Finally, some clarity on the cryptic remark made by Obama during the campaign. Just its title, The Give Act, is disturbing enough for me.
See Free Republic’s summary here, and the actual bill here.
Required “volunteer” service? Uniforms? Summer Camps (now changed to campuses)?
So how do we make sure our kids aren't drafted for this? (nt)
mom2oneson (Diary) Tuesday, March 17th at 11:06AM EST (link)Return to Revolution, this is, at face value, disturbing
mailloux (Diary) Tuesday, March 17th at 11:39AM EST (link)Thanks for bringing this up and please don’t hesistate to post more on this as you learn more . . . I’ll certainly be looking closer into this.
Take Care, mailloux
So Han Prichard, would you like to comment on this one?
janis (Diary) Tuesday, March 17th at 11:43AM EST (link)Especially since you refused to believe that this was on the O’s agenda during the campaign. Would be interested in your take on it at this point.
here is a link to the text of the bill

This bill scares me a lot more than anything on dKos or Huffpo.
Slavery?
Warrior (Diary) Thursday, March 19th at 1:32PM EST (link)Let’s see. Th e O man and his stooges in Congress outlaw guns. Then your children are required to perform “voluntary” service in order to go to college. Guess who their masters will be? That’s right, a bunch of left-wingers with axes to grind. And forget about being able to opt out just because you can afford to send your kids to college. It will morph into MANDATORY service, just like it will be illegal to seek medical care outside of the O man’s nationalized healthcare.
Thnk the above is far fetched? Forty years ago the idea that abortion would be available on demand, that homosexuals would demand, and get, special rights, that a sitting president would even suggest combat wounded pay for their own care and convalescence was beyond the pale.
I have a better idea. Everybody who receives an unearned govt check (except mentally & physically disabled) will work in the Pay Back Your Bennies welfare army. You will arise at dawn and take your child to the national daycare center. Then you will be picked up for your assigned task for the day. You might pick up litter by the side of the road; empty bedpans at the local hospital; wash govt cars and trucks; or clean out ditches for the county. In other words, since you are unable to produce wealth in the market economy, and the industrious in your city are supporting you, you will learn to give back. And guess what? You may learn how to get off the dole as well!

Couldn't have said it better
Jack_Savage (Diary) Friday, March 20th at 2:19PM EST (link)And add to that weekly drug tests for the Volunteer Welfare Army.
This is more humane than the current 'welfare' system of 'look the other way' enveloped compassion
pitchfork (Diary) Saturday, March 21st at 9:26PM EST (link)democrats don’t believe poor people have anything to offer society besides their vote.
I've read the bill
streiff (Diary) Thursday, March 19th at 1:42PM EST (link)I don’t think much here accurately describes it. It seems to be Americorps on steroids. The biggest gripe I have with it is that it places this new program with a targeted end strength of 250,000 into direct competition with the Armed Forces for 17-21 year old high school grads.

Return to Revolution (Diary) Thursday, March 19th at 3:07PM EST (link)by this administration. I admit that on surface its not much more than a waste to expand Americorps. But consider the following:
- the youtube clip from the campaign was the only instance he mentioned a civilian force. His advisors then told him not to mention that again.
- On his own website (change.gov), there was wording that said service would be “required” (see wnd link below), then was later changed.
From the stimulous bill (i.e., socialization of America bill), to the Son of the Fairness Doctrine (Durbin Amendment), everything this man does is dishonest, deceitful, and hostile to principles of individual rights and capitalism. So yes, I’m very concerned about this bill in the context of everything leading up to it.

