Er…not so sure about this one. Palin? She is NOT ready to be President of my country. I’m sorry, just not. This isn’t smart–it’s obviously political. And it doesn’t even seem politically strategic. She’s supposed to debate Biden? Shoulda at least been Pawlenty,

I kid, I kid. Seriously, massive credit to McCain & Co. for running a great counterintelligence campaign on the Veepstakes. First we were all convinced it was Romney, then we all thought it might Lieberman, then we all KNEW it was Pawlenty, and all the while Palin snuck in under our noses. Way to dominate the news cycle, Johnny Mac!

I’m very excited about this pick. I worry about the “experience” thing but I think it’s not the big deal people are making it out to be. Obama is still a tyro running for prez compared to McCain. Additionally, I think that Biden won’t be able to really beat up on Palin in the debate without looking like a real jerk.

McCain is a genius

NickDeringer (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 10:01AM EST (link)

She puts the drilling issue in the front of the campaign.

She siphons off even more of the disaffected Hillary voters from Obama.

She is strongly pro life and is a sharp contrast to the pro-abortionists on the Dem ticket.

She is strongly conservative which demonstrates that McCain hasn’t turned his back on the conservative base. They will be fired up and excited. Donations will be through the roof.

Did I mention that McCain is a genius?

This is a homerun in oh so many ways.

Already the media has fallen into the trap of comparing our VP candidates experience with their presidential candidate.

Biden must feel like he just got castrated, LOL.

With respect to Pawlenty,

Tanggor (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 10:05AM EST (link)

You figure Obama is? She has more executive experience than Obama ever will have. Sure, it’s Alaska.

As Achance will tell you, Alaska is different. But, that just means that she’s not a “Washington Insider”.

And, her nickname used to be “Barracuda”. Pretty, smart, conservative girl with a nickname like that can do the job.

And remember, she’s VP – she’ll have time to adjust to Washington, and learn the ropes from veterans.

Oh how I love thee Sarah. Let me count the ways.

Dilutes the experience brand, but threads the needle exactly. Acceptable to moderates but strongly pro-life? Check. Reform Cred? Check. Good on energy policy? Check, and perceived as anti-oil industry to boot. Historic choice? Check. Puts team McCain solidly into a weekend news cycle that should be all-Obama-all-the-time? Check.

Yes, she’s a newcomer and a risk. Joe Biden might eat her alive at the debates (or not). But McCain didn’t forget that he’s still the underdog, polls notwithstanding, and made a good, bold move.

I said McCain would reinforce his maverick proclivities with this pick. You guys went with your heart not your head.

I must say given her gender and political leanings, this is an exciting time. Women in my family that have never voted, have now said they will vote the McCain-Palin ticket!

“Both of our political parties, at least the honest portion of them, agree conscientiously in the same object—the public good; but they differ essentially in what they deem the means of promoting that good. One side believes it best done by one composition of the governing powers; the other, by a different one. One fears most the ignorance of the people; the other, the selfishness of rulers independent of them. Which is right, time and experience will prove.”.Thomas Jefferson

tcgeol (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 10:16AM EST (link)

Maybe Zoot agrees. I can’t see her as anything other than an affirmative action pick. I’m not putting Mrs. Palin down personally, but she doesn’t have the experience and accomplishments that have been demanded from everyone else.

Her conservatism is good as well as her pro-life and energy stances, but there are 45 million other people in the US that hold the same views.

With Sanford, Pawlenty, Romney, Cox, even Fred (although we knew there was no chance), I can’t see where she was the best pick for anything other than identity politics.

shooflyguy68 Friday, August 29th at 10:19AM EST (link)

Gov Palin’s nomination completely undermines the message of the last 3 months that claimed that Obama didn’t have the resume or the experience. She’s not going to win Hillary voters because Hillary voters are pro-choice.

I’ve seen her speak before and she is bright and feisty but Biden will kill her in any foreign policy debate.

However, given the other options for Sen. McCain, this was probably his best choice. The bottom line is that we will have to depend on the top of the ticket to carry the weight in this election and hope that Palin doesn’t make any major mistakes.

She is as much outside of Washington as one could possibly be in every facet of her experience.

He has experience in playing the game of corrupt Chicago politics.

She has experience breaking up corrupt good old boy networks.

He has experience fighting for killing of botched abortion babies and the birth of his perfectly healthy kids.

She has experience dealing with having to decide whether to kill her extra chromosome baby or to give birth to it.

Tanggor (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 10:29AM EST (link)

but in the most respectful way, of course.

