Twenty-Four

No, not that 24.

It’s my birthday today. I’m 24! It’s a pretty useless age…luckily I have presents and cake to fill the void left by my inability to rent a car without signing my soul away.

Anyway, I’m feeling nostalgic and contemplative. Looking back, it’s interesting to see where I’ve been and where I’m going. I went to a fairly conservative Big Ten university, but surrounded myself with enough liberal friends to send Rush Limbaugh into spasms; I started out as an engineer, but moved on to political science because I realized that while I would have made a good engineer, I will make a GREAT lawyer. Now I’m moving on to yet another Big Ten school, where I’ll battle my way though a decidedly “moderate” (we’ll see) program and emerge, hopefully unscathed, with two graduate degrees. Not bad for a girl from a 3000 population town in flyover country, right?

It’s amazing to me that I never jumped ship from conservatism into the murky waters of modern liberalism and the “progressive” agenda. It certainly would have made my life a heck of a lot easier: I’ve spent more than my fair share of time battling my way through idiotic debates with “progressives” who wouldn’t know good policy if it walked up and gave them a healthy smack on the rear—which, in hindsight, is probably in itself the reason I never took the plunge. I delight in the ridiculous, but put stock in things that actually make sense. But what about everyone else?

By “everyone else,” I mean the thousands of people in my generation who stood up, lent an ear to, and drank the kool-aid of one of the most liberal Presidential candidates in galactic history. I went through the entire election season, from primaries to election night, being alternately baffled and dismayed at their reactions; at first I couldn’t see how this rookie senator hailing from the most corrupt political machine in the country could take an election from a seasoned senator and decorated war hero. Later on though, when it was all said and done, I began to see how party politics, coupled with the seductive cult of personality (and a healthy dose of irrational emotion) led to the complete dismantling of the GOP and ultimately the election of Barack Obama. Now, many are asking not only “What’s next for the GOP?” but “What’s next for the youth of America?” This past election proved that reaching the younger demographic is crucial to winning an election.

The GOP has found itself in a very interesting situation. In theory, this would be a great time to stand up, brush off the dirt and prove to Obama’s young, liberal support base that the GOP may be down, but it’s certainly not out. However, out of all the e-mails, tweets, blogs, and websites I see every day, I’m not seeing much to contradict my theory that the GOP, as a whole, does not “get” my generation, never mind the scores of young liberals fawning at the feet of Barack Obama. I want this to change, not only because it’s embarrassing to watch our current leaders trying to be down with the hip hop culture, or whatever it is they’re trying to do, but because I want to be able to identify with the greatest party in this country! Rather than orchestrating a drive-by flaming of the leadership, I decided to just put a few ideas out there, in hopes that somebody might read it and turn things around.

The Hardliners vs. the T-Shirt Collectors
From my experience, young “liberals” (and run of the mill young politicos, for that matter) can be broken down into two separate and unequal categories: the liberals who actually believe what they say, and the “liberals” who show up at rallies for the complimentary ham sandwich and Frisbee. (There is, of course, a third category consisting of those shining bastions of promise that couldn’t care less about politics, this country, or their future, but I’m going to ignore them because I find them annoying and generally worthless. Let’s concentrate on the ones worth working with, shall we?) The hardliners are not your target audience; while they may not have all the answers themselves, they honestly believe that a “progressive” path is indeed the wave of the future, and anyone who disagrees with them is an obstructionist. They have their own sets of facts and figures, and can generally prove that they have the capacity to read a book and form coherent thoughts. This viewpoint is not, in its purest form, as hostile as you may like to believe; however, people who follow this line of reasoning are the ones who, after a mere 15 minutes of conversation, make you feel like you’ve just drilled your head through a cinder block wall. They believe what they believe, and to hell with the man, woman, or child who dares to question their good intentions. They mean well, so get out of their way!

We need to focus our attention on the other category: the “t-shirt collectors.” These people usually have a generally progressive point of view, but their political moxie comes less from established personal doctrine and more from passing political trends and hot-button issues like abortion or gay marriage. The doctrine of “why can’t we all just get along,” as well as the doctrine of “hey, have some free stuff!” rings clear with this group of liberals, and that is what makes it particularly difficult to win them over. Converting the squish takes time, patience, conviction, and above all, a game plan. Engage these people–listen to what they have to say, and tailor your message to them. Drive-by politics may work for the left, but it certainly will never work for a party that’s already flailing, and can’t afford another big loss.

