A Horrible Terrible no good very bad day for the Heath Palin clan

this was not exactly a sparkling day for the Palin-Heath clan.

1) Todd’s half sister was arrested for 2 burglaries apparently with her 4 y/o daughter in tow.

2)  The Legislature has rejected her rejection of their rejection of Tim Grussendorf to take the place of Kim Elton.  Senate Pres. Gary Stevens (R-Kodiak) is supporting a lawsuit.

3)  Levi Johnston gave an interview to Tyra Banks, stating that he and Bristol “mostly” practiced safe sex, and that Sarah had to know they were having sex “Moms are pretty smart.”  There was some other dirty laundry as well, and Meg Stapleton is already out saying he was lying etc.

4)  She apparently missed another meeting with the Leg over the Stimulus package.  She stated in an interview with Anne Sutton of AP that the Leg. really controlled the pursestrings and that they wanted the money, the Leg. says her veto power is the final say.

5)  Though I don’t think it will really happen, there is actually growing noise about Ted Stevens running for Governor in 2010.  If he did, I don’t *think* Palin would have a chance in a primary.  How ironic would that be?

I wonder if the bloom is coming off the rose for anyone on the national scene.

Seriously. You must be joking.

The fact that we know all of these things about her tells me we just can’t get enough of her.

As for Ted, I don’t see it happening, he is 85 y/o. But I’d never say never. I’m not sure the rest of the country understands just how popular he is up here. If it did happen, I’d be thrilled, because I think he might actually be able to make the gas line happen.

what, exactly, people expected Palin to do WRT the Bristol situation. It’s not like Bristol was five and Gov. Palin could just put her over her lap and spank her. Somewhere along the way, it has to be acknowledged that these kids are gonna make decisions about their lives, and that these decisions may not be marked with Aristotelean good sense, no matter their parentage.

Still, we owe a debt of gratitude for Palin’s run. She got us talking, really talking about what we want in our next leaders, even if she doesn’t quite make the cut in the end.

Before, we talked about settling, supporting the R candidate, and the candidate we got was the one we least wanted because the media led us around by the noses with the on again/off again affair with McCain.

We learned a lot and if we stop worrying about 2012 and worry about what we want to see for 2012 maybe we’ll have a better chance at getting at least close to what we want.

In the meantime, we can still work on 2010 which isn’t that far ahead in the future.

point. I think the one thing we can learn going forward from both Obama and Palin is that charisma matters. What I am concerned about is the gas pipeline that was already in trouble and her increasingly erratic behavior is bringing state business to a halt, not that that is always a bad thing. I also really do love Alaska, and the PWT Circus from Wasilla just makes us look bad.

A leader isn’t somebody who gets behind and pushes us in the direction we should go but who inspires us to go in that direction voluntarily… even if sometimes we wander off the straight and narrow.

AKSteveB (Diary) Friday, April 3rd at 9:44PM EST (link)

and yeah the media did a hatchet job on her, but she gave, and continues to give them the material. I travel a fair amount, and even a cab driver in Rome, who probably knew 30 words of English, when I mentioned Alaska, said “Sarah Palin.” The Palinbots won’t understand this, but at this point to a lot of us up here, she is the somewhat addled aunt at the family reunion, who we mostly try to pretend isn’t there. And no, most of us weren’t members of “The Corrupt Bastards Club”, and a lot of us (though admittedly not I), were enthusiastic about her in the beginning.

For the larger Republican world out there, I really hope you don’t think the answer to Obamanation is a Pat Buchananesque Pitchfork Parade. I think that is what most of her lower 48 supporters see in her (even though it mostly isn’t true).

Go back and look at some of my old comments

Achance (Diary) Friday, April 3rd at 10:28PM EST (link)

in which I said this was going to be the first real test of her governing ability, a Legislative Session and a fiscal year in which she had to make real budget decisions. Her first two sessions the State was rolling in money and she really didn’t have to say no to anybody. Her “cuts” that she bragged about were just reductions in increments and were aimed at people who had crossed her. Now, real decisions have to be made and doing something for somebody is doing something to somebody. Plus, she’s got to play to a National audience as well. She really hasn’t made any of those decisions. She’s taken the pander position or played to the National audience and left the turd in the Legislature’s pocket. They ain’t real happy with her and that isn’t a good place for a Governor to be.

In Vino Veritas

I have looked and noted your observations.

