My Take? The Romney Bet Seems Less Important than Gingrich’s Survival of Infidelity Errors

It looks like the pundits on ABC and elsewhere are stirred up about Romney’s idea of making a $10,000 bet, but missing the significance of Gingrich’s survival over the infidelity problem. As you may remember, the challenge of a $10,000 bet was Mitt Romney’s best idea for shutting down Gov. Perry’s attack on his commitment to an individual mandate.

The number did not shock me at all. I saw Bob Beckel make a $10,000 bet on the outcome of the 2012 presidential election with Eric Bolling on The Five just a few days ago. I think it is silly for the ABC pundits to think this is an issue. After all, a tinier bet would have been ridiculous and a much larger bet would have been clearly inappropriate.

To put this issue in context, I should add that Forbes reported that Diane Sawyer made $12 million in 2005. We do not hear the pundits at ABC bringing up that little bit of irony, do we?

I don’t think Bachmann did much to restore her front runner status in Iowa. I think she should have left Herman Cain in his political grave. Sad. Sad. Sad.

As a bit of nostalgia, I remember listening to Gingrich’s GOPAC audio tapes too. I was a young political science professor at Williams College in MA in 1988 who was recruited to run for the state assembly to pin down a guy who might have been a strong Dukakis volunteer in Iowa. I remember listening to those GOPAC tapes. I guess that Rick Santorum brought them up because he is trying to make Newt Gingrich look too old to be president. Rick Santorum was once one of our most precocious citizen politicians rapidly rising from beating a Democrat congressman at age 32 to being a U.S. senator at age 36. Unfortunately, Santorum’s defeat in PA was a big failure. Santorum lost, with 41% of the vote to Casey’s 59% – the largest margin of defeat ever for an incumbent Republican Senator in Pennsylvania.

All in all, I think Gingrich won because he survived that intensive attack on his infidelity. By the end, I was feeling sorry for him even though he made a big mistake. Gingrich is going through a trial by fire and surviving as a stronger candidate according to the recent primary voter polls. Clearly, you do not become president by making yourself into the best candidate. It is much easier to make your opponents the worst candidates.

I expect that the voters will see this as, in part, fitting punishment for the seemingly repentant Gingrich and a necessary ritual for him to endure on his path to the White House and the overthrow of the Marxist socialist Obama regime.

Infidelity damage done

sethellis Sunday, December 11th at 1:47AM EST (link)

I think the damage from Newt’s past had already been done. It might not be fully reflected in the polls, but I doubt this is going to be the issue that sinks him. I really don’t understand what people expected to happen in the debate regarding this issue. It was about as predictable as it gets. Perhaps that’s why many think it’s a victory for Gingrich.

Many people did not know about Meets past, and Romney did not shut

anything down the moderators did. The fact is Romney took the passage out, and by his own admission he did it because Obama care had been passed after the Hard copy came out. Anybody who claims anything different is lying to themselves. A analysis after the debate said it was not true, but its because the lefties at ANCE lobe Romney, on there web site they had fixed that. Romney claims he was not for mandate, but that’s why he is falling, because people only have to watch and read to know its a huge lies. Newt on the other hand may get hurt, because there were a lot of people who did not know the extent he had cheated, in fact he asked his second wife to marry him before he was divorced from first, according to her at least. That’s bad news for the Party if he does get the nomination.

I know I'm ready to take the 'fight' to BO

carolina Sunday, December 11th at 9:38AM EST (link)

and I find Newt’s direct approach refreshing. I’m sick of smooth politicians that I do not trust.
I don’t know how the masses will react, but I would like to hit the failed BO policies hard.
I think Santorum did a big favor for Newt when he brought up the GOPAC tapes. I also appreciate Newt’s supply side economic policies.
I also like the idea that a lot of the DC elite are worried about Newt. He may be just the right person for these times.