UpLateAgain (Diary) Friday, March 20th at 10:16AM EST (link)This is the bunch that values power seizure over good of the country… the group did everything it could to lose the Iraq war because it saw that as an avenue to being elected.
I fear this won’t be Americorps on steroids so much as ACORN on steroids.
I’d feel much better if there was a “volunteer for military service” option.
You never never never actually need a gun, until you need a gun, and then nothing else will do.
The employee free choice act sounded neat too! nt

I have significant problems with this.
Flagstaff (Diary) Sunday, March 22nd at 3:43PM EST (link)How much is truly voluntary? Are there provisions to force people to “volunteer”?
A massively expanded VISTA or Americorps or anything like that could end up creating a two-sided populace–those who “volunteered,” and those who were “selfish” and did things like go to college or go to work or even go on church missions.
With an out-of-control budget, why are we doing ANYTHING new that will add more expense?
A quote from Michael Shreuer: We are suffering under a “tyranny of incompetence.”
Be prepared for not the Americorps, but the Carter Years on steroids.
“The press is so powerful in its image-making role that it can make a criminal look like he’s the victim and make the victim look like he’s the criminal. If you aren’t careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.”– Malcolm X, Audubon Ballroom, December 13, 1964
I believe it is purposely cryptic Streiff
Doc Holliday (Diary) Sunday, March 22nd at 11:26PM EST (link)then they can tell us what it is really about AFTER the vote. Also, and more important imo is that they are just trying to set precedent. Once we accept the idea of some Federal civilian force and education “re-education” camps the camel wil have his nose under the tent.
It is very important that we focus not always on the details of a new law, but the precedent it sets for increasing federal power over our lives. For example, some think we saw this weak taxes go up even further on tobacco and some bad guys won’t get huge bonuses. What we really saw was the precedent that the feds can shake down any group they want and use taxation as a weapon against their domestic enemies.

larueladue (Diary) Thursday, March 19th at 1:56PM EST (link)I cannot make head nor tail out of the text of this… But what I can understand looks bad…
I knew it was coming.
Steph C (Diary) Friday, March 20th at 7:38AM EST (link)I suppose he’s moving fast because the house of cards is tumbling faster than he can spit out the marxist policies.
Where will we send our children to escape these indoctrination camps? It’s not like going to Canada to escape the draft because they’ll get the same indoctrination there.

Hillbilly Politics
I can't get confirmation if service will be required
Return to Revolution (Diary) Friday, March 20th at 8:38AM EST (link)Like larueladue noted, the actual bill is pretty incomprehensible (and I thought differential equations was difficult).
I suspect the reality will be quasi-requirement. That is, to say “volunteer or go to jail” will cause a huge uproar – so there will be “incentives” to volunteer. Which means that not volunteering will result in financial or some other type of hardship.

Socialists are very bad at thinking of unintended consequences.
paulincolo (Diary) Friday, March 20th at 1:01PM EST (link)I think the ultimate reason that they didn’t go through with the fairness doctrine was because they finally realized that pbs, msnbc, etc., would eventually fall under the doctrine once conservatives said “go ahead, I dare ya”. So they have decided to do it administratively through bureaucracy.
What the libs/socialists don’t get is in RED STATES, and/or under a future repub controlled administration or congress; it allows us to co-opt and undermine their school indoctrination. Conservatives can get appointed to run the GIVE program in which to promote patriotism, traditional values, etc.
By the way, it will be serve or no govt financial aid for schooling.

farstar99 (Diary) Friday, March 20th at 3:26PM EST (link)Just the rebellion at the state level, with two dozen state legislatures trying to reassert their rights, shows that the Demoncrats have stirred a hornets’ nest.
I am a little disappointed in the results, though. There was a big flourish, with positive results, about a month ago, but I haven’t heard more since.
In Montana, though, I’m proud to say we’ve struck a blow both for the real America and for the Second Amendment.
The Supreme Court, or should I say Obama’s Supplicant Court, once packed, will no doubt violate the Constitution and Bill of Rights, but for the present, it’s a victory.
unintended consequences
Common_Cents (Diary) Friday, March 20th at 5:48PM EST (link)The reason the left gets so screwed up is their basic assumption that the ends justify the means. This leads them to shoot from the hip to artificially product a result, most of the time discriminating against one group in favor of another and having unintended consequences.
I see the fundamental difference between lib and con is lib is ends justify the means and cons believe in setting fair rules and let everyone be responsible for their own outcome.
