My last diary on RedState was titled “Why I Support Joe Miller.” Soon after that I went silent.
One of the rules here is that we don’t support a non Republican candidate, nor do we deprecate one of our candidates once they’ve been selected in the primary. I reached a point where I could not support Miller any further, so I thought the right thing to do was go silent at that point.
Soon after that diary, things got really bad for the Miller campaign. I imagine a lot of folks here were following it. I’m sure you heard about the blogger getting handcuffed, the “I’m not talking” bit with the press, and all of the associated strangeness. I was getting increasingly bothered by the lack of any positive action by the Miller campaign in response to all of this, and I know I expressed that in a couple of postings. Nothing changed, and the campaign just got more and more bizzare.
There were two things that finally sent it over the top for me. One was that his answers to *everything* became more and more Palinesque. Nothing but vague generalities. The second and most important thing was the admission of using other peoples computers at work. The actual online poll thing is trivial, using others computers without their permission under their ip address, is unforgiveable. You just don’t do it ..ever ..even once ..no matter what. I’ve worked in I/T for twenty plus years, in everything from Fortune 50 companies and Big 8 consultancies, government, small business, and in any one of those places, bar none, someone who did that would have had security immediately escort them out of the building, never to return. Doing something like that is like writing a book under someone elses name without their permission. Reputation is everything. I’ll say this, he must have been one hell of a lawyer to be able to just get away with a short suspension. The kindest thing I can say about him is he clearly is unstable and has poor impulse control, the more likely is that he is an ethical reprobate.
None of this makes me feel great about voting for Lisa. A lot of what we learned about her from all this hardly painted her or our state in a good light. She clearly has a high sense of entitlement. I imagine if as now seems likely, she goes back to the Senate, she’ll become the third Maine twin. She didn’t bother putting any energy into the primary and helped set up this bloodbath. It’s hard to know what would have happened if she had not decided to run as a write in. I can’t imagine McAdams doing the oppo research that Lisa did, but, as I’ve said before, this entire state is a small town. We’re all no more than two or three degrees away from knowing everyone. The stuff about Miller wasn’t real hard to find. If it all came out, I think McAdams would have won. By Election Day, Miller was probably the third most unpopular person in Alaskan history, after Jimmy Carter and Sarah Palin. I imagine the Murkowski folks learned about most of this stuff between the end of the primary and the time she announced her write in. We also learned that there is almost no constituency in this state for economic conservatism. According to the pollster Dave Dittman, who had worked for Miller, and had a very accurate poll, said that Lisa had actually been ahead ever since she announced the write in. Of course, that is easy to say now, but Dittman has always been an honest guy. I suspect, though I have no verifiable evidence, that the vast majority of Miller’s support came because of his pro life stance. Basically, we’re a liberal welfare state that is anti abortion and pro gun. I think we’re really in for a rude awakening sooner rather than later.
We’re also in sad sad shape in the Alaska Republican Party. I’ve spoken to a couple of the younger guys and am going to try and get more involved on the inside, precinct committes, etc. We have to ..have to ..end this civil war. We’re killing ourselves. That Unity event never happened ..maybe once the ballots are finally counted, and emotions have cooled some, hopefully we can do something.
Though I’m not writing this as a commentary on the National Election (I think most of what can be said on that has been), I do think there are a few things that are relevant to the rest of the country:
It is very difficult (yet necessary) to sell economic conservatism to a population that has gotten used to being dependent. Seeing how tough it is here, I have to imagine it is even tougher than the lower 48. THAT has to be the next job of the Tea Party. Invite friends to meetings and rallys. Evangelize. Understand that though we may not need to run “squishes”, that the majority of non political people are squishes. That is not a put down, and we are lucky that, in a Center-Right country, the squishes lean Conservative, but you have to educate, and you have to make people realize that we are not “the other.” Miller lost in large part because he actually did become a scary candidate, but the Tea Party had some great candidates in the Lower 48. Many won, a few lost in impossible circumstances, and there were a couple of ..well …bad candidates.
Speaking of the Tea Party, this was all new this year and mistakes were made. Having said that, on balance, it was the best thing to happen to the Republican Party this cycle. Even an establishment doyenne like Peggy Noonan sees that. Without the Tea Party, this is a mediocre boring mid term correction, with a lot fewer pickups in the House. You can’t win without an energized base. The next thing the folks in the various Tea Partys (gotta remember this isn’t one unified movement) need to do is start actually developing talent. There were a couple of bad candidates this year. I actually think Miller and O’Donnell were the only dishonest Tea Party endorsed candidates, a few others just seemed in over their heads. Hopefully we’ve learned that just pissing off the left, or mouthing Constitutional platitudes, does not a solid or competitive or even trustworthy candidate make. This was too new to actually vet candidates. The best way to avoid that is by developing candidates from the base of people you know and trust. I hope to never ..ever ..ever ..again, learn more about the candidate I’m supporting from opposition research, than I learn from the candidate or his campaign. I hope most of you folks never have to either. Fbks, if you are still out there, I’d love to know what you and the folks in Fairbanks think.
Speaking of squishes (again, not in the sense of political moderates, but in the sense of the non political public at large), it just is not a winning strategy to run against the “lamestream media.” Look, I get it, you get it, we get it. What happened to Miller up here was a media lynching of an uppity conservative. OK, that is what they do. We can b**ch about it till the end of time on our political blogs, but that doesn’t change it. Angle and Miller both really blew it on that. You have to talk to them, you can’t just speak in slogans, and you can’t be seen spitting on them. They still have the louder megaphone. It’s also impossible to have any privacy. Yeah, everyone lies, everyone has skeletons in their closet. You still have to assume that anything more than one person knows, will eventually get out there. I don’t care if you don’t tell your wife, you had better tell your campaign manager, and be ready to deal. (Actually you really should tell your wife, a stunned reaction from her doesn’t look good to the media either). See previous comment about oppo research.
Obligatory Palin remark of course. All I can say is, while I think Sarah’s effect on this race was way overstated at least in the General Election (I don’t think she hurt or helped that much), this is an example of the type of divisiveness that a Palin run would bring. I repeat, we cannot have a candidate that scares that non political middle. You have to try looking at it from their point of view, not ours. We can likely win with a very conservative candidate, if they don’t scare those folks.
Finally, here is a link to an article by Craig Medred in the Alaska Dispatch. They were probably the main muckrackers in this race. Their editor Tony Hopfinger is the guy that got handcuffed by Miller’s security team. I think this ended up being a jihad for them and that they ended up getting obsessed. Having said that, this article is 100 pct true.

