Put The Blame On Santa Claus

The Copenhagen Climate Summit imploded on its second day over the lethal ‘Danish text” leak of the draft agreement, which further empowers First World nations over the developing and undeveloped nations, sidelines the UN and dumps the Kyoto Protocol. As the screaming developing nations let off CO2 like weenies on a grill amidst all the limos and private jets of the attendees, the Northern hemisphere is gripped in Winter’s snowy embrace while it is still Fall. Global warming is dead and it’s too late to switch back to the Global Cooling of the ‘70s. The only control freak Globalist thing left on their humanity hating agenda is Climate Change with which to bludgeon us into shivering serfs.

The Summit started off with the usual political correct nonsense of Christmas trees being banned since it is a socialist rich, post Christian environment where nothing as crass as trees sacrificed for bourgeoisie sentimentality is allowed. To paraphrase C. S. Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, in the bizarro world of the socialist, it’s always Winter and never Christmas.

On the national level, the cultural obliteration of Christmas and its traditions proceeds apace with the First Family sending out Seasons Greetings’ cards, which makes one wonder about the contents of their spice cabinet. Then Frosty the Snowman has gone adult with risqué sexual content over at CBS. So…are Frosty’s snow gal pals frigid? The ubiquitous and smarmy “Happy Holidays” is enough to make one ralf, so anxious is it not to offend anyone’s exquisite cultural and religious feelings. Why can’t the politically correct just snarl, “Bah! Humbug!” and let everyone know how they really feel about Christmas instead?

This has been pointed out before but needs to be asked again: Weren’t these politically correct, elitist slobs at one point children? And didn’t they enjoy Christmas as much as the next person?

What happened to them? Did they go mental or something when they found out that Santa and his reindeer sleigh were part of the sweet mythology of Christmas?

BUT and here’s the REAL secret of Santa: Once you know about Santa, you then BECOME Santa yourself when it comes to gift giving. When a child is old enough to learn about Santa, it is time for them to go from, “Me-me-me! It’s all about me!” to, “What would Mommy and Daddy and Sissy like for Christmas? Do I have enough saved up to surprise them on Christmas? ”

Quite frankly, if children learned THAT lesson about Santa and budgeting for Christmas, there’d be a lot less bitter, socialists/atheists in this world. They’d learn that it is more blessed to voluntarily give than to receive, they would think of others first and they would learn self-discipline rather than immediate, selfish gratification. (Yes, I know a spoiled brat of a child that went from being nominally Christian to atheist because, to them, if Santa didn’t exist then God didn’t exist!)

Getting back to the scarcity of Christmas trees at The Copenhagen Climate Summit, we just got our tree from only one of two (count ‘em, two) Christmas tree lots in an entire 25 mile radius! When the attendant was asked why there weren’t more tree lots, she replied that the environmentalists had convinced city officials not to grant permits for tree lots plus the Forest Service was not allowing as much culling of pines this year. National forests are where most tree sellers here in Arizona get their stock!

My reaction? I blurted out, “#*^& those stupid environmentalists!” and the tree lot attendant, a woman in her late ’60s, started laughing in agreement then handed us extra candy canes from sheer and conspiratorial good will. So a 2009 Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night. Extra snaps to you if you get a clerk in a corporate store to wish you “Merry Christmas” right back.

Apocalypso !

Kenny Solomon (Diary) Wednesday, December 9th at 9:31PM EST (link)

Santa Claus is drinking beer, trying not to worry,
Hearing things he doesn’t want to hear,
‘Cause he’s in a hurry to say goodbye,
Say goodbye.

Santa Claus is drinking gin, trying not to worry,
Stops himself from listening in, ’cause he’s in a hurry to say goodbye,
Say goodbye.

Apocalypso – its a special dance,
Apocalypso – tell me why they’re trying to wipe the smile off Santa’s face……

White sheets and bright lights in the sky, shining through his window,
Santa Claus is wondering why there’s nothing on his radio – it must be time,
To say goodbye.

There’s more to it – A great track from one of the top bands of the 1980′s.

Cheers !

Quite a shotgun blast, Ann

I live in the SF Bay area and your profile indicates you do too. You must live in a strange neighborhood. In mine, there are Christmas tree lots in every supermarket square in our town.

There’s also the option to go out to Half Moon Bay or many huge Christmas tree farms along the coast and cut your own. (When our kids were younger we used to do that.) Most the people in our neighborhood continue to put up lights and displays. San Jose has a huge Christmas display every year (I recommend you take your kids to see it.)