The Party of ‘O’ and the Cult of Sparkling Personality

Listening to a young liberal compare Democrats to Republicans is like hearing a historian compare Mother Theresa with Attila the Hun. On one hand, you’ve got the hardworking dreamer with a heart of gold; on the other, you’ve got a bloodthirsty criminal hell-bent on world domination. There is no middle ground, no common mission, no chance of reconciliation.

The Democrat Party has evolved into a personality cult. Don’t believe me? Consider their figurehead! Consider their high-profile supporters! Joe the Plumber cannot compare with Brangelina and Jessica Alba. In the eyes of the world, the GOP is the creepy redneck next door who invites you over to help skin rabbits and clean shotguns; meanwhile, the Democrat Party is that guy—the one who knows a guy who can get you what you want. The Democrat Party spends its time at posh clubs flirting with movie stars, and we’re the squares who sit at home doing nerd things like weaving American flags and whittling miniature Revolutionary War-era battle cannons out of single blocks of wood. It may not be the truth, but it’s the prevailing stereotype.

Stop for a moment and, in as objective a manner as possible, consider the rise of Barack Obama. (I know it’s hard, but so is life, so man up.) This guy came from out in left field somewhere, kissed a few babies, and ended up slithering right into the Oval Office. He didn’t do that by demonstrating unparalleled knowledge in economics and foreign policy. Oh no, he did that by rolling up his sleeves, immersing himself in pop culture, and making crass jokes about conservatism—all while creating a kind of mystique about himself. As much as you may dislike him, Barack Obama has it. He has that thing that makes people want him; he’s a rockstar, only instead of wearing leather pants, he wears Italian suits and silk ties. It’s that thing that allows him to pass off sloppy rhetoric as healthy domestic policy, and cruel ideology as rationality. By way of Barack Obama, the Left has deftly and brilliantly separated politics from personality, guaranteeing their candidates a free pass when things go wrong.

The only way to outwit the Left on this one is to create a cohesive personality for the GOP and conservatism as a whole. The Left has “change,” but we as conservatives are guided by our faith in life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness! A figurehead, someone we can rally around, will come in time; but for now, it is crucial that we reestablish ourselves as a party of ideals rooted in hundreds of years of history. Drive those tent stakes deep, because the left will do their best to ruffle any and all efforts to create a cohesive conservative image.

The Mess We’ve Made

Conservatives stand for individual freedom and individual rights that do not infringe on the individual rights of others. That’s why they are defined the way they are. The paternal/maternal government approach of Democrats and Socialists sounds awfully nice but it’s like living in your parents’ house your whole life. The more able you are to take care of yourself, the more you will resent having to live by your parents’ rules. Some day we all need to learn to accept responsibility for ourselves and our acts. Democrats believe that day should be put off as long as possible, or the government should take care of all adult decisions while letting the people stay like children their whole lives. Republicans believe that the day of emancipation from parents should happen as soon as possible, because history tells us that’s how people can be happiest with their lives.
~LJ “Beaglescout” Miller

Before I began to write this diary, I asked a few friends what they thought the GOP’s biggest problems were when attempting to relate to the young Americans, particularly young Liberals. Time and again, cultural relevance hit the list. This is the biggie, and it will make or break every campaign from here to eternity. Like it or not, America has evolved into a society of Facebooking , Tweeting, cell phone-clutching culture junkies, and the Democrats are leaps and bounds ahead of the GOP as far as harnessing those venues is concerned. We’ve come a long way since November, but we still have a long way to go. Looking beyond the internet, the GOP has got to sit down and revamp their most basic approach to winning the younger demographic. For example: If you’re trying to reach post-retirement Americans, do you target them with a bright, flashy ad complete with driving beats and the latest cultural icon? Or, do you put together something vaguely nostalgic, with soft music and lots of stuff about traditional values? The answer is obvious. The same logic works for ads targeting younger generations. It is completely possible to bend your platform to cater to different groups of people without compromising its message; all you have to do is get down in the trenches and open your eyes to who people are, what they want, and what they need in order to understand and accept what you have to offer.

PAY ATTENTION.
No earmuffs, blinders, or hasty assumptions allowed.

