One segment this week certainly topped it. Even Hughley seemed embarrassed that this Frank Schaeffer guy was a such an over-the-top nutcase at the end.
I don’t know diddly about Evangelicals, but apparently this guy Schaeffer’s dad Francis was an early leading Evangelical and now his kid does a Ron Reagan and spends his time blogging on HuffPo about how evil the Christian Right is. Here are a few of his comments (paraphrased except where quoted) from Hughley’s show this weekend. First some of the milder stuff, then the juicy ones as he got rolling.
- Bush was unqualified to be President, and the only reason he got elected was because he believed in Jesus.
- The only reason McCain chose Palin is because she was a born-again Christian.
- He supported Obama from the get-go.
- His dad would have supported the GOP on pro-life issues, but would have been against the gay-bashing, political correctness (from the right), the war in Iraq.
- The religious right has gone in a “hard-ass neo-Fascist” direction.
- People like his dad, Dobson, Falwell, Robertson et al “put all this crap in place” that gave us 8 years of a failed presidency among other things.
- The GOP base consists of religious and neocon ideologues and the “uneducated white underclass” plus a few token blacks who go on TV to obscure the “all-white … rube reality.”
- Everyone in the GOP leadership is either pandering to religious right or the neocons who believe “every war is a good war.”
- “…crazy…” “…fruit loops…” They believe anyone who is not a white straight fundamentalist Christian is “the enemy.”
- The election of Obama is “a miracle.”
- Republicans truly “hate” Obama.
- There is this “loud” fringe of 20M people who are the only ones listening to Rush, buying Ann Coulter’s books, giving money to GOP candidates, etc.
- He compared them to “the drunk on the subway making all the trouble at the end of the car” and “the one ass at the front end of the car who’s molesting women” amid the 100 “decent citizens” on the subway.
Oh and by the way, later in the show DL showed clips and commentary intended to be humorous. He “quipped” that Ann Coulter “puts the ‘C’ in CPAC.”

What the .....
Rod_Patrick (Diary) Monday, March 9th at 6:44AM EST (link)bk, this is all BS.
Of couse, Bush is a Christian. Palin is a Christian. Even McCain is a Christian. All the forefathers were Christians (unless I missed something from school).
But I thought Obama was a Christian? Am I wrong or something?
Are they saying that they voted for Obama because he’s Anti-Christian (against the Christians)? A Friend of the Muslims?
Pandering to Religious Right? Ah… Yes! Obama didn’t just pander to the Religious Right….. he pandered the Nihilist and Anti-Christian Left.
Obama’s election … a miracle? Even Satan and his minions can make great miracles. But it’s not a miracle. Dems let it happen.
The rant is the actually very Fascist against Christians.
THE DEMS ARE ACTING LIKE THE ANTI-CHRISTIAN NEROs. I WILL STAND PROUD AS A CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVE EVEN IF OBAMA PUTS ME IN A LION’S DEN.
I guess they voted for Obama because he was "qualified"
bk (Diary) Monday, March 9th at 6:51AM EST (link)Not sure what his measuring stick is – I guess being a community organizer is more of a qualification than being governor of one of the largest states.
bk, I really don't care about Obama whether he was qualified or not to run as POTUS.
Rod_Patrick (Diary) Monday, March 9th at 6:59AM EST (link)The Nov2008 election was over.
After 2 months….. I CONCLUDED THAT HE’S NOT EVEN QUALIFIED TO BE A PTA President.
As for Schaeffer, he’s not even qualified to use a kid’s straight ruler as a measuring stick.
If I may add...
Rod_Patrick (Diary) Monday, March 9th at 6:53AM EST (link)Fascists are always the one in power.
Last time I looked, Obama won. Democrats completely control the government.
The Dems in some states are trying to usurp the traditional powers of Catholic bishops and clergies.
In short:
It’s better for the Dems to watch their own back… They are the ones most susceptible to Satan’s lair to become Leftist Fascists.
I'm not understanding it.
mikefisk (Diary) Monday, March 9th at 7:20AM EST (link)Never heard of his father, never heard of him (until he started squawking like a parrot to any idiot with a camera). “Prominent” this guy isn’t.
First off, while I won’t argue that there are hateful people within the Republican Party that use religion and anything else they can as a bludgeon, those people aren’t on the forefront. They aren’t leaders. They aren’t running major think tanks and policy shops. They’re ostracized, as well they should be. In the Democratic Party, those animated primarily by visceral animus run the show.
Secondly, if he thinks of opposing gay marriage as being “hateful” toward homosexuals, and thinks his father felt the same way… well, I wasn’t aware that this “prominent evangelical” was from one of the most liberal denominations (Methodist, Presbyterian, UCC, oddly enough, the denominations of three of our last four Presidents, two of them being Republicans)…
There’s a lot of nasty things that one can say about elements of the GOP leadership, but “hateful” isn’t really one, unless, of course, you’re choosing look less at reality and more at comic books and scripts of NBC procedural shows. And if he tries reframing his issue as “zealotry” rather than “Christianity” as the problem with the GOP, allow me to reference environmentalism and adherence to the welfare state as items to which the garden variety Democrat clings to more tightly, irrespective of the facts, than Obama thinks we cling to guns and God.
In conclusion, all I can say about these sorts of people is to see how often they go on to various shows with somebody in direct opposition to them. While they’ve been coddled for years upon years with adulatory back-pats, we have to have our arguments tempered through years of hostile questioning, interrogation, and “gotcha” moments. Let this milk-fed baby go toe-to-toe with one of our steak-raised champions, and see if the baby cries afterward.

mom2oneson (Diary) Monday, March 9th at 8:00AM EST (link)His dad was a sort of the philospher type, his writing is more in response to unchristian philosophers, he was mainstream but not everyone would have read him. He books are still very popular with faculty at Christian colleges. How Should We Then Live and The God Who Is There is probably on most evangelcal pastor’s bookshelves. Someone that hasn’t read Marx and Engels isn’t going to be all that insterested in his work.
The left seens religious/conservative as all the same group, conservative sand evangelicals are “fundies” to them, they don’t understand the differences in evangelicals vs fundamentalists, they don’t understand mainstream churches vs groups that aren’t accepted by them, the differences when a group shares the same name (souther baptists vs a small independent/fundamentalist baptist church) I’m sure there are those that understand it, but this is something many liberals especially the younger crowd doesn’t see the differences to, just like we have our own misconceptions too.
They hate anything that is religious at all.

I think I’ve heard the guy’s name, but he’s nothing to me. And judging from the tone of both the article and the video, I think he may have rabies.