How does this possibly undercut the experience argument? When we talk about experience, we are talking about POTUS. This situation still stands: McCain has it, Obama does not.

If you compare Biden to Palin, Biden has more years – but they’re the wrong kind. Insider Washington, equivocator, plagiarist, vs executive experience as a mayor and Governor.

If you compare Obama to Palin (which is apples and oranges anyway), she still wins. Sure, small population. But she’s true to her values, and acts on what she believes, not on what will boost her to the next level of adulation.

All this negative experience stuff about Palin is nonsense, with the exception of Achance’s observation that her experience needs the right seasoning. She’s been a bit ham-fisted in her methods of dealing with her current crisis in Alaska.

As VP, she’ll be getting an in-depth course on that skill set right quick (and she’ll have mentors – lot’s of ‘em).

Maybe I’m wrong. I’ve been wrong about stuff before.

But in this case, I don’t thing so.

Yes, Sarah Palin has many good qualities. But as loath as many of you may be willing to admit it, just about every affirmative action choice has many good qualities. The real question is, are they the most qualified?

And quite frankly, Sarah Palin is not the most qualified to be the Vice President of the United States.

VPs have to be ready to step in on one second’s notice and take over the country in the midst of a crisis. If Al Quaeda – or someone posing as Al Quaeda – somehow takes out McCain on February 1, it’s showtime for her with immediate decisions to be made. It’s not a safe, learn on the job position.

She may be a great pick. However, up until two years ago her biggest job was running a village of 6,000, and she doesn’t even have two years as governor of a state that’s smaller than lots of American cities.

Given that, her pick is a signal that McCain is not going to pursue the inexperience theme as the basis of his campaign against Obama. To me, it says he’s concluded that the inexperience theme isn’t going to close the sale, and he’s repositioning as an outside the box reform candidate.

shooflyguy68 Friday, August 29th at 10:41AM EST (link)

I just looked up her bio on Wikipedia. Please tell me that’s she wasn’t runner up as Miss Alaska! There goes the whole Obama as celebrity meme. The more I know about her, the worse this pick gets. If it wasn’t 10:30 am here, I would go get myself a drink.

I had always assumed that she was not experienced enough to be on the short list. But on second thought, if Obama attacks her on inexperience, he is making the election about experience. That would elect McCain.

Plus, this makes it much harder to call McCain a Bush III. They will run as maverick reformers, and I think it will work.

Alaska isn't subsidized by Oil.

Achance (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 10:47AM EST (link)

Alaska OWNS oil which it sells to oil producers who in turn sell it to you, about 15% of America’s supply these days. That’s down from about 25% in the ’80s because we can’t develop any more fields since you guys down there like caribou and polar bears so much that you’re willing to pay $4/gallon for gas.

What's it matter that she's a woman?

Canthros (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 10:51AM EST (link)

It would be nice if she had more experience, but it appears that she’s been involved in state and local government for the last sixteen years or so, including stints as mayor and governor (this makes her the only person on either major ticket with any executive experience at all), and a couple years as “Ethics Commissioner of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission”, according to Wikipedia. She resigned that last post over corruption in the state’s Republicans, so she’s also credible on ethics issues.

I’m not even convinced that she’s an affirmative-action choice, as some are alleging, simply because the field of likely candidates doesn’t seem to be that deep. Some of the things people have said about Pawlenty make him sound like a less-than-commanding figure, Jindal’s been in office less than a year. Cantor’s political career appears to have started in 2000 and to be limited to the US Senate (and there’s nothing wrong with that, but how many Senators do we need on a Presidential ticket?).

It may not be a perfect choice, but, from where I’m sitting, it doesn’t look like a bad one.

This too shall pass.

So you don't like Obama. Fine

Palin pick means McCain is Maverick again...

Justin Spagnolo (standardcandle) (Diary) Friday, August 29th at 10:53AM EST (link)

I can’t tell you how many of my moderate liberal friends were waiting for a Lieberman pick… But what keeps them on the fence isn’t whether or not John McCain will be more moderate than conservative it is… “McCain seems to have lost his Maverick edge…” without getting into the pyschology of basing candidate effectiveness on stigma… this pick may cause moderates, especially the HRC moderates to swing GOP.

I think this pick shows that McCain doesn’t think he’s going anywhere but to the whitehouse for 8 years to do things the way he knows how…his way.

Incredible the tight-lipped organization… McCain has GREAT people.