I supported Miller and voted for him
fbks (Diary) Friday, November 5th at 5:17AM EST (link)and see things differently. Not that I have any argument with your post, I just think it understates how bad Lisa and her power supporters are. I agree that Alaska is in for a rough time with 40% dependence on federal spending in lieu of a private side economy and most of the resources locked up. I assume that fed funds will be cut way back, which is necessary, but the new congress needs to balance this with opening our resources, the 1002 area of ANWR would be a good start. We need to replace dependency with something real.
I am certain that Lisa will be exactly what the Republicans do NOT need going forward. If she fits into the new Republican caucus in the senate it will mean they learned nothing from 2006/2008 experience. They will have to compromise and make exceptions on earmarks and whatever she wants, or she is going to go with the Dems on certain votes, or entirely. She is proven unethical and the corrupt interests that openly support her are who she will represent.
Scott took 24% of the vote, the hard left, of which he should have taken 30/32%, and that 6/8% of people all voted for Lisa. Her base is either hard left or establishment corrupt interests with a few right of center “moderates”. She will pander to them with “reaching” across the aisle and this might cost some very important votes at critical times.
We do not have more than 38% conservative base and Miller took 34%, almost all of it.
What was done in the villages to support Lisa was really bad news; it became cult like, with no opposition allowed. I know of one incident wherein thousands of ballots were sent out to numerous villages from at least one Corporation to be sent back to the Corporation instead of the division of elections. I suspect fraud, and I hope Miller fights every inch of the way. This is like a Zimbabwe election, in the rural areas. What is really crazy, is most rural people live in ghettos, with rampant suicide, alcoholism, drug addiction, child sexual abuse and they act like Lisa is “for” them, instead of a handful of executives and their families who live in Anchorage and Fairbanks.
This feedback is from many sources, a lot of Native people I know well are offended by this whole election, but the outside will simply repeat the mantra that they are unified for Lisa. The other issue is the division of elections and the courts changing the terms for a write in campaign, just for Lisa. The rules are very specific and have been upheld in previous write in bids until now.
Miller never had more than 37/38% support and considering the manner he was battered (and his own poor response to it) by the media, they did not chip him down as bad as I thought they were, although they managed to make sure he had 0 appeal outside the base. If Scott had taken the full 30/31% of the left wing vote, this would be over, as Lisa would be done. The drama all seemed to be between Lisa/Miller, but the bottom line is Lisa beat Scott out of his own base and blunted any forward movement by Miller.