Steph C (Diary) Friday, April 3rd at 10:36PM EST (link)

I believe I’ve even recc’d a few, :-) .

The only time I’ve really objected to any of your Palin diaries is the one time you inserted a lot of personal into it and, even then, I only made an observation that you did because of the heated exchange that took place over it and spilled over into another diary.

Grappling with someone’s like or dislike over a particular politician doesn’t get any of us anywhere. We need the information, factual and straightforward even if what we’re reading isn’t commiserate with our fantasy of great. It’s the only way we can make the right decisions when the time comes.

If I favor anybody at all right now it would be Jindal and that’s subject to change, too. There are people on here who don’t much care for him, either.

So, to me, it’s all six of one, half dozen of another.

I think she’s probably right about the unconstitutionality of the law. There’s also a good argument that the closed caucus vote violates the State’s Open Meetings Act under which you can decide how you’re going to vote in a closed caucus, but the actual vote that decides any public matter must be taken in public.

She’s done more twists and turns about stimulus money than I can keep up with. First she made her dramatic, “I’m not taking it” press release that everybody got all orgasmic about. Then she said she was only taking part of it. Then she had Lt. Gov. Parnell start talking about what parts of it people wanted taken. Then she said she only wanted to have a dialog with the Legislature about what parts of it they wanted to take.

Just as she did with the budget itself, she played to the cheap seats and set it up for the Legislature to have to make all the tough decisions.

As to the stuff with kids and Todd’s relative, who cares?

I know this is an opinion piece, but it would be good to put some links in because the subjects are all important, at the very least link the part about Todd’s half sister…not that *I* think that has anything to do with Gov. Palin’s ability or lack of, whichever it ends up being.

Otherwise it looks like gossip….I think Gov Palin is in a hole in a big way, but she has many loyal fans, we will see how this all pans out.

That said…things don’t look good.

Here is a link to an article from Andrew Halcro. He is a major critic of the gov. and definitely not one of the “good old boys” (actually he is a nerd deluxe), so caveat emptor. It does flesh out more of what Art and I have been talking about in terms of her working with the Legislature.

…but she is making it harder than it should be. I have learned quite a bit by reading Art’s diaries and following the links, I balance that with Josh Painter…between the two, and now you, I can form a pretty informed opinion.

Keep up the writing…just tighten up a bit if you want to get some real traction with the regulars who are also skeptical but sympathetic to Gov. Palin.

I think reason will prevail.

Husker (Diary) Saturday, April 4th at 3:29AM EST (link)

Is it me, or is the media trying to turn the Palin family into a caricature of the Spears family? I know much of this isn’t Governor Palin’s fault, but it is adding fuel to a media beaten dead horse of a Republican party in disarray and frankly it’s getting to be a distraction.

I too have learned much on the inside baseball from Art and others to get a decent picture of how things work there. She was the one who actually gave me a reason to donate money and vote for McCain, and I don’t regret my vote one bit. Governor Palin just needs to take care of business in the time she has remaining in her term and then decide what she wants to do down the line.

With respect to AKSteve, the half-sister thing is going to go viral anyways, so it’s just best to get it out in the open to diffuse it. Unlike the Democrats, we don’t have the MSM on speed dial to squash a story if a Republican family member has a Billy Carter moment.

azaeroprof (Diary) Saturday, April 4th at 1:30AM EST (link)

Look, I say this as a fairly open-minded Palin fan and as someone who delighted in watching Eric Holder eat crow on the Stevens thing.

If Stevens were to take on and defeat Palin in a primary, it would certainly make the lefties (and Art?) orgasmic in the extreme. But seriously, most of us Repubs & Conservatives in the lower 48 see Ted Stevens as a porkmaster who is just a small step behind Robert Byrd (D-WV) in his ability to extract tax money and is somewhat more corrupt, prosecutor malfeasance notwithstanding. If AK were to throw out Palin for an 87-year-old with Stevens’ reputation, the AK GOP would become the laughingstock of the party for years to come.

While we’re at it, why don’t we try to primary Jindal in LA, Sanford in SC, and find a way to dis’ Mitt Romney. We’ll just ‘civil war’ all our potential ’12 candidates and make it real easy on the O-man to get re-elected. Somewhere, Axelrod, Carville, Begala, and co. are laughing hysterically.

Man this must just be the night for states vs. federal rants.

