Never make a joke that undermines the premises of what you’re trying to sell. That one’s not actually in the rule book (at least I’ve never seen it there), but you know it’s true if you’ve ever had to kick a cocky young sales guy under the table.
Knowing where one stands on challenging, controversial questions is above Obama’s pay grade. We know this because he told us so. Exactly what pay grade is higher than the one he wants us to hire him into?
The President makes $400,000/year, plus all the board memberships, book deals, speaking engagements and other easy money he can eat after he leaves the office. Who makes more money than that?
Not the Fed Chairman, who is the most powerful man in the global economy. He only makes about $180K. Higher salaries than the President’s go to a few thousand CEOs; a few hundred hedge-fund operators and bond traders; and a few dozen athletes, entertainers and movie actors. But those people don’t have a pay-grade. Their pay is strictly meritocratic.
So what Obama ended up inadvertently telling us, is that he thinks it’s not the President’s job to make the tough decisions. That’s a little too convenient for a guy with a long history of avoiding tough decisions.

Personally, I found the statement patronizing, considering the setting. The Senator appears to have no trouble deciding when life should end – at least for infants and about to be born babies.
Then, again, hypocrisy and condescension have long been his strong suits.

29Victor (Diary) Thursday, August 21st at 10:47AM EST (link)But that was just a dodge.
Obama was taking a pro-choice stance and attempting to word it in such a way that it made him look his motivation for taking that stance was his sincere, humble Christian faith. He was also implying that pro-lifers are being arrogant and presumptious when they clearly state when life begins.
But if he really is in doubt about when babies should get human rights, wouldn’t it be best to err on the side of caution and recognize those rights at the earliest time in their development?
Also, the President is responsible for making all sorts of “God-like” decisions: Who to feed in the country/world, who not to feed. How and when to netogiate and how and when to send troops. Whether stem cell research should be government funded or not.
As the leader of the most powerful country in the history of the world, making these kinds of decisions is almost his job description. He’s the guy who authorizes launching nuclear weapons that could wipe out entire contries for goodness sakes. Tell me that’s not a “God-like” decision. If Obama is elected with he abdicate this authority too?

Kindergarten Pay Grade
Matthew Morris (Diary) Thursday, August 21st at 10:54AM EST (link)The thing here is, this is not above Obama’s pay grade, nor that of anyone else. This is a decision in fact everyone ought to make. It’s not rocket science. It’s not even science. It’s philosophy. As many or dare I say most of a president’s decisions are rooted in. Questions of values, priorities, and purposes.
A more pointed question would have been, “At what point Senator Obama do you begin to value a human life?”
“I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

Different questions
Menlo (Diary) Thursday, August 21st at 11:15AM EST (link)The question was not when life begins. Biology has clearly defined that for two centuries. Anyone who doesn’t know that should not graduate high school. The question was when human life should have rights. They are two TOTALLY different questions.

Is There Anyone Other Than God Above Presidential Pay Grade?
redsoilman Thursday, August 21st at 12:49PM EST (link)With this little “above my pay-grade” line, Barry announced that he defers to God on this one, and on pretty much every challenging, controversial question. I have one major problem with that approach. God is not available to serve as President of the United States.
It is curious that a leftist is allowed to avoid answering all tough questions by essentially saying that God is the one with the answers. Meanwhile, our sitting President of the United States, has the humility to indicate both that he believes God does have answers to some key questions and that, as president it is his duty to try to listen to those answers and put them into practice. Oddly enough, President Bush is excoriated for having the temerity to believe he hears from God. Never mind the fact that he has the humility to admit he makes mistakes and that he does not translate his own search for God’s guidance into a declaration that all that Bush does is God ordained.
Let’s see, in order to maintain his status as Chosen One the Obama cannot afford to say that God speaks to him. After all, we all know that that would show he was dangerously unhinged. So, if Barry says that only God can answer these key questions and he is, as is required by his leftist base, unwilling to listen to God to find out the answers, it seems to me he can offer us no guidance on any important questions. That does not sound like much of a president to me. In fact, it seems that the Chosen One is a far bigger fool and a far more dangerous man to have as POTUS than would be just about any alternative.
Essentially, what he has told us is that whenever America faces a difficult moral quandary he lacks an answer of his own, and he has no way to help us come to an answer together because that great shadowy mystery in the sky that might or might not be the Christian God is the only one who really knows and we all know that only evil right-wing dictators, I mean Republican Presidents, believe they can hear His voice. Hmmm….I am really looking forward to the firm and clear leadership we can expect from The One.