You have nothing to add until the votes are counted
pilgrim (Diary) Friday, November 5th at 3:41PM EST (link)All you have is that 100% of the votes have been received. You know that the largest % of these votes are write-in. You do not know the final tally of the votes. It is like anecdotal junk you are putting into this diary that may have no bearing on the outcome. I live in Texas, and Rick Perry received no endorsements from the major newspapers. He refused to debate Bill White, and he irked the major TV and newspaper reporters by ignoring them. Real Clear Politics had the contest listed as just leans GOP, but when the results came in he won by a landslide. I am not suggesting Joe Miller will win by a large margin. I am suggesting that it is way too early for a post mortem on this Alaska contest.
pilgrim- Thank you for the proper perspective
Scope (Diary) Friday, November 5th at 4:27PM EST (link)at this point in this race. I keep reading that things are looking good for Mercowsky, however, if that is the case, then why is she bringing high profile, high priced Atty. Ben Ginsberg in at this time?
If the princess manages to pull this off, she will be arriving in Washington with a badly damaged reputation, that I don’t think time will erase.
If she makes it back in
AKSteveB (Diary) Friday, November 5th at 4:47PM EST (link)the folks in DC and Alaska will barely remember that there was a controversy. All of us need to try to look at things from the point of view of a non political person. As an example, I’d imagine Jim DeMint is probably the most popular Senator on RedState. In the real world, he’ll mostly be an ignored backbencher, except by us. I do not mean this AT ALL as a shot at Senator DeMint, or the regulars here, just that we all get caught up in our own little circle.

pilgrim (Diary) Friday, November 5th at 5:10PM EST (link)We will not know who the write-in votes are awarded to until the decisions are made during the process. I do not think your diary hurts or helps either candidate, but I think you should have waited until more facts are available.
If she's won
southernilpat Friday, November 5th at 2:52PM EST (link)That’s fine. The people of Alaska can elect whomever they choose. If the Republicans accept her and go on with business as usual, however, it will not bode well for them in trying to convince people anything has changed.
Queen Lisa has now hired Ben Ginsberg
Scope (Diary) Friday, November 5th at 3:42PM EST (link)Atty Ben Ginsberg, who played a major role in the 2000 Republican Fla. recount debacle will now be helping Queen Lisa. If the Wiki info is correct, he is still current council to the RNC, the NRSC and the NRCC, in addition to being a lobbyist.
If anyone ever again donates money to the NRSC, don’t tell me. I will hunt you down and pull a Ruth Buzzy on you. There cannot be enough bad said about Cornyn and the NRSC.

mbecker908 (Diary) Friday, November 5th at 5:01PM EST (link)Gee, that “debacle” would be the ONLY recount we’ve managed to come out on top of in the last decade. I’d certainly rather have Ben, if that is indeed the case, than anybody who worked for Norm Coleman.

Good to know you are on the establishment side, once again
Scope (Diary) Friday, November 5th at 9:48PM EST (link)Thank you God, you are in the minority, not only here at RS, but, in the country as a whole.
What a completely inane and stupid comment.
mbecker908 (Diary) Friday, November 5th at 11:42PM EST (link)Of course, when considering the source…
I supported Miller prior to the vote. It’s all over now. One way or the other, we win. It’s a seat we hold. I don’t expect you to in any way understand the import of that, but it’s a fact. In either case, neither will be a “mover and shaker” in the new Congress and I would guess that, at least for the duration of the Obama Administration, their voting record would look pretty much the same.
And as far as “the country as a whole”, I’d bet that the vast majority of the country doesn’t give a rip and they don’t have a clue what the issues are.
Looks like NRSC is going to help Miller
AKSteveB (Diary) Friday, November 5th at 5:25PM EST (link)From adn.com
Friday, the National Republican Senatorial Committee sent out an e-mail encouraging donors to assist Miller. The NRSC’s main aim is to elect and re-elect Republicans, and until today it was unclear whether it would fully back Miller’s post-election fight with Murkowksi, another Republican.
In his e-mail, the chairman of the NRSC, Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, warned that both sides “are beginning to lawyer up and prepare for any possible legal fights. Joe needs your help to make sure he has enough money to make it a fair contest.”
“We need to get Joe the resources he needs to win the vote count,” he wrote. “Because we need Joe to join our fight against Barack Obama. Help ensure that this vote count is conducted fairly.”

Pardon me John but just one question if you don't mind
Michael Dugas (Diary) Friday, November 5th at 6:01PM EST (link)Why the hell are you just NOW caring. You screwed the pooch on Rubio, Crist, Rand and O’Donnell and just now you care about Joe Miller? Maybe if you got off your high horse earlier in the campaign and weren’t so busy trying to thwart the will of the voters Miller wouldn’t find himself in the need for further help.
John Cornyn your are the picture of the establishment politician which is exactly what the voters in this country were moving to do away with.
You are lucky your re-election date is so far off but we will not forget and we’ll be keeping track .

