Cigarette Taxes Don’t Work

On today’s Intellectual Redneck: Cigarette taxes will not curb tobacco use. As it becomes more of a status symbol, more kids will take up smoking. Cigarettes will also become the property of the rich, same as expensive cigars. Poor people will buy cheap cigarettes, cigars, and snuff. They will huddle outdoors in the cold, and workplace illnesses will continue to rise. More rich people will take up recreational smoking, and insurance rates will continue to climb. Mark my words.

We’ll be live blogging from the Masters all week at Intellectual Redneck .Com!  Our prediction?  Phil Mickelson.

Define "work".

If they are meant to squeeze as much revenue out of a segment of the people that can’t break the nicotine habit, the cigarette tax works just fine.

If the tax is meant to promote cheap foreign tobacco imports, the cigarette tax works just fine.

If the tax helps inflate insurances rates, thereby strengthing the case for government relief from an overburdened insurance system, the cigarette tax works just fine.

Criterion Chemical was in the black for FY2010!
Not bad considering the forces arrayed against small business these days.
Let’s see about actually making some serious profit this year. Shameless capitalism, by:
