Obama Eats Ice Cream, Bodysurfs as Russia Rolls Onward

And even the New York Times complains

Obama Bodysurfs

When the Russian tanks roll westward,
what defence for you and me?
Colonel Sloman’s Essex Rifles?
The Light Horse of L.S.E.?
-Philip Larkin

You know this is a “Now watch this drive” moment when even the New York Times is attacking Barack Obama for his horribly timed vacation. The One insists on iced cream, you see: and he will not be interrupted in his quest, not by the beach patrol, not by Hawaiian tourists, and most assuredly not by the armed might of Russia.

Only once, at the beginning of the week, did Mr. Obama discuss the fighting in public, when he emerged from his beachfront rental home to condemn Russia’s escalation, in a way that seemed timed for the evening television news. He took no questions whose answers might demonstrate command of the issue.

Mr. McCain and his surrogates, however, have discussed the situation nearly every day on the campaign trail, often taking a hard line against Russia to the point of his declaring the other day, “We are all Georgians.”

It is as if the candidates’ images have been reversed within a matter of a few weeks. When Mr. Obama was overseas last month, Mr. McCain’s foreign policy bona fides seemed diminished, if only because he could not attract the news media attention received by Mr. Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. Now, Mr. Obama’s voice seems muted at a time when much of the world has been worriedly watching the conflict.

The Russians like this new kitten, and they’re not finished toying with him, not by a long shot. The announcement regarding Poland’s right to exist today is more than just saber-rattling: the world media is focused on the Olympics, there’s a lame duck in the White House and a SecState who’ll be gone even if McCain wins – and all the while the man most likely to be the next President of the United States is lounging on a beach.

It’s the perfect time to set the parameters for the next four years of diplomatic engagement – or engagement of a different variety.

A top Russian general said Friday that Poland’s agreement to accept a U.S. missile defense battery exposes ex-communist nation to attack, possibly by nuclear weapons, the Interfax news agency reported.

First Georgia, then Ukraine, then Poland – and of course, not incidentally, there’s that whole thing called “pipelines” in the mix.

But Barack Obama’s not taking any questions. Just put on a lei, order another frozen drink, and watch this drive.

Obama is missing in action. Today, participated in conference call with a Radio Free Europe reporter who is on the ground outside of Gori. During the conversation you could hear Russian tanks in the background and he reported on refugees fleeing the scene.

Check out the links in this caseforfreedom.org post.

The first one is to Robert Bluey’s Twitter feed on the conversation.

Really?

I fear that the respect that the conservative party commands may be in jeapordy by bylines like this. Was Obama absent during this international event? Great! Lets report that. But rubbing salt in the wound by picking apart what food he was eating makes us appear childish. This type of politics worked in the past, but I fear that it wont last. Rather that risk looking like the mud-throwers here, what if we rose above and showed ourselves as fact-throwing, intellegent people? Report the facts, not the opinions. People need to see their canidate for who they are, not for who the other isn’t.

Funny, I seem to remember the whole Republican party pouncing on Obama for being presumptuous and arrogant for sitting down with world leaders last month. Now, when he issues a statement on the conflict, that’s not enough? You guys would be screaming bloody murder if Obama sent his Senate henchmen to Georgia to monitor this situation like McCain has.

That's because Obama would send his advisors to talk with the Russians rather than to show support to the Georgians...Nice Try though...n/t

Tell the AP to stick to reporting facts, and you might be on to something.

And, if you read, nobody’s “picking on” the type of food Obama was eating, just using it to illustrate the point.

And the word you were looking for was “headline.”

Not qualified

BO is not qualified for the presidency…and this little excursion of the Russians into Georgia and now threatening Poland is a prime example that BO would destroy this nation and put us under communist or Islamic rule

And to the liberal posters who are decrying this article: Grow up and stop and smell the roses. BO is unqualified and his not stopping his vacation while trying to act presidental is not doing him any good. In fact it is making sure that America see him for what he is. UNQUALIFIED

in a hypothetical situation is not a good way to “start a conversation”. Nor is misrepresenting legitimate qualms we may have had with Obama’s world tour. And airily breezing past any reasoned criticism of the substance of his statements–yes, there was more than one–is no ice-breaker either.

It is extremely important for United States Senators who are running to be the President of the United States of America to show the American public what they will do when in office and this President has his team working round the clock on this issue BUT that wouldn’t work around your talking points now would it?

Both McCain and Obama need to react strongly when it comes to our friends in other countries…not waffle with stupid little platitudes.

So, its ok to go on vacation

UseYourBrain Friday, August 15th at 3:50PM EST (link)

as long as your team is working the issues and keeping you informed and taking guidance from you? It shows a balance to your life and the ability to not be reactive-driven, but that you know your goals and values and trust them. You trust the people around you to get the job done with the ability to make statements to amplify what your team is doing.

Is that what you are saying?

Personally, I think Obama is doing the right thing in keeping his trap mostly shut and staying out of the way on this. He’s not equipped to deal with important foreign policy matters and, unless he is elected, should leave such discussion to adults.

Obama is exuding Cool by staying on the beach while the Russians are threatening yet another remake of “On the Beach”. It’s not like he has to prove himself to anyone.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, W is rethinking that last look into Putin’s eyes in Beijing and considering his retirement options.

They’re both letting the old guy handle it, and he’s doing a pretty good job, maybe even influencing policy from the campaign trail. Pretty presumptuous of him. If I were supporting Obama, I’d be crying “dirty pool”, too.

Proving himself

UseYourBrain Friday, August 15th at 4:51PM EST (link)

BO will never prove himself to most people on this board no matter what he does, so that is a moot point.

I can’t agree that antagonizing the Russians while proving you are powerless to stop them projecting power in their near-abroad is “a pretty good job”. To me it seems we are getting the worst out of both sides of this deal (loss of Georgian independence and deteriorating relations with Russia).

Obama is teachable. It would take 50 years, but

blooch Friday, August 15th at 5:18PM EST (link)

We are a lost cause for him. It is the moderates and independents which he must convince. I can’t agree completely with your pessimistic assessment of the Georgia/Russia situation, and I’ll bet many voters would disagree with you, too. They may be put off by the languid appearance of Obama’s reaction.

They may not like Bush’s reaction either, but McCain’s performance isn’t going to help push the McSame narrative.

While it’s OK to go on vacation, it’s location location, location, according to Cokie Roberts:

“I know his grandmother lives in Hawaii, and I know Hawaii is a state, but it has the look of him going off to some sort of foreign, exotic place…He should be in Myrtle Beach if he’s going to take a vacation at this time.”

Crawford is a lot closer to Myrtle Beach, if you catch my drift.