Ginsberg is working for Murkowski
Scope (Diary) Friday, November 5th at 6:36PM EST (link)and again, Ginsberg is possibly current council for the NRSC. The NRSC is sending out smoke and mirrors messages. They may send Miller a few staff people, but, there support will be meaningless in the end. Cornyn’s NRSC is on Murkowski’s side, and they will help her in any way they can.

ps- I want to add
Scope (Diary) Friday, November 5th at 7:39PM EST (link)that Ginsberg is supposedly a Republican supporter, or has worked for Republican campaigns. Murkowski is currently not a Republican, Miller is. Murky is now an Independent. Gee, that’s weird, unless of course you are still representing the NRSC.
Exactly
fpete13527 (Diary) Friday, November 5th at 7:51PM EST (link)One thing that could get very interesting
AKSteveB (Diary) Friday, November 5th at 6:43PM EST (link)in the sense of the Chinese curse, is that the Alaska Native vote went almost entirely to WriteIn. There are a number of villages where a lot of the Natives have less than ideal writing skills. I find it hard to imagine that with all the prep work, wristbands, commercials, etc. that many would misspell her name, but it it was to happen, that would be where. If Miller somehow wins via disqualification of write in ballots, I’ll go hang out someplace safer for a while, like Oakland.

What Standards?
SteveLA (Diary) Friday, November 5th at 7:23PM EST (link)AKSteveB
Do you have any indication yet from the local news on what sort of standard the state is going to apply when it comes to that always nebulous term “the will of the voter”?
I’d guess that Murkowski will be for a fairly liberal interpretation of that term, Miller…who knows.

Competency over ideological purity and litmus tests
As with everything else in this race ...
AKSteveB (Diary) Friday, November 5th at 7:51PM EST (link)standards are a disputed clusterf**k. Basically the state law conflicts with Alaska legal precedent and Federal Election Regs.
State law is pretty clear. You must fill in the correct oval and write the last name of the candidate *exactly* as they spelled it when they registered as a write in. I believe this was the standard the last time there was a serious write in candidate in a statewide vote (Robin Taylor in 1998). Taylor wasn’t close enough for it to matter (19 pct of the vote I think).
In previous ballot disputes here, the Courts have ruled that “intent of the voter” is what counts. Lt. Governor Campbell has said that close spellings will be allowed, as long as everyone reviewing the ballot agrees. Federal law also goes with “intent of the voter.” e.g. hanging chads. There are 14th Amendment issues both ways. A case can be made that not allowing misspellings puts non English speakers and natives at a disadvantage. An argument can be made that allowing them gives the write in candidate an unfair advantage.
I hope that made it clear as mud.
Hell is other people – Sartre
Yep sure does
SteveLA (Diary) Friday, November 5th at 8:00PM EST (link)AKSteveB
Makes things clear I guess. One way to avoid challenges is a clear set of guidelines for ballot scrutineers across the state (not sure that’s what they are called in AK). Advanced training in the form of some sort of video or something like that would be a good thing too in my way of thinking.
So do you think we’ll have a repeat of Bush v Gore with live videos on the net of ballots being looked at with magnifying glasses and all the rest of that sort of drama.

Competency over ideological purity and litmus tests
God I hope not
AKSteveB (Diary) Friday, November 5th at 8:17PM EST (link)I really don’t see the margin changing that much. Even most of his Alaska supporters have conceded that he has little chance. If you are curious, you can stream Dan Fagan at KFQD.com or Glenn Biegel at KBYR.com and listen. They are Joe’s two radio cheerleaders here and they admit defeat.
Joe’s paranoia about everyone being out to get him is way way over the top, but I do imagine Lisa will get most of the legal breaks if it comes down to that. I also imagine if Joe won that way, the recall petitions would go out the next day. Right now he is the most hated person in this state, I can’t even imagine the level of hatred out there if that came to pass.
At this point I think Joe is just out for the money. He’s left himself in a serious financial hole, He is not wealthy, and went deeply into personal debt to do this. A lot of commitments to him (Tea Party Express as an example) were broken when it became clear his campaign was breaking down. He’s been on a couple of the radio shows here begging for money, just as he did today on RedState. It’s going to be interesting to see whether or not he can pay his bills from the campaign. He has a very poor financial reputation in Fairbanks and the Interior. There is also more “dirt” on him out there, and I imagine he can be threatened with exposure if he doesn’t play nice. (To make it clear I do NOT think that is right!, but it is a factor).
Hell is other people – Sartre
"Optics" would stink also
SteveLA (Diary) Friday, November 5th at 8:22PM EST (link)AKSteveB
My comment about Bush v Gore and the broadcasting of the examination of ballots left a pretty bad taste in people’s mouth if you watched most of it. Frankly the partisans from both side came off looking pretty foolish if you watched much of the examination of Chad’s a Hanging and all the arguing.
The visuals, the “optics” of broadcasting the review of the AK write in ballot review process and hard core supporters from ether camp acting out would not be a good thing for ether canidate in my view.
