectors pulled down overall performance) they owe you.

So now we have moved closer to the Obama collectivist world view where if one suffers, we all suffer. We get to pay for other people’s mistakes despite our success and their stupid failures.

Hard to believe, I know, there are thousands on Wall Street with good business sense and integrity. It makes me want to go to the corner of Wall and Broad, hop up on the steps of Federal Hall with some collegeaues and sing “We are the World”.

“Both of our political parties, at least the honest portion of them, agree conscientiously in the same object—the public good; but they differ essentially in what they deem the means of promoting that good. One side believes it best done by one composition of the governing powers; the other, by a different one. One fears most the ignorance of the people; the other, the selfishness of rulers independent of them. Which is right, time and experience will prove.”.Thomas Jefferson

I have wondered how Wall Street might push back with the latest drama unfolding. My other major concern is if Pres. Obama actually thinks he is above it all, and his public comments are meant to help the situation, provide further heartburn, or just intended to stir things up for a diversion.

Four more years will be an eternity…

The last statement is a joke.

There have been volumes of material here on RedState showing the complicity of Dodd and Franks and many others in the Housing collapse, which brought us the Wall St. collapse.

You are completely off the rails here and instead of just reeling back a bit of the emotion you are feeling, you have decided to stand in your “moral superiority”, regardless of facts, and attempt to incite anger against “Wall St.” just like the nazi’s did with the Jewish bankers in Germany….get a grip.

Guilty as charges.

My mistake.

I’m angry about this. I was disgusted by the original bailout because it goes against what made this country great and because I knew the government couldn’t spend that kind of money without feeling empowered to enact more regulation.

Now they thumb their noses at the new President?

Seriously, can you think of ANYTHING that will bring more regulation, faster than this?

It is just begging Washington to enact bonus regulation.

Which sucks for all of us.

Bonuses on Wall Street are the primary method of compensating employees. They are more like sales commissions than anything else and are often part of a specific performance contract. IE: The employee’s contract states that is he meets $X in sales, he receives $Y in bonus.

You can argue about the wisdom of a specific contract, but once the contract is made, if the employee meets his performance obligations, the company is obligated to pay the bonus.

To threaten people with prison for meeting their contractual obligations shows a profound lack of understanding of the laws of our land and the moral and legal obligation of people to follow through with contracts.

but if these were discretionary bonuses, then it’s just wrong, and the existing laws should be utilized where fiduciary responsibilities have been shirked.

Basic accounting. Assets = Liabilities + Equity. The change in Equity for any time period = income = revenues – costs. And when push comes to shove, the (very ungranular) order of claims on the assets are

1.) Creditors
2) Preferred Stockholders
3) Common Stockholders (the entire residual)

As long as discretionary costs only impact the residual (common equity), then any disputes as to the legality of bonuses are between the shareholders (as extremely weakly “represented” by board of directors) and management (the hired help).

Once discretionary bonuses start dipping into claims of other parties (i.e. ME),
I have every right to howl about the fiduciary behavior of management. And where that’s been legally breached, the I say sick the dogs on them.

It’s right morally to demand accountability of “Wall Street” management, and arguing against it is a SURE LOSING political strategy. Game over.

The first half of the bailout money has supposedly been spent, and, no one knows where it went. I am sure Geithner does, as he was in the thick of it as it was being dolled out. They were given a blank check with no oversight or accountability.

For Obama to sit next to Geithner, and claim outrage at the large bonuses paid to Wall Street people is nothing more than a false proclimation to give the appearance of “responsibility” at a time when he is determined to get his “stimulus” plan passed, which stimulates nothing.

What were the names of those Republicans that supported Geithner as the new Chief Liar and Deceiver of the Federal Reserve? and who want the new president to succeed. He hasn’t even had hardly a ripple in his march to Socialism and worse.

And not a single person has found and mentioned the truly important part of all of this:

Obama is complaining about $18 billion in bonuses, but that number is DOWN from $33 billion last year. That’s DOWN 44%.

As the New York Post reports, the Comptroller of New York was COMPLAINING about the loss of revenue to New York City and New York State, which earn 12% and 20% of their tax revenues from these bonuses, respectively.

Further, as one person mentioned, NO MENTION is made of WHICH FIRMS GAVE BONUSES and whether those bonuses were PART OF PRE-EXISTING CONTRACTS.

We have no idea when these contracts were paid. As mentioned, many are determined in November and paid in January, but many are also paid earlier in the year. Much of this $18 billion could have been paid well before the bailout.

So we don’t even know how much of this $18 billion figure was given by firms that received a bailout nor how much of that would have been spent, bailout or no.

Obama seems to be so masterful at misdirection that everyone is paying attention to the demonization of corporate bonuses, and not whether his statement is even valid on its face. He demagogues the $18 billion figure and obfuscates the fact that it represents a 44% drop! And we the conservatives and libertarians in the Republican Party have taken the bait hook, line and sinker!