Carolina, I'm wondering about the DC elite response

lineholder (Diary) Sunday, December 11th at 9:03PM EST (link)

to Newt, too. What I’ve got is mostly anecdotal information, but my father says Newt was a rebel and half in his early days, and that he could easily bring that element of his personality to the surface and channel it towards Conservative policies if he wants to. I can’t see the DC elites wanting to that happen, and I think I can understand how the thought that he might do that scares the you-know-what out of them.

Newt did not survive the Infidelity Charge

kipling (Diary) Sunday, December 11th at 6:11PM EST (link)

The question was designed to induce a slow bleed of the Newt campaign much like the slow bleed inflicted on the Cain campaign as the charges slowly began to trickle out.

The issue is not dead and will be used increasingly in the future, especially if Newt becomes the nominee.

Where do the divorced wives stand on the issue of a Newt candidacy? Have they made their peace with him? Or, will we be subjected to a special Oprah with a crying former spouse talking about how Newt betrayed her trust and ruined their family?

Re: Newt did not survive the Infidelity Charge

bzip Sunday, December 11th at 6:50PM EST (link)

That is what I think – that Newt did not survive/put to rest the infidelity concerns. It will continue to haunt him. I also don’t think he put to rest the concerns about him being a progressive. That too will continue to haunt Newt.

So in spite of the fact that Newt kept his cool which I guess the MSM media uses as a means to claim Newt was the winner – Newt in my book lost last night- because he did not put these issues to rest they will continue to haunt Newt.

Those two things will make Newt bleed slowly. Couple that to Romney’s self inflicted wounds last night and you have her making of a Perry come back.

This was my analysis I posted earlier else where on the debate:

Here is my more defined take on last night:
Winner: Rick Perry
Losers: Romney and Newt

Here is why I think Romney and Newt were the losers (rest assured though the MSM thinks Newt was the winner so my opinions care no weight at all and clearly differ from the MSM):

Both Newt and Romney were painted as progressives with their support of the mandate, TARP, etc. I give Bachmann (though all the candidates piled it on too) credit for painting the:
Newt-Romney = progressive picture at the debate. That was a real hard hit on Newt and Romney.

The pile on Newt last night only adds to the ongoing concerns that have been talk about and brought up since he became the front-runner. In my opinion Newt didn’t put those concerns away last night. Did Newt lose his cool and get frustrated like Romney – No but I don’t call that winning either. Newt was painted alongside Romney as the two most progressives candidates and those concerns will continue onward. Newt’s extra martial affair was also brought up, front and center and I don’t think Newt put that away either – it will continue to be a concern by voters.

That is why I think Newt didn’t win and didn’t help himself much last night.

Romney did very poorly. In addition to the Newt-Romney story painting each the same, each progressive we can add on the “10K bet” Romney made – that was a big gaffe from Romney painting him way out of touch and frustrated by Rick Perry attack.

I firmly believe Romney is going down, he has been going down and last night made it worse. Perry will rise from the concerns of: Romney and Newt.

Bachmann did well but in my opinion she blew it with making a very obvious and sick ploy for Cain’s supporters. She had hammered Cain on the 999 plan in the past, now she brings it up as a great plan – making a clear play for his supports; I thought that was rude.

The big winner: Rick Perry he took it to Obama, he took it to the media and he took it to Romney. He had a wonderful night showing that he can not only debate and that he has improved BUT made some wonderful points and jabs.

I support Governor Rick Perry. Join the Tea and Fed Up Blog.

I think your analysis is spot-on bzip

kipling (Diary) Sunday, December 11th at 7:01PM EST (link)

The whole set-up and structure of the question was intended to set Newt up for the slow bleed. Now each of the other candidates are on record on Newt and infidelity, that will come up in the general if Newt is the nominee and the other move to support him. The idea of a faithless Newt has been planted and will now be nurtured by the MSM.

Last Night's Debate

carolynr Sunday, December 11th at 8:22PM EST (link)

Well…I’ve been reading RS for about one and one half hours now…enjoyed all your comments.

