Thune’s pro-2nd amendment measures goes down to defeat

From the diaries by Erick.

It only got 58 votes, with Lugar and Voinovich voting against it. Reid voted yes, but one has to wonder if he would have done so had he been the 60th vote.

Schumer is so full of sh1t

NeoKong (Diary) Wednesday, July 22nd at 3:18PM EST (link)

“Senator Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York, a leading opponent of the amendment, said in a statement. “The passage of this amendment would have done more to threaten the safety of New Yorkers than anything since the repeal of the assault weapons ban.”

When was the last time someone was murdered with an assault weapon in New York…? How many people are murdered by out of state travelers who are licensed to carry a fire arm with a legally purchased weapon?
As usual a Democrat tries to equate legal gun ownership with illegal gun ownership as if they are the same thing.
Shumer tries to make it look like he is reducing crime by coming down on people who for the most part are not committing gun crimes while those that do couldn’t care less about the law.

As for the two Republicans who voted against the amendment I hope the voters remember where they stood when it came time to protect their rights.

to get between Sen Schumer and a TV camera?

I wonder if this maroon has any idea

Lammo (Diary) Wednesday, July 22nd at 7:24PM EST (link)

how much carry reciproccity there already is. My WA permit is good in 19 other states. Our local indoor range offers a class for a Utah non-resident permit that would take me up to around 30. If these idiots were actually concerned about safety, they would allow CCW reciprocity and do away driving license reciprocity (sorry if that gives them any ideas).

Here’s a great source for CCW info, including a reciprocity map:

A pair of spineless wimps

Kyle-MI (Diary) Wednesday, July 22nd at 3:55PM EST (link)

If I am reading this correctly, Snowe and Collins voted for it, but those spineless wimps, Lugar and Voinovich, voted against it. What is wrong with those two?

Lugar Is Becoming an Increasing Problem - We Need To Get Rid of Him

IJB Wednesday, July 22nd at 4:24PM EST (link)

Anyone from IN with an opinions on getting rid of this fossil?

Good luck.

I went looking at Lugar’s election record on ourcampains.com (http://www.ourcampaigns.com/CandidateDetail.html?CandidateID=194). He has had no primary fight in either 1994, 2000, or 2006 (no information on 1988, or 1982 , he was challenged in the primary in 1976 when he first won the seat)

He hasn’t been held below 65% in the General Election since 1982. The Democrats didn’t even bother running anyone against him in the 2006 election…

Why should they bother?

Things Change

What I am trying to determine is whether IN Republicans are starting to get tired of this act. I’m hoping they are.

Not a closed primary...

naraht Thursday, July 23rd at 12:54AM EST (link)

In Indiana, when you vote in the primary, you request which ever ballot you want. If you are a known partisan (head of the local Democratic precinct chair for example) your choice can be challenged if you cross over and take a Republican Ballot, but that is *rare*. Now which party primary ballot you picked is now a matter of public record, but that doesn’t help with getting a more conservative Republican to beat Lugar in the Primary.

Sounds Like Mitch Daniels & The IN Legislature Need To Get on That and Close It Up (nt)

Indiana House Dem controlled.

naraht Thursday, July 23rd at 9:52AM EST (link)

Indiana House is 52-48 Dem, Indiana Senate is 33-17 GOP. Prior to the 2008 elections, the House was 51-49 Dem and the Indiana Senate 33-17 GOP.

On the Bright Side

red4ever (Diary) Wednesday, July 22nd at 4:44PM EST (link)

the bill got 20 Dems to vote for it. That is 1/3 of them. That is a darn sight closer to bipartisanship than any of the Dem bills.

Yeah, the threat to human life arguments were way over the top. The threat is not from people legally carrying guns. It’s from the criminals carrying them and law-abiding citizens not being allowed to defend themselves.

Will the NRA campaign against these 9 in 2010?

pilgrim (Diary) Wednesday, July 22nd at 5:58PM EST (link)

Boxer (D-CA)
Dodd (D-CT)
Inouye (D-HI)
Leahy (D-VT)
Mikulski (D-MD)
Murray (D-WA)
Schumer (D-NY)
Specter (D-PA)
Wyden (D-OR)

The rest of the Ds who have to run for reelection in 2010 all voted Aye.

Why would they?

johnCV (Diary) Wednesday, July 22nd at 10:16PM EST (link)

They have no issues with either holder or sotomoyor. The nra has become a self-serving, inside the beltway, political blancmange.

Some of these would love to have the NRA come out

naraht Wednesday, July 22nd at 10:34PM EST (link)

Maryland and Virginia are perfect examples of where the NRA doesn’t and does have power. In Maryland, Mikulski would take a zero rating from the NRA as a badge of honor and might even emphasize it in the campaign. In Virginia, there is no way that a Democrat running for Statewide office would tick off the NRA.