Palin as the VP changes the dynamic of the media attacks that can be levied…

How will they respond to this? We know they’ll use rhetoric to explain how they’re not hypocritical for being critical of a Woman who can balance family and career…

To Gov. Palin… congratulations, and We wish you a long a prosperous career in the GOP.

“What keeps me here is the reek of beer, the ladies and the craic”

I would modify that statement

Wycoff Friday, August 29th at 10:59AM EST (link)

The position of Vice President is peculiarly political. It’s the most ambiguous of our primary political offices. The selection of the running mate has almost always been a choice based on political strategy (“ticket-balancing”).

Experience matters most when deciding who should be president. Political matters are more significant (and basing your decision upon them is more appropriate) when that presidential candidate chooses a running mate.

There’s no VP SAT or other objective way to determine who’s most qualified to be the VP. As I’ve said, political matters are of utmost importance to these decisions, and they help to determine who is the most qualified VP. With that in mind, and cosidering Palin’s executive experience, I believe that she was a well-qualified candidate.

In full disclosure and in all honesty, if the Democratic ticket were Clinton-Obama or Biden-Obama, I would consider Obama to be a qualified VP candidate.

So,Mord, are you now saying that Obama is qualified because he is "popular"?

Personally why even vote for a guy you’re assuming could die at any moment?

In my mind, she (or a new-style GOP politician) would have to be the pick to counter the promises of Obamaland (not to mention that Romney, Crist, and Huckabee were damaged goods with some hint of scandal). She is a lot more qualified than Obama, having performed the change that he can only ‘dream’ about. No one can be more unqualified than John Tyler to be VP (or Pres), except Obama.

If the GOP seems to play the identity politics game, maybe it’s just we can pick someone decent. I’m tired of hearing the self-righteous crud about how the Democrats champion civil liberties and equality, but push people into the street.

My only concern about Palin is the fact that if Parnell wins the Senate seat, some corrupt Democratic goober will be in charge of Alaska.

She sure did enough to turn Alaska on its ear!

This is why independents should sit up and take notice. She’s not a party hack but a genuine, honest, conservative reformer who went up against the Alaska ‘good ol boys’ … and won:

Palin has a long history of run-ins with the Alaska GOP hierarchy, giving her genuine maverick status and reformer credentials that could complement McCain’s image.

Two years ago, she ousted the state’s Republican incumbent governor, Frank Murkowski in the primary, despite having little money and little establishment backing.

She has also distanced herself from two senior Republican office-holders, sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don young. Both men are under federal corruption investigations.

She had earned stripes — and enmity — after Murkowski made her head of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. From that post, she exposed ethical violations by the state GOP chairman, also a fellow commissioner.

and popularity is what gets you elected. I am not saying that qualifications are un-important. I am saying that you can’t compare elections to affirmitive action.

The only quality that counts in the end, is what the voters believe about you. There are certainly alot of people who think Obama is Qualified” be predisent. These are the same people who claim Palin isn’t “qualified” to be VICE president.

What qualities does a president need besides approval of the Public? I know, I know, A president should know economics, foriegn policy, blah- blah. My point is, there are literally millions of people who know more about all of these things than our current president does. He just happens to have the temperment and personality that makes presidents, the millions of REAL experts don’t, thats why they are political appointees in an administration or armchair pundits.

Can I explain it any clearer? All that matters in the end is the Vote.

This is a great pick for the McCain campaign. My donation will be heading out tonight.

BTW, something people aren’t talking about much… based on what I’m seeing and reading of her…

Palin/Jindal could be the dream ticket for Republicans come 2012.

Especially against the Hillary/X ticket.

If McCain just goes the one term, as he very well may, having Sarah Palin with four years in the White House as the VP (in the modern post-Cheney era, the VP is an important position) could be a wonderful thing for us.

This is a fantastic choice by McCain.

The safe pick would have been Tim Pawlenty, this was consensus.

Many rejected the possibility of Palin simply on the fact that she is not nationally known.

Some less informed rejected the possibility because for some reason they base “experience” on notareity and size of constituency.

I’m a huge fan of Romney btw, but even I recognized issues from that type of ticket that would serve neither McCain, Romney, or the GOP’s best interest.

I’m excited about Palin…would have accepted Pawlenty,Sanford,Chris Cox, Cantor etc… but Palin brings much of that flavor, but adds new dynamics that I believe will be advantageous.

So tell me your opinion if you like…I can accept that…

but using a complaint like “Palin’s inexperienced…what if McCain dies…” is really poor analysis and comes across to me as an admission of dissappointment that your pick was not McCain’s pick.
