Clothes: Sarah Palin’s vs Michelle Obama’s

I won’t reiterate the hoopla that was made during the campaign over the NRC getting Sarah Palin some extra clothes to wear. But it’s worth contrasting it with the reporting on Michelle Obama’s threads.

At last night’s bash for the Hollywood limousine liberals and the Indian Prime Minister, Michelle went all out on her dress it seems. Quotes below are from one AP article, though I’ve changed the order a bit.

First lady Michelle Obama chose to wear a gleaming silver-sequined, cream-colored gown Tuesday night to the first state dinner held by her husband’s administration. She was tending to her hostess duties in a strapless silhouette with the beads forming an abstract floral pattern that was custom-made by Naeem Khan.

She wore a matching wrap, a stack of bangle bracelets on her wrist and dangling earrings.

The guests of honor at the dinner were Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife, Gursharan Kaur, making Mrs. Obama’s choice of the Indian-born, U.S.-based designer seem very appropriate.

So far so good.

Khan told CNN’s Larry King that his goals were to dress the first lady in something “Indian, chic, simple but very glamorous.”

Designer Khan is no stranger to helping women make a grand entrance; he has become a fixture on the Hollywood red-carpet circuit, dressing Beyonce, Carrie Underwood, Katherine Heigl and even Queen Noor of Jordan. Mrs. Obama’s gown took three weeks at the designer’s family workshop in India — with 40 people working on it — to complete, Khan said.

So it took over two person-years of work to make one dress for Michelle Obama to wear for a couple of hours, never to be seen again? Gee, was any child labor involved? Did the people get paid a living wage? Were working conditions monitored? Imagine if Palin wore something that took two years’ worth of labor! The AP would send a dozen people over for weeks to try to find an underage, underpaid, overworked seamstress.

Earlier today for a preview of the event, Mrs. Obama wore a skirt by Rachel Roy, also an Indian-American. “That gave us a preview that she was going to use clothes to convey a meaning,” said Mary Tomer, author of the new book “Mrs. O: The Face of Fashion Democracy.”

“They were really thoughtful choices,” she said.

“I think she looks fabulous,” said Tomer. “She walked out in something that’s figure-flattering and chic. Naeem’s work is known for glamour and embellishment and this dress seems to embody that. She’s sparkling and radiant.”

So there is some deep meaning demonstrated by Michelle’s extensive staff getting her Indian clothes to wear when an Indian politician is visiting?

“The nice thing about it is the Jackie Kennedy sort of appropriateness. Most people wouldn’t know one way or another about Naeem’s background, but if one sentence gets mentioned to the prime minister, then her subtleness would pay off,” added Hal Rubenstein, fashion director for InStyle magazine.

Rubenstein said he was impressed that Mrs. Obama used her fashion knowledge to choose a sophisticated and regal style that paid homage to India without wearing a traditional sari-style dress, which could have come off as a costume next to India’s first lady.

Of Mrs. Obama, Rubenstein said: “She looks like she’s worth her weight in solid gold. What I love about her is that it’s a pleasure to watch a woman of size and stature not apologize for her height and know how to stand tall.”

Ah, more nuance and style and meaning to be found in Michelle’s selection. Sarah Palin was unfit for office because the NRC rents some clothes for her; Michelle gets compared to Jackie O. for wearing a dress that wasted thousands of hours of human resources.

From what I recall the fuss over sarah palin’s clothes during the campaign was that campaign money was going to clothing… and 150K at that.

Now you didn’t mention if the dress Michelle was wearing was paid for by the DNC or not, but sofar I don’t see anything to be outraged over… it was after all a state dinner.

Michelle Obama never had to pay a cent for any clothes...

… at least, during the campaign; they were provided for free. Presumably this didn’t violate campaign finance laws because she wasn’t a candidate; but bk is right to point out the media bias.

when we are bleeding jobs by the day, you kinda think that the Obamas would not make blatant statements of their new found wealth and stature. Didn’t Obama tell us all that we can’t keep our thermostats at 70, and we can’t eat all that we want. Even Jimmah Cater sat in the WH with a sweater on for his fireside chats, while we froze in our homes, and waited in gas lines to refuel our vehicles. You don’t tell people they have to sacrifice, and then turn around and wear a gown worth thousands that after a few hours will be relegated to the Obama museum. You don’t preach that we all have too much, and then wear $500. sneakers to a soup kitchen for a photo op. You don’t go on $29,000 date night to NY. His extensive traveling is wasting millions on fuel and security because he gets bored in the WH if he’s there more than a few days. The Obamas are making sure that we all know that they are the new members of the jet setters, but they will make sure they are the last members of that lofty crowd.

