Pelosi/Stupak deal to be announced this morning?

Jane Hamscher at Firedoglake is reporting that Stupak and Pelosi have a deal for a “tie bar” vote on what is more or less the original Stupak amendment. Stupak is confident enough that he has the votes to pass it (remember that 25% of the Dems voted for his amendment originally) that he’s willing for that vote to take place AFTER the vote on the Senate bill. He has said all along that a “sidecar” approach was acceptable to him.

This obviously means that Pelosi can’t peel off enough of his group to pass the Senate bill, but it has upset various liberals. Diana Degette wants to hold the Stupak vote first, and if it passes she says she and other pro-abortion libs will vote against the Senate bill. And Alan Grayson is mad because he says he has 80 members who want to reinsert a public option, so it’s not fair for Stupak to get better treatment than he gets.

Another FDL poster explains the ins and outs of what this “enrollment corrections” bill would mean. It’s enough to make your head spin, and would seemingly require a lot of cooperation, including from both the pro-abortion Senate Dems AND the Senate GOP to work.

The bottom line is that we’ll get even more shaky machinations than were already planned and Stupak and company will join in the fun. It is guaranteed to be even more of a zoo in the Senate than it would have been anyway.

This will be a great weekend.

Criminal activity in the House and Senate 24/7.

NCAAB countdown to Sweet 16.

I'm thinking it doesn't matter.

Steph C (Diary) Saturday, March 20th at 9:01AM EST (link)

I hate to sound negative and I’m sure not going to stop yelling at Congress, but I went to bed last night thinking about this after I saw Stupak on Greta.

For all the talk about sanctity of life, he doesn’t believe in the sanctity of life. If all that’s barring him from voting for the bill is federal funding of abortion, he doesn’t believe in the sanctity of life but uses it merely as a pretext.

There is nothing in that bill honoring life at any point from conception to death so how can he spout “sanctity of life”? It’s a form of slavery with the amount of control over our everyday lives that the government is seeking to impose. Where is the sanctity of life in that respect?

It’s all a sham. They spout ideals and claim to be unsupportive of this, that, or the other thing right up until the vote is taken. My stupid Congressman did that. He went on record as against the first House bill, yet, when the time came he voted for it.

If you could believe liars, I could be cheered by Mr. Perrin’s and others’ analysis but Democrats lie, cheat, and steal with absolutely no conscience. As it is, I’m rather pessimistic about this not passing.

Does that mean I’m ready to give up the fight? No. I’m looking to what will be the next step after it passes. And…

I hope that 52% that voted for these morons live to regret it as much as the morons will.

Stupak believes in big government health care reform

JSobieski (Diary) Saturday, March 20th at 11:08AM EST (link)

Its not like the text of the bill has the phrase “death panels”. There are quite a few respectable conservative pundits (Krauthammer among them) who think the death panels thing was an unfair characterization.

The point is, we are currently a minority party. We needed someone on the dem side to stick up for something. Stupak is all we’ve got. He has shown integrity on this issue. Better to save your powder for Pelosi, not Stupak.

My rules of the road for primary season.
Rule #1: Vote for YOUR first choice in the primaries
Rule #2: Vote for the R in the general.
Rule #3: Don’t let anyone convince you to violate Rule #1 or Rule #2
Rule #4: When in a center-right argument, reaffirm Rules #1-#3–it will help us all to get along better.
Rule #5: If you are using the language of the left, you probably aren’t furthering conservativism
Rule #6: The priority is issues first, candidates second, and supporters third. Nobody is bigger than the issues. Conversely, if you spend your time focusing on supporters, you are wasting everyone’s time.

STOP THE MADNESS!

A reduction in the rate of spending increases is NOT a cut!
In-state tuition for illegals is NOT amnesty!
Requiring someone to pay their medical bills is NOT an individual mandate!
Reducing tax rates is NOT a tax increase!

Oh, I'm not after Stupak, specifically

Steph C (Diary) Saturday, March 20th at 11:30AM EST (link)

or perhaps I should say directly. I just know how they lie and pretend and I’m done with hoping that, for once in their lives, they’re telling the truth. If he votes no, I’ll thank him, and celebrate with a huge sense of relief but I’m not counting on him doing the right thing.

Getting my hopes up to that level just to have them pounded down with a sledge hammer hasn’t done a whole lot of good for my blood pressure.

Some Congressman on Fox just called the Tea Partiers minorities, like he was being magnanimous saying they should have their say, if not their way. The majority of Americans don’t want this perversion of government, yet, we’re still a minority?

Given how upstream Stupak's struggle has been, he should be specifically affirmed

JSobieski (Diary) Saturday, March 20th at 11:34AM EST (link)

The guy has integrity and guts. He has been very frank about the future of pro-lifers in the democrat party, and he is otherwise a liberal–so he has nowhere to hide.

The MSM reports may be up and down, but you need to look beneath the headlines. I have been consistently upbeat for the past two weeks.

I’ve watched the myth of the Blue Dog dissolve because it never really existed. It’s hard to have faith in something that seems no more solid than smoke.

But, I’ll try.

Stupak isn't a Blue Dog democrat

JSobieski (Diary) Saturday, March 20th at 12:15PM EST (link)

I agree, Blue Dogs (typically characterized as “fiscal conservatives”) are a myth.

Stupak is no Blue Dog, but he is pro-life.

Stupak has destroyed any future he has in the democratic party. Even the unions hate him now, and he pretty much votes their way 100%.

The guy is pro-life, and he has integrity about. If you ever watched MSNBC or visit liberal blogs—THEY ABSOLUTELY HATE HIM even though he agrees with them 90% of the time.

Stupak is truly seeing the dark underbelly of the beast

eburke (Diary) Saturday, March 20th at 12:27PM EST (link)

that has consumed his party. He strikes me as being more of the ‘old-time’ liberal – pro-union, equalling the playing field (i.e. progressive taxes) etc. On the other side of the ideological divide, to be sure, but an honorable man (kinda like Paul Wellstone).

I sense in his body language a sadness and dejection over the just plain nasty radical kooks that have taken over his party. I’ve said it before on here, I think Waxman’s in your face dissing of human life versus money hit Bart like a ton of bricks. It’s one thing to know there are those who believe opposite of you on the abortion issue, but to have someone in such a blatantly crass manner spit on your most cherished beliefs to your face, that’s another thing entirely.

And if anyone could do it, Henry “Nostrils” Waxman is the guy.

For our sake,

Steph C (Diary) Saturday, March 20th at 12:27PM EST (link)

I hope you’re right.

I know he’s not one of the mythical blue dogs but when that myth died you have to wonder other myths are waiting their turn to die. No, I don’t watch MSNBC. Most of the time I troll news sites rather than listen to any of them.

Today I have Fox in the background for when I’m here at the computer but I’m putting my pent up frustration to good use today. I got the sledge hammer out and repairing the fence around the backyard.

Hubby asked if I could swing it and I replied that all I have to do is think of Pelosi and it’s a piece of cake.

They taste terrible. Not sure what your point is.

JSobieski (Diary) Sunday, March 21st at 7:11PM EST (link)

I am actually on your side. My comments about Stupak were quite narrow and specific. I will repeat them here:
(1) Not a Blue Dog–he is a true liberal
(2) He wants HCR to be passed–he made that clear
(3) Held up so far–a statement that was true for months and months while all others fell in minutes (see Nelson et al)
(4) Best shot at stopping HCR—true, proven via breach

Never said I supported him, just defended his conduct when it was worth defending. Not defending his conduct since it became unworthy of defending.

My point in past comments was that we needed to get Ds voting N, and it made no sense to pile on people who were by all appearances, going to vote with our side.

I have already mailed a check to an R who will be running against him.

I think Pelosi found the prospect of adding a Senate vote on the Stupak language a dead end

The Stupak language passed again the House (with the help of the GOP), and the Stupak language failed again in the Senate (with the helpf of the GOP). People forget that the procedure Stupak proposed would have required the Senate to approve the same language on a majority vote.

The GOP would have enough swing votes to keep either house of Congress from creating work product that matched the bill of the other house.

Its not clear if pro-lifers like the Catholica bishops would be sophisticated enough to give the Republican senators a pass on a “pro-choice” bill.

The procedural confusion that would result from such a scenario may be why Pelosi bagged.

a) what the heck, I was going to vote for it all along and was just pretending to care.

or

b) forget it. we’ve killed enough babies this year.
