I Suspect Something Sinister Behind Judd Gregg Being Commerce Secretary

According to various media outlets, New Hampshire Republican Senator Judd Gregg is in the running for Commerce Secretary.  If this is true, I certainly hope the Obama administration has decided to do the proper vetting and make sure Gregg is current on his taxes, or isn’t under some sort of criminal investigation, or isn’t a lobbyist.

Gregg was a businessman in Nashua before being getting into politics, and he’s been the chairmen and is currently the ranking member on the Senate budget committee.  He’s qualified )and I think moreso than Bill Richardson was) to head up Commerce.  However, President Obama has backed out on having bipartisanship in his cabinet, with his only claim to doing so being Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.  Coincidentally, Gates isn’t even registered as a Republican.  With Commerce being open, Obama would actually be smart to appoint Gregg, but Gregg accepting the position could prove disastrous.

If Gregg is offered the position, accepts the position, and is confirmed, then that means that New Hampshire’s Governor, Democrat John Lynch, would have to appoint a replacement.  And being a Democrat, I hardly doubt Lynch would appoint a Republican to the seat.  What’s important is that after Al Franken is successful in stealing the Minnesota seat from Norm Coleman, and with Gregg in the cabinet, Lynch’s appointment would mean 60 Democrat senators, and hence the Republicans couldn’t even muster the numbers for a fillibuster.

President Obama may have fooled the majority of Americans into having them believe he’s some sort of religious icon, he can fix the economy after being sworn in, and he can restore our nation’s image by weakening our national security.  He’s already lied about public financing, his radical associations, being open and transparent, appointing Republicans to his cabinet, being bipartisan in the porkulus bill, and not having lobbyists in his administration.  What’s one more lie to the American people to make them believe he’s trying to bring the country together, although his agenda is to get his Democratic party more power so he can get anything he wants rammed through Congress with little to no opposition.

Anyone else find this as a coincidence since all House Republicans opposed the “stimulus” bill and it appears that most Senate Republicans (even though I’m sure the RINO’s like Graham, Snowe, Collins, and Hatch will latch their lips on Obama’s rear) oppose the bill as well?  This is a move not to bring the country together, but rather to tilt the scales so far in his favor that he can do whatever he wants.

The sad thing is the man who could potentially be caught in the middle, Senator Gregg.  I’m confident he can run Commerce effectively, but you know that he knows his decision would give Obama so much power he would have to consider turning it down.

Look, this may pass and Gregg might not even get approached about it.  But if this happens, we need to be responsible about letting the American people know what the true motive is behind this.

The Dept of Commerce should never have been created and should have been eliminated by Newt

Commerce, at least, was explicitly laid out as a federal concern in the Constitution.

The same cannot be said for Energy, HUD, H&HS, Education, etc.

IOW, if we’re getting rid of Cabinet posts, Commerce should be *way* down our list to eliminate.

Just Say No

reddog53 (Diary) Saturday, January 31st at 8:06AM EST (link)

I agree that the offer from the President is based more on the Senate makeup than any particular talent of Senator Gregg’s. In fact, I emailed him a note to tell him that… if enough RS folks contact him, maybe he can summon the courage to say no. I love the idea of telling the President to abolish the agency!

You convinced me. I thought about emailing him

And Robert Gates said he considers himself a Republican. Obama’s bipartisan cabinet is real. Whether or not you think that’s a good thing is another matter.

The reason we forget LaHood is because he's a

member of the Republican Main Street Project and one of only three R’s who didn’t vote for the Contract With America. His former boss was Bob Michel, who was one of the worst minority leaders possible.

So, you know, you can have him. Hiring him to the Obama Administration doesn’t exactly constitute bipartisan, it’s more of a logical progression in the man’s career of being a total squish.

I am pleased that President Obama has retained Secretary Gates

The most important part of President Obama’s job is that he keep America safe; keeping Secretary Gates was a good move.

however, isn’t the course of action the country will take ultimately up to Obama? Gates can talk his ear off about something, but the final call is Obama’s.
I’m confident Gates can do what is right, but Obama was elected thanks to the CodePink/MoveOn surrender movement. Since Obama is a special interest and “you scratch my back I’ll scratch yours” Chicago crook politician, I hardly doubt he has the best interest for our national security in mind. Look what he’s already doing with Gitmo.

No to Gregg for Commerce.

A possible silver lining if Gregg jumps: the GOP is 100% off the hook

smagar (Diary) Sunday, February 1st at 9:18AM EST (link)

Democrats are sure to complain that any bad bills are partly the Republican’s fault because we didn’t stop them with our filibuster.

That’s an absurd argument, but much of America is ignorant enough about our government that they might buy it. And, while the compliant MSM won’t go so far as to actively help the Dems sell this bill of goods to the American people—because I think today’s MSM doesnt want history to describe them as the 21st century collective version of Walter Duranty—they won’t challenge it too much. An assertion unchallenged is an assertion believed.

BUT BUT…if Gregg jumps and we are left with 40 Senators..no filibuster. Barack owns its ALL.

Food for thought…

Not much of a silver lining

A filibuster proof Senate would give them a green light to implement all of their socialist policies without a reasonable word in opposition. I’d rather have at least the ability to slow down tyranny than to be able to deny involvement after the fact.

This is all about the make-up of the Senate, period.

jonreagan (Diary) Saturday, January 31st at 3:17PM EST (link)

Wtih all due respect to the diarist, I don’t just “suspect” something sinister; this move is fairly blatant, having nothing to do with finding a good Secretary of Commerce. Obama wants to completely eliminate the chance of successful filibusters in the Senate, period.

The larger question is that given the stakes involved—i.e., losing the last real chance that conservatives have to block a massive expansion of government–why is Senator Gregg even considering this? Selling out for thirty pieces of silver—or in this case, the stature of a Cabinet position, good travel perks, etc.–would be the ultimate knife in the back to a Republican party which has supported his political career.

In the meantime, it was about at a similar point in the early days of the Clinton administration that Richard Shelby—realizing that what the President was offering was not what he had advertised as a candidate–changed parties and became a Republican. It was obviously a principled move, and shows that not everyone just HAS to be in the majority (yeah, like you, Joe Lieberman). Makes you wonder if we could pick off a member from the other side of the aisle–Ben Nelson, Mark Pryor, or some other right-of-center Senator.

Democrats can keep Ben Nelson......

andysmith (Diary) Sunday, February 1st at 10:39AM EST (link)

Nelson may be right of center on social issues, but that’s it. We all found out in 2006 he LOVES earmarks, loves to spend, and loves to funnel money to his son’s company and all thinks it’s A-okay. Plus, he loves to lick his finger and hold it up to the wind before he votes.
We already have quite a few of those in the Senate Republicans. Graham, Hatch, Snowe, Collins, and Nebraska personally just got rid of one in Chuck Hagel. Trust me, the vast majority of Nebraska Republicans wouldn’t welcome Ben Nelson with open arms.

OF COURSE! The governor of NH is a Democrat! Go figure! If this Senator is a power hungry professional, political parasite, as most are, he will accept because, he does NOT give a rat’s @$$ about anything except his power!

His acceptance, will, of course, eliminate a filibuster in the Senate! Why do you think Minority Leader McConnell was giving him the fish eye?

Gates was kept at Defense because BO doesn’t know anybody to pick in his place.

I don’t know if Judd Gregg is worth anything as a Republican Senator, but I do know his presence gives us one fewer committed Democrat to contend with.

He should disrespectfully decline the invitation. Then he won’t have to pay back taxes, as well.