The RNC/McCain campaign paid for Palin’s outfits. The DNC/Obama campaign probably paid for outfits for both Barack and Michelle. That came from funds voluntarily offered by people who wanted them to win…or at least who supported the parties.

YOU paid for Michelle Obama’s outfits for the state dinner, whether you wanted to or not.

The primary process is FLAWED. Two states should not decide our candidate.

Bingo - that's why it's 100x worse to me

Given the uproar in the press over Palin, can you imagine if Cindy McCain or Palin had been in the WH and done something similar? We’d have heard that it proves they hate unions to get it made abroad and that it was probably done with near-slave labor under terrible conditions, etc. With the Obamas we are supposed to show it proves she’s the second coming of a US queen of Camelot.

Almost nothing that Gov. Palin or anyone else from Alaska

would have would be appropriate to wear in high summer in most of the Lower 48, so without regard to who bought it, she and the family would have needed clothes that fit in with a Presidential Campaign. The only places you’ll routinely see suits and ties and women in business suits are Court, the highest levels of big businesses, the upper levels of the federal government, and the highest levels of State and local government. In most places dress clothing pretty much automatically translates into “I’m from the government.” You don’t know what conspicuous feels like until you walk down Front Street in Nome on the way to an 8 AM meeting in a blue “power suit.”

In state government below about the director level and some of the people who work directly for directors, the uniform is various deriviatives of “Northwest grunge.” There hasn’t been a place in Juneau to buy mens’ suits since the mid-nineties and there’s only one or two places to buy women’s dress clothing. If you have to wear dress clothes to work in Juneau, you buy in ANC or SEA or you get it mail order. There’s a lot more shopping in Anchorage, including a fairly large Nordstrom’s and many specialty shops, but most people here don’t have any sort of summer dress clothes wardrobe; you just wear the same stuff you wear the rest of the year but without the parka or top coat.

My wife and I used to do a fair bit of business travel Outside plus we tried to spend at least a couple weeks in Mexico every winter. We literally have a bunch of boxes in the attic labelled “Outside and Mexico” so we have something to wear down there. If we had to play dress up at meetings, we just took the lightest stuff we had and did our best to stay in the air-conditioning. Gov. Palin was always pretty well dressed and fixed up, and believe me you notice women in Alaska that you can say that about, but not much that she wore here wouldn’t have been conspicuously out of place in the East and South, less so in The West other than Coastal California, which has its own distinct uniform.

A lot of it was simply East Coast and media bias wanting to make fun of the rube from Alaska who didn’t have any fittin’ clothes and played country girl come to town. It is now a matter of record that the campaign bought it all and thrust it on her. But the simple fact is that neither she, Todd, nor the kids would have had a stitch that they could have comfortably and fashionably worn from the stage at a campaign appearance in summer in the Lower 48.

In Vino Veritas

Exactly

And by the same token, former lawyer/mayoral staffer/hospital exec Michelle Obama no doubt has an extensive wardrobe that would be suitable for any occasion in Washington, including last night’s dinner. Instead of having two years worth of manual labor going into what was in effect a photo op, she could have grabbed any number of suits off her closet rack and I bet the Indian PM and spouse would have felt the event was just as impressive.

I'm all for her wearing a new dress

Quite honestly….she is the First Lady and such things are expected.

What grates me is that she chooses outrageously complicated and expensive outfit(s) while her husband and the administration cry of recession, unemployment etc.

She could easily have chosen something gorgeous that did not play havoc with taxpayer dollars.

Just more of the usual double standard

The worse was the manufactured outrage over Bush’s 2005 inauguation vs. the silence over Obama’s inauguration in terms of expenditures. So Sarah gets pilloried and Michelle get lauded since she’s “on our side”.

The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis
