I am not sure what got to me the most in watching all of the health care debate.  Was it the arrogance of the legislators who thought they knew better than their constituents?  Was it the way they tried to paint the opposition as racists or right wing nuts?  Was it the way they kept coming back time and time again like the Energizer bunny until they forced this horrific piece of legislation on us?  Was it the complicit media?  Was it the way Princess Nancy cackled and grinned when the filthy deed was done?  Whatever the case, I am disgusted.

I think that a majority of Americans awoke yesterday with a sense of despair and questioning.  “What just happened to my country?”  I wasn’t alone in my feelings.  I spoke to many people who felt the same sense of defeat.  Repeatedly I heard things like; “Why should I bother trying so hard to get ahead and support my family?  They’re just going to take my money away? “ “They’re going to devastate the entire system in order to insure a few.  Wouldn’t be easier to spend a fraction of the money and just buy them insurance?”  “This will bankrupt our country”.  It goes on and on.  At the end of the day I think we all realize that what happened and what we experienced over the past year and 3 months amounts to nothing other than “The Chicago Way”.

The classic line Sean Connery had in the 1987 movie “The Untouchables”:

“They pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital; you send one of his to the morgue. *That’s* the *Chicago* way!”

The progressives have an agenda.  They have been striving for this since the time of FDR.  It doesn’t matter what the people want, it only matters what the statists want.  Their elitist attitude tells them they know better.  Their agenda is an agenda of jealousy, envy and hatred and a basic dislike for the structure of this country and its institutions.  These are the people who feel there isn’t enough “fairness” in America simply because outcomes are never the same.  These are the people who constantly need to parade out the victims and hide behind them in order to promote their ideas.  These are the people who are sanctimonious and believe that calling themselves liberals makes them more compassionate.  These are the people who apologize for America’s greatness instead of celebrating its greatness.  These are the people who brought a gun to a knife fight.

I have to give them credit where credit is due.  The Chicago Way worked.  The progressives now have their socialist program as the law of the land.  Nancy said she would pole vault or take a parachute or whatever to get it done.  She did just that.  However, as has been proven over and over throughout history, these socialistic programs never work.  They may be laughing and full of glee now, but their perceived moment of glory will be short lived.  Like all other government programs, this one will grow and need to be fed by more and more tax payer dollars.  America is not a socialist country and will not allow this to stand.  They may have won this battle, but it’s time to learn a lesson from all of this.  Moving forward, it won’t be enough to repeal this.  It won’t be enough to fight this in the courts.  We must elect conservatives.   We must let all those who voted in favor of this travesty know that America will not stand for it and vote them out of office.  They must not be given the chance to misrepresent their constituents ever again.  Perhaps it’s time for the rest of the country to learn the “Chicago Way.”

Dear President Reagan,

I woke up at 4am this morning and just couldn’t sleep.  As I lay there in the dark, I kept hearing your voice in my head.  Your famous words “it’s morning in America”.  My eyes filled with tears as I realized what had just happened.  The Reagan Revolution has been cast asunder.  My heart is aching.

In your day you called them “New Dealers”.  Today they hide themselves under the term “progressives”.  Whatever title they feel most fits their cause; we know what and who they truly are.   They are liberals or better yet, statists.  They have more faith and confidence in the abilities of the government than they do in the governed and the free market.  Their answer to all ills they deem a “problem” is more government.  They have now taken over a massive part of the economy and we can no longer claim that America is a capitalist society.  When the government regulates this much of a country’s economy it ceases to be a capitalist society and we truly are now living in a soft socialist America.

As I watched Speaker Pelosi in her giddy exuberance giggle, (she had a Peter Lorre quality to her tone)   she proudly boasted that this is “historic”.  She beamed that this Health Care Reform will go down in history as being as significant as Social Security and Medicare.  (She neglected to mention that both of these programs are now on the verge of bankruptcy.)  What is actually historic is the fact that this is so profoundly against the wishes and the voices of the American people.  What is historic is the fact this has been rammed down the throats of the people.  Their cries were for reform, yes, but takeover NO!  What is historic is that not one opposition party member voted for the bill.  What is historic is that she could barely get her own party with its large majority to pass this bill.  What is historic is the unmitigated gall and arrogance with which this has been perpetrated on the American people.

President Reagan, you know what happens once an entitlement is put into place.  It only gets larger and costs us more.  Our country is in an economic tail spin.  The Keynesians are at the helm and spending us into oblivion.  Our debt is owned by the communist Chinese and our dollar is precariously teetering on the verge of losing its triple “A” rating.  Unemployment is in double digits again.  Taxes are increasing. Companies are laying off employees in droves.  Our allies are being snubbed and our enemies are emboldened.   This Health Care power grab is just the proverbial cherry on top.  Our situation is rapidly becoming worse than the Carter years. I keep shaking my head and asking myself “what would the Gipper do?” 

As I sit in the dark trying to make sense of it all.  As I grasp for hope that this can somehow be fixed, two quotes of yours come to mind.  “Government exists to protect us from each other. Where government has gone beyond its limits is in deciding to protect us from ourselves.”  How dare they think they are smarter or can do it better than the American people?!  It has always been the within the free market where the working solutions have been found.  Government interference has only exacerbated problems and added layers of bureaucracy.

The other quote that keeps resonating with me is “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.”  Truer words have never been spoken.  I pray that we have not lost that which our founders held so dearly under the auspices of being “compassionate”.  There is nothing compassionate about spending a country into crushing generational debt.

Mr. President, I am so sorry that this has been allowed to happen.  When I think of all your hard work and all that you achieved and that shining city on a hill, I feel we have let you down.  Somehow America got caught up in a mantra of “Hope and Change” that really only amounted to the complete and utter reformation of the country.  That reformation is nothing more than the statists take over in a futile attempt to try and create a utopia that never has existed and never will.  They now are using their power as a chance to redistribute wealth under the pretense of making things “fair”.  As history has shown, whenever this is attempted lives are not improved as promised.  Instead it has only lead to corruption, tyranny and ultimately, despotism.  I wake up and what I see I do not recognize nor do I like and I keep asking over and over “What would the Gipper do?”  I only hope and pray we are not too late to return to common sense government.  Now more than ever, we need to go out there and “win one for the Gipper”.