I don’t see nor care about a perceived assault on Christmas trees or Santa or Frosty. The REAL assault is on the celebration of the birth of Jesus. You didn’t mention Jesus, the one this holiday is about, even once in your post. The birth of Christ is the reason our family celebrates Christmas.

I would respectfully ask you not to use our Lord’s holiday to make what seems to be an environmental statement on the availability of trees or on the demise of Santa and Frosty. While cultural things, those are not Christian things.

Merry Christmas to you and your family and if you want info on good tree lots or Christmas displays, let me know. .

It looks like Anne didn't update her profile

civil truth (Diary) Thursday, December 10th at 12:41PM EST (link)

If I recall, Ann used to live in the Bay Area, but I recall her writing a few months back that she was moving. Looks like from this article she ended up in Arizona. So points off to both parties: LibRick missed the Arizona reference, and Ann needs to update her profile,

I retract and apologize to Ann with regard to my statements on the Bay Area Christmas experience.

Merry Christmas to you too, LibRick

But I haven’t really shifted gears yet – it’s still two weeks away. Maybe when I usher the Revels tomorrow evening I’ll start to acclimate. But I suspect I won’t really start to clue in until the 20th.

I'm with you mostly here, LibRick

I agree that Christmas is primarily about the message of God’s incarnation and coming to earth to dwell among us (Emanuel).

However, I have mellowed some over the our cultural expressions (but not mellowed over commercialism) because
1) People are having fun, and I wouldn’t want to take that from them;
2) People are moved to be more generous and caring of their neighbors, and that is good;
3) People who otherwise wouldn’t have a clue of the Gospel see all the hooplah and wonder what the fuss is about some baby, and that questioning becomes a vehicle for learning about the Christmas story, and even stirring up a longing in their hearts.

So God redeems even the frivolous and irreverent at times.

(That said, I also agree that Ann’s Christmas tree schtick was totally off target.)

Agree.

mschmitt (Diary) Thursday, December 10th at 1:00PM EST (link)

Trees, Snowmen, Santa Claus, etc.: all cultural artifacts with minimal (if any) actual religious significance. Culture (of course) is still very important, but shouldn’t be conflated so as to be equivalent to the celebration of the birth of Christ itself.

(That being said, if the hippies are actually preventing people from enjoying their cultural/religious traditions, then I can go along with some hippie punching.)

I"m with you on this

LibRick (Diary) Thursday, December 10th at 1:09PM EST (link)

Even though many decry the commercialization of Christmas, it does make it fun and I agree that it creates a learning experience.

My problem is the systematic removal of any religious reference to Christtmas and not trees etc.

At this time of year, cities should give space to Christians, Moslems, Jews, Buddhists, etc to put up displays on city property. It does not hurt anyone and does not foece any particular view on anyone.

Call me selfish but I miss those nativity scenes and carols that referenced Jesus.

Exactly right, LibRick

civil truth (Diary) Thursday, December 10th at 1:26PM EST (link)

The selective removal of religious content from the public square vitiates the whole point of public celebration by removing the bridge to knowledge of the Christmas story.

Those nativity scenes and carol are mostly what promotes the question: Who is the Child?

The intent of the Establishment clause was not to sterilize the public arena of religious expression, but rather to prevent a government imprimatur on one particular form of it.

Your rant on Christmas trees is an uncharacteristic lapse

civil truth (Diary) Thursday, December 10th at 1:01PM EST (link)

Sorry Ann, but your tone here is that a Christmas tree is entitlement – and then you compound that lapse with a whine about environmentalists in the Park Service limiting tree cutting in National Forests – as though the trees in our National Forest are there just for people to cut down for Christmas trees and don’t serve any other purpose.

Relocation to a much drier climate has its consequences, and one is that trees may not be quite as available as in the Bay Area.

Nicholas, the Christian saint...

proudmarinemom (Diary) Thursday, December 10th at 1:12PM EST (link)

I know some Christians who are actually offended that the legend of “Santa Claus” or “Saint Nick” is often a focus of the celebration at Christmastime, but I cannot see why.

The wonderful story of the man who started the tradition of secret gift-giving as part of the celebration of Christ’s birth doesn’t have to be banished along with Strip-club Frosty the Snow Man. Children can be taught the true meaning of the season without having to sacrifice the glorious joy of seeing presents magically appear. (I do like your point, Ann, that children who “know” become more generous and enjoy being in on the secret.)

I still get gastric butterflies on Christmas Eve, not in anticipation of receiving anything, but in memory of those magical Christmases Past when nobody even thought to question the holiness of Good Saint Nick.

Merry Christmas to all and I updated my profile.