Newt and the Infidelity. Perry was asked the question first…about fidelity and his answer was something to the effect that he not only took at oath to his wife…he took an oath to God. He went on to say that a person that cheats on his wife could likely cheat on his business partner. Hello…Newt…that one was for you.

Santorum about Gingrich’s tapes…I don’t see that as him showing how old Gingrich was but rather that he was pandering for VP slot.
Someone ought to fill Santorum in on something else…unless we have right to work states and fair trade agreements with other countries…we cannot compete in MANUFACTURING. $2.00 a day compared to $75.00 a hour…whose product will come out cheaper. So Santorum’s plan…0 tax. Goodie…we’ll subsidze (tax the people) the companies and help pay union wages.

Bachmann….pleeeze. Although I have to say that she helped out quite a bit by saying Newt Romney…and Perry was able to stay above the fray on that. The fact that she kept repeating it…an Alinsky tactic (sorry Michelle…but it is)…only helped Perry with his stance on Cap and Trade and socialized medicine, i.e., Obamacare. Her remarks about Cain. Well…it was either dumb or she was after his followers. Anyone that really delves into 999 knows that it is a BIG HIT ON THE POOR/MIDDLE CLASS…not to mention…people stop buying…too expensive…with ALL those taxes….AND THIS IS A TAX ATTORNEY????????

Romney started out good…with his numbered solutions. He got caught flat footed with the moon mining remark. He lost big to Perry. (This is where Perry could perform extremely well against Obama…getting under his skin…these two, Perry and Obama are direct opposites).

Perry…I loved him all night…AND he clarified real well on FNS. Wallace tried the same tactic as he did with Bachmann..making derogatory insinuations….but Perry did not flinch….he was great. Oh….if he had taken the bet…he would have won.

Gingrich…He had some good smack down moments. He finally said what everyone else has been saying…the only reason that Romney is not a career politician was because he lost to Teddy Kennedy. Someone got booed on that … I don’t know who they didn’t like…but the boos were out there. Great about the inventive Palistinians.. but Perry had a great counter bringing it back to Obama. Both Gingrich and Romney showed their big shotism with calling PM Nentenyhu (sp)…BeBe. It’s like..”.touch me…you’ll be more important if you know me” type thing.

Paul – there was a surprise for me. I will have to watch this over again. When asked about Gingrich being a serial (forget the name he called Gingrich)…Paul was NOT SPECIFIC. Paul could have nailed him good. He did mention Freddie Mac…but with all the info Paul has…he should have nailed Gingrich to the cross. He did say that he took money…and of course, Gingrich came back that he should be allowed to take money for consulting jobs when asked to provide a service. This is where Paul should have said…yes…and what you consulted with them about led to the housing debacle. He could have called him the Republican version of Barney Frank. ..or Franklin Raines. Paul also went over most people’s head about bubbles…which most average people do not understand. I don’t think he was on his best last night…just a feeling.

Get this....I've seen two of those polls "Who do you think won the debate?"

avagreen Sunday, December 11th at 8:47PM EST (link)

Paul was like 6,500 votes, with all the rest under 1,000.

The bots are out in force doing what their guy can’t do.

Really says a lot about polls, doesn’t it?

Rick Perry STILL! doesn’t have or need blood. He is filled with magma.
Rick Perry uses his bare hands to hunt.

Countdown Until Obama Leaves Office.

Gingrich is extremely vulnerable in the general election

David123 (Diary) Monday, December 12th at 8:04PM EST (link)

Newt Gingrich can be considered as the Republican version of Bill Clinton.

Newt Gingrich can also be portrayed as the one leading the effort to impeach Bill Clinton.

Together, both elements put Gingrich in an untenable position. Bill Clinton was either worthy or unworthy of being president. If Bill Clinton was worthy of being president then Newt Gingrich was wrong to impeach him. If Bill Clinton was unworthy of being president, then Newt Gingrich is also unworthy of being president.