It’s time to stop reacting, and start defining the narrative with conservatism in the forefront. Quit with the apologizing, belt up, and dare someone to label you a racist, misogynistic homophobe for what you believe. Furthermore, stop caring so much about what people think! You know you’re not a racist, misogynistic homophobe, so who the hell cares if some off-his-rocker liberal calls you one? Take it as a compliment—you’ve struck a nerve! The one thing I’ve noticed lately from young liberals is that their main problem with the GOP isn’t conservatism itself, but that the Party is generally confused about its platform, and as a whole refuses to defend itself. The bottom line is, nobody likes a waffling pansy; and at this particular juncture, in the eyes of young America, the GOP has been reduced to a bunch of pandering, waffling pansies with no direction or end game. The progressives in the party are making true conservatives look like gun-waving yahoos; conversely, us gun waving yahoos are making the progressives look like traitorous cowards. Stick a couple of cameras around the state house, and we’ve got a ready-made reality show!

There is a fine line between appealing to the young Left, and succumbing to its dark side; walking (just to the right, of course) that fine line is the key to reaching out without giving up ground. When the GOP finally speaks to young America, compromising values and making concessions will have nothing to do with its success. Proactive and confident conservatism, cultural awareness, and modernity of message, however, will have everything to do with it. Remember, back in September and October, when John McCain would end just about every speech he made with something along the lines of “STAND UP! Stand up and fight for your country! Stand up”? Well, do just that. Stand up and remember what it means to be a conservative. Take time to develop an even deeper appreciation for personal freedom, individualism, perseverance, pride, and responsibility. Then take that message, polish it up, and instead of harking back to the past for anecdotes and examples of conservatism in action, apply it to the here and now. Learn from the past, but live your message 100% in the present.

Toward the beginning of this year, I had a life-changing conversation with a liberal friend. We talked about everything: life, love, work, politics, religion…you name it. He told me he felt frustrated with the so-called stagnant nature of conservatism, and went on to basically flame all conservatives for being maniacal hypocrites. I said to him, “But I’m a conservative. Do you feel this way about me?” He responded that he didn’t, and when I asked why, he said to me, “Because you’re…different. You…listen. I know exactly what you believe, but you don’t make me feel bad about what I believe. I learn something new every time I talk to you.”

In substance, it wasn’t much, but as far as potential is concerned, I got one hell of a start that night. The door was still shut, but I found a cracked window, and worked with what I had. If it wants to succeed, the GOP will do the same. Don’t expect instant gratification—you’ll only be disappointed. But the people of my generation crave information, and eventually they’ll find out that the man they elected might not have all of the answers they’re looking for. When that happens, we as conservatives need to be ready to listen, reach out, and teach—rather than resorting to spewing off talking points before running off to the next high-value demographic.

Young people in America are an interesting breed. I’m one of them, and I still laugh every once in a while at the ridiculousness that is (occasionally) my life. We may have an affinity for cheap beer and Jell-O shots, college sports and ridiculous internet memes, tattoos and fast cars, but don’t think for a minute that we’re anything less than a force to be reckoned with. Like it or not, we’re important. We’re here—on your lawn, if you will—and we’re not going anywhere!

Not only will you make a superlative attorney, Amy, but you

janis (Diary) Friday, June 5th at 12:27PM EST (link)

should be a stellar voice on the Right for many years to come! Like you, I think that the youth of America will be receptive to the message of conservatism if the right person is advocating it. And the ones who SHOULD be advocating it as they keep saying that they are conservative tend to be exactly the ones who don’t practice what they preach.

I well remember the wave of enthusiasm that John F. Kennedy ignited in the younger generation when he said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” And Reagan as well was able to do the same thing. Sarah Palin is the closest thing we have these days. How do your compatriots view her, Amy?

Thanks, Janis :o)

Amy Miller (Diary) Friday, June 5th at 2:27PM EST (link)

I plan on keeping up with this through grad school and beyond! I plan on giving our deal leaders in congress a wake up call someday :o )

Oh, Sarah Palin. The dark horse of all political debates. As far as her reputation with the puppies (thanks, EPU) is concerned, I think it comes down to a mix of “irrelevant” and “stupid”. From what I saw, Palin never had a chance with the 18-24 demographic, because all the news mediums focused on the guns, the country living, and her daughter’s pregnancy. I honestly blame the pseudo-media: Jon Stewart, Colbert, and the drive by politics of the internet. Even my conservative friends didn’t like her…but they never named policy as a reason! Personally, I loved Sarah–I differed with her in some areas of policy, but what I really liked was that she was so normal. I felt like I could relate to her, even if I disagreed with her.

Thanks for the thoughtful response, Amy. I had assumed

janis (Diary) Friday, June 5th at 3:09PM EST (link)

that your age cohort wouldn’t be in favor of Sarah Palin, so that ‘s no surprise. It’s funny, you know, that she should be a natural to appeal to young women in particular given that she has gone as far as she has without being from a rich family or without putting career ambition over family. She’s no Meghan McCain, that’s for sure!

It is my hope that Governor Palin can overcome the ignorance and bias that the media has foisted upon her and remain a viable candidate for higher office.

I hope so too, Janis

Amy Miller (Diary) Friday, June 5th at 9:40PM EST (link)

But the thing about Sarah Palin is that she has no cult appeal. She has no sleaze, or trendy scandal; no pot in the office or male strippers in the basement. From what I can tell, she’s a strong woman and a decent human being.

Who wants that?

… and I didn’t see the male stripper-sleaze appeal. He always tried to project a cool, detached demeanor, even though we were screaming about Ayers, redistribution, Wright, re-making America, etc.

I think Sarah may surprise many young people. (BTW, I was 24 in ’84, and I was totally behind Reagan, even further back, in 1980, at 20).

Keep up the good fight!

That’s just the thing…people who willfully remain ignorant of actual policy, etc. STILL VOTE! It’s infuriating…they vote for the cool guy with no answers because they CAN. (Yes they can! Yes they can! Ugh.)

Something I didn’t really hit on, but remains important, is that my generation is the generation of ME. We are empowered, but instead of getting all the facts, many people stick with the facts that are trendy and sound good, rather than recognizing hard truths.

Welcome to the Amy-world, lol.

It's been 35 years since I turned 24 and

Achance (Diary) Friday, June 5th at 12:44PM EST (link)

that was also the year I let slip the surly bonds of The South and moved wife, kid, and dog to Alaska. It was a time of gas lines, and nuclear stare downs between the US and USSR over Isreal, and of a National malaise before Carter called it that; a lingering feeling that in the wake of Vietnam, Watergate, the Oil Embargo, and crime and violence everywhere, that America’s best days were behind us. In fact, most of us entering adult life at that time were already being told that America had never had any “best days” as the curriculum was beginning its evolution to the new 3Rs: Racism, Recycling, and Reproduction. There was definitely a fin d’siecle feel to things and, half a hippie, I was basically running off into the woods by going as far away from it all as I could imagine.

Well, it’s been a great 35 years but once again, there is that fin d’siecle feel to things and this time it is much more ominous because the bad feelings come from within the Country. I’d like to extend this conversation with you 35 years from now but I suspect even in the world of hopey-changey, I ain’t making 95. But hopefully, the People will regain their senses and find new leadership to restore America because I’d hate to think my 35 years were merely our brief, shining moment.

In Vino Veritas

I'd like that too!

Amy Miller (Diary) Friday, June 5th at 2:41PM EST (link)

Regaining senses is half the battle. I’m afraid it’s going to take a major disaster (fiscal, social, mushroom cloud) for lefties (esp. young lefties) in this country to stop acting on emotion and desire and start getting serious. Emotion has nothing to do with a solid decision, but my generation is being encouraged to disregard the law, crap on the Constitution, and act based on “what’s right”. It’s disgusting! I hate it and reject it, but most people just treat me like I’m crazy because of it.

Not that I care…

molybdanthan (Diary) Friday, June 5th at 7:06PM EST (link)

We need a massive counter weight to the multi-trillion dollar propaganda empire that’s pervading the country. When I think of all the covert Lib theology appearing in kid’s shows, it makes me sick. The fanatical actors, and musicians towing the Lib line. That’s made a generation of ideologues who have no idea.

Hopefully it won’t take a major disaster to wake them up. But I wouldn’t be surprised if most just hit snooze and went back to sleep.

In the last example you gave with your friend I found something interesting. You said that you generation craves information, you then said that some will come to realize the Obama doesn’t have all the answers. In that statement I think you hit on a huge distinction. Those who seek information can be won over, those who are seek answers are probably less open minded or else they would have the will to provide their own answers if given free access to the information.

Just a thought.

You said it better than I could have. The difference between “answers” (“solutions”, Hillary?) and “information” is crucial. I feel like so many people my age disregard anything that can’t be had by way of an iPhone. It’s so stupid. There are a great many of us out there that DO seek information and treat it with discretion, but the reason that drive-by liberalism works so well on my age group is that it’s venue is generally a “want it, got it right away” medium. People who just look for answers are generally looking for an easy fix, and that’s what Obama offers. People who seek information, on the other hand, enable themselves to question, debate, and form their own opinions.

There was a giant spike on Nov. 4 for the search phrase “who should I vote for”. Yes, the day of. People were deciding who they were going to vote for that day. Basically, as Amy said, looking for an answer, not for information to make a rational decision.

I would pull up a report on “who is running for president” for the same day, but frankly, I don’t think my heart could handle it.

And it breaks my heart.

The thing about tearing down stereotypes is that there’s always one more stereotype in the making, one more hateful idiot making things worse. The only thing I’ve found that really works is to live the ideology to the hilt, and bring out the big guns when some Kos twit with a listening problem whips out the libtard talking points.

describes my daughter to a T. You said something to the affect that things will have to get real bad before there can be a culture shift, because it’s too cool and hip right now to be a Republican/conservative hater.

My daughter has no political idiology. And, when I can pin her down, she’s not that far left of me. For example: she’s vehemently opposed to late term abortion. And she doesn’t support most government social programs.

With her it’s the greedy capiralist, rascist and war monger meme. Which, of course, she cannot support with anything resembling a factual or cogent arguement.

She’s a lefty because her friends at Nobu are lefties and it’s cool.

So, I’ll keep working on her and watch for the signs of enlightenment as our country goes down the tubes..

I had two kids at 24 and was on my way to living in VA….I was a liberal…shocking I know but I was and OBTW I was stupid and inconsiderate of people I didn’t care about the world the military the USA or anything I only cared about my life PERIOD. I am a 9-12 er and I will NEVER go back. I never thought about anyone or anything until 9-11 and now I care about everything. I care that Obama is killing our great country that Bush opened the door for him to do it that the GOP is feckless and unable to recognize that SMALL GOVERNMENT is the ONLY MANTRA that is the WINNING MANTRA. There is but one way to end this Democrat majority and that is to tell We The People that your state and your life is yours not the governments to run and that as Conservatives we will be giving it back to you where it truly belongs.

I believe that young people and I have two, one is 21 and the other 24 one has a liberal girlfriend who voted Obama because everyone else did and the others fiancee who will vote for the first time in the Governors race here in VA…..when I first talked to her she wanted to see Obama at a rally in her area of VA now when I talk to her she talks about saving the unborn, lower taxes and states rights :-) The liberal one is “scared” I am trying to change her but I tell her I cannot change her I can only tell her the truth! My older son is more Libertarian my younger son is extremely Conservative but they both say the same thing and that is their friends are READY to get the government out of every little area of their lives! of course they want to legalize pot also but hell that is getting the government out of your life.

The way to get back to the majority is through the thoughts and actions of the TEA Partiers it is just that fire for SMALL GOVERNMENT that will win but I don’t see too many Republicans in office standing up and shouting it from the rooftops and in such I don’t see that they want to win back the majority just that they want to keep their jobs!

And a high-five to my Jaded!

Amy Miller (Diary) Friday, June 5th at 2:57PM EST (link)

Stand up and fight, indeed! I’m a 9-12er and a Tea Partier as well, and I feel like that sort of activism is a major piece of the puzzle. Conservative activism CAN work, but it’s going to take a lot of hard work and a lot of branching out.

I’m ready for it!

This old dog wishes you a happy b-day and wants to expand on that quote with a story

Beaglescout (Diary) Friday, June 5th at 9:45PM EST (link)

At least I’m not more than twice your age any more, young pup.

After I graduated from the college my parents sent me to, moved back to their house, and tried my hand at a few dead-end jobs I realized I had to make a change to myself and my life. I was 23, just about the same age as you, Amy. It involved moving a long way away, to Philly, with no friends or family to support me, no place to stay past a couple of months, no money in my pocket, and no car. It was the first really important choice I made as an adult, independent of my parents’ input, and it was both reckless and romantic. But it all worked out. I found a job to help me pay off my loans, made friends, played in a rock and roll band, and over time became who I am now.

Now that I look back on those days I realize that when I decided to blindly jump out of the nest, that was the beginning of a journey from the shallow and unprincipled socialist ideas that we who were educated by unionized school teachers and went to progressive churches breathed, via the ignorant and self-consciously transgressive kneejerk social leftism of my rock and roll years, to the principle based classical liberalism of a husband and father who has faced divorce and managed to keep family and marriage together.

All those years spent chasing pleasure and grasping only disappointment. It was the choice to stop chasing pleasure, embrace my family’s needs, and consciously base my actions on principle, that brought happiness. But it was the choice to leave my parents’ house and risk total failure that started me on the trip.

Now imagine that I hadn’t been using my parents as a crutch but the government instead. What would I have had to do to get out of the nest if it was the size of the United States? Surely moving from the midwest to Philly wouldn’t have been far enough. Even Mississippi, where I am now, wouldn’t have been far enough.

In the future will other 23 and 24 year-olds be able to find a place that is free enough for them to make their own way and become adults? I like to repeat the example of Admiral David Farragut, who shipped out as a cabin boy in the US Navy at age 10 and commanded his first ship at age 12. Will future Americans be forced to live their whole lives in an extended childhood, even longer than the already extended childhood we now call adolescence? Or will there be an opportunity for 23,18, or even 12 year-olds to make actual adult choices for their own lives? Will there be freedom or confining restraints, arbitrary limits, nonsensical mandates? Will government be a guardian of the unalienable rights with which we were created, rights that preceded and justified government, or a nagging, interfering parent we can never escape?

Or if you have studied the history of the 20th century on your own and recognize certain awful patterns in developments of the last ten years, and especially the last six months, will our own government be a boot stepping on a face for a thousand years?

“A nation which can prefer disgrace to danger is prepared for a master, and deserves one.”

LJ, I learn something new every time you open your mouth.

Amy Miller (Diary) Friday, June 5th at 10:28PM EST (link)

I’m pretty sure that story will stick with me forever.

There is no such thing as striking out on your own nowadays. “Independence” as a verb is long gone, and instead of “individuality” we have “the common good.” The walls are closing in, here!

The thing is, if people really paid attention, and examined the repercussions of what’s happening, they’d be running screaming for the exits.

The book is called 'King, Warrior, Magician, Lover'

molybdanthan (Diary) Friday, June 5th at 11:00PM EST (link)

Written by Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette. In it, they say we’ve lost the ability to grow out of childhood because the new cultural apparatus has strangled the old ways. When we abandon the past, the future is in doubt.

The adult archetypes are innate to all men and women, but without activating them in the proper manner, they become stunted and malformed. The King becomes a high-chair tyrant/weakling, the warrior a sadist/masochist, etc.

That explains the ‘youth obsession’ you find in most Fascist cultures. Adults wanting more than anything to be children again. And since “every want is a weakness” they behave like children, act like them. Become children.

You’re right to point out how children once did truly incredible things, beyond getting the high score on Guitar Hero, or texting for three-days straight.

Loved your comments on turning “24″ and the insight you provided into thoughts and concerns of your generation. As a high school teacher I see a hunger for truth and something “real” in my 15 and 16 -year-old students. Some of my conservative kids were very vocal and proud to wear their McCain/Palin t-shirts. They were unashamed of their views; and willing to put up with the put-downs while most of their peers were cheering and chanting in the halls: “Obama! Obama!” They were strong and proud and brave. We adults could learn a lesson from them…and I did.

And, btw…happy birthday, honey:)

24 was my last year of liberal ignorant bliss...

DONTREADONME (Diary) Friday, June 5th at 3:31PM EST (link)

It was really a great year, I received my first career job, GWBush was elected. And 24 was the year I thought 0 of politics.

Basically, I was in bliss with ignorance. 25 was when everything changed, something like the butterfly leaving the cocoon, I woke up and realized the world was not the rainbows and unicorns I was taught in college.

Anyway, Happy-B-day, 33 is just a stones thrown away. Enjoy 24 because 10 years will fly by.

when I worked at the 1984 Republican convention in Dallas.
I was working freelance for a Washington D.C. based TV station.
That was my first real taste of how nasty libs could be. I found out I hated the newsmedia and never went into it. I loved Ronald Reagan and it was a thrill to see & hear him at the convention. We got to interview George H.W. Bush and Senator John Warner.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

These qualities will expose the vacuity of the left more than mountains of learned treatises.

Because I know that, as least speaking for myself, that my BS detector is among the most finely-tuned I have ever seen. I am not, nor are people my age, very forgiving when it comes to politicians (or anyone for that matter) philandering and smooching their way into the top.

Barack Obama seems to be the exception to the rule; my general distaste for his Administration aside, when it came to soundbites (read: the news most people my age catch), he did NOT seem like an unctuous phony. He seems to be the exception to my “philandering and smooching” rule. It was harder, at least in the beginning, to catch him with his hand in the cookie jar because he put out this aura of being so cool, calm, and relaxed.

However, I know better…but many people do not.

Your generation had never experienced the level of deception that the Obama campaign practiced

civil truth (Diary) Tuesday, June 9th at 12:50AM EST (link)

…coupled with a complicit media – the kind of deception that characterized the Communist world, which collapsed in your childhood. Basically, the assistance of an adoring airbrushing media, a well-scripted campaign, and a candidate with a tremendous knack for scripted perfomances produced a cult of personality that has little historical precedence in our nation.

Or to put it another way, given the calibration of your bs detector, the bs level of the Obama campaign was of a magnitude so off-the-scale that it blinded your bs detector – and those of an awful lot of your contemporaries as well (along with those who were older and should have been wiser and whose bs detectors should have been better calibrated).

So don’t whip yourself too hard for the past. You’ve discovered the man behind the curtain (to use the Wizard of Ox analogy) – or that the Emperor has no clothers – so now your task is to recalibrate the bs detectors of your peers to help them to regain their sight too.

And judging from this diary, you clearly understand the task ahead.

The depth of your writing and thinking shows a wholesome maturity. The fun part will be folks thinking you are “older” than you really are! Your works really shine. That makes you a beautiful person. I bet your folks are incredibly proud of you.

My twin 22 yr. old sons just graduated from college this May. While they don’t have the interest or fire their “old” mom has about the political scene at present, they both voted in the election and voted McCain/Palin. The stories they brought home about their classmates beliefs were disheartening, but not surprising. But you see, we can build even if we are starting with just a few.

Remember, you are one of the best and have something to believe in. The others are just not as far along as you are.

Gosh, I sound just like a mom! May you have many more special days!

The word that comes to mind...

fmaidment (Diary) Friday, June 5th at 8:33PM EST (link)

…is “leadership.”

Like him or not, Bush was a leader. Not a great one, but at least he lead, and that, more than anything, was why he won over pansies like Gore and Kerry.

McCain was once a leader, but he lost his will to fight and lead somewhere between the Hanoi Hilton and McCain-Feingold. The last gasps of leadership from McCain came from his selection of Palin (like her or not) as his running mate. Too little, too late.

The last really strong leader in the GOP was Newt. He didn’t care that his actions shut down the government, because he was standing his ground. The media hated him, but people responded to him. Same goes for Ronald Reagan when he took media-unfriendly stands on principle.

Obama isn’t a leader. He goes through the motions, he makes the noises, but in the end he bends his will to that of his often-conflicting constituencies. The GOP leadership should be pointing this out and making it an issue at every opportunity.

They didn’t last year.

We lost.

They aren’t now, and despite all the ammunition Obama, Pelosi and Reid are giving is, the GOP is still behind.

Maybe I don’t want Liberals in charge, but we could sure use a change of leadership around here right about now…

Amy Miller (Diary) Friday, June 5th at 10:20PM EST (link)

We need a leader. We need a person who has it..or who can at least fake it like a champ!

We are far too preoccupied with being hated. The thing about taking hits like we’re taking now is that eventually, the crazies will get bored, the mimis will stop screaming, and we’ll come out on top. We need thicker skins, and we need a leader who can stand up and whip the party into shape without worrying about “sensitivity” and “self-esteem” and “perceived racism” and whatever else we’re wringing our hands over.

I’m not saying it’s time to be a little bit mean, but …. it may be time to be a little bit mean.

Amy and the young of 2009-10 vs the young of 1981-4 and cultural relevance

Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Saturday, June 6th at 2:04PM EST (link)

Many thought that Reagan would be unable to relate to the young, but what did get related was their experience with watching their parents struggle under Carter’s recession and malaise/defeatism and the contrast with how Reagan’s conservative policies worked for their parents and for their own prospects.

Mugged by reality comes to mind, and it is happening now.

I expect huge GOP gains across the board in 2010. Obama’s personality cult will wilt as he owns the Great Recession which next year will be deeper and accompanied by higher int rates and inflation.

Da’ Yutes will relate to that.

They flocked to Reagan and the GOP due to the cultural relevance of pocketbooks.