AKSteveB (Diary) Saturday, April 4th at 1:43AM EST (link)

1) A state governor has a different set of responsibilities than a senator. Other than perhaps Sen. Coburn, I think they’ve all been porkers to one degree or another. It is what happens when so much of the tax base goes to the feds. Most Governors have to have balanced budgets, though of course we all know they often find loopholes (we’re kind of unique up here in having a Constitutional Reserve).

2) I think we probably are the laughing stock to the rest of the GOP. Sen. Stevens is only one part of that though. Gov. Palin, Congressman Young, and the fact that we had some idiots go to jail for pocket change assures it.

3) the state and federal thing again. You can be almost certain that if Palin runs for gov again in 2010 (I suspect she won’t), she will be primaryed. She’s just pissed off too many people, and it is unreasonable to ask anyone not to run against her because of her national ambitions. I really don’t think Stevens will be the one to do it, my point was, if he did, he would win.

Hell is other people – Sartre

I pretty much agree...

azaeroprof (Diary) Saturday, April 4th at 1:50AM EST (link)

I wasn’t referring at all to what Stevens would do as Gov relative to what Palin has done, just referring to the views of these two that are widely held (in the GOP primarily) in the lower 48.

…and you may be right about the AK GOP already being the laughingstock…except among the millions (yes, millions) of Palin fans in the lower 48. I’ll be you can’t find half a dozen Stevens fans outside of AK ;-)

…and even as a Palin fan myself, I would have no problem, if she runs, with someone in AK primarying her. That’s part of the game. And I would bet you’re right that Stevens could beat her. I’m just sayin’ that AK’s reputation in the lower 48 would be better served by a serious challenger who doesn’t have the baggage that Stevens carries…

under “worthless tabloid crap that doesn’t matter” to Palin supporters. Or they can be filed under “wishful thinking” by Palin critics.

Twists and turns on the stimulus by Palin are no more serpentine than those we have seen taken by Jindal and now Sanford, who just caved.

Palin and Sen. Murkowski have apparently been working together. The Senator just introduced legislation which would clear some of the hurdles for construction of the Alaskan intrastate (Bullet) gas pipeline that the governor called for in her state of the state address.

Palin still enjoys a 60% approval rating in Alaska. At his advanced age, it’s not likely that Steven would challenge her, and if he does, it’s not certain that he would defeat her. She will probably run for reelection in 2010, but she has other options. I doubt that she would challenge Murkowski for the Senate in 2012, but a Palin-Begich contest in 2014 would be an interesting matchup.

If Parnell didn’t want it so badly, one could even imagine Palin challenging Young for his House seat. His 76% lifetime ACU rating would be seen as pretty pathetic by most conservatives.

I'm no Palin fan BUT

modgopgal Saturday, April 4th at 2:04AM EST (link)

I do think the latest media about her sister-in-law and Levi are plain silly. Gov. Palin certainly can’t control her sister-in-law and is in no way responsible for her behavior. As for Levi, he appears to be using his connection to the Palin family to make a quick buck. I say this as someone who is not a supporter of Gov. Palin. The media should stay focused on her policies, not rumors spread by Levi, who is likely a spurned lover who wants to get back at Bristol

Most of it is pretty silly, the one part that is politically relevant though

AKSteveB (Diary) Saturday, April 4th at 2:10AM EST (link)

is that there seems to be constant chaos around her. As the last campaign showed us, discipline and “controlling the message” is critical. That discipline allowed an otherwise wet behind the ears “community activist” to claim gravitas vs. candidates with much stronger bona fides.

Hell is other people – Sartre

True, but...

azaeroprof (Diary) Saturday, April 4th at 2:23AM EST (link)

remember that Obama campaign had months with little coverage while the attention was on Hillary, the presumptive nominee, to develop that discipline. Then, when it looked like there might be a fight, he had a “thrill up my leg” media to cover for him.
Sarah has CONSTANT media coverage from a media that is all too willing to find any dirt they can or even make it up if they can’t. I’m not so sure that the vaunted Obama “machine” could have stood up to the Palin media assault without seeming to be in chaos, either.

mom2oneson (Diary) Saturday, April 4th at 6:07AM EST (link)

I won’t even click on those AP article links about Levi. It’s so dumb they have these stories about 2 unmarried parents fighting.

I think this is part of what she invited though by having Levi on stage with her and traveling with them. If she had her son’s girlfriend on stage there I would have thought that was tacky too, I’m not targeting Levi. Also they were rubbing hands, that was dumb of the media to show that but that isn’t appropriate in public. I don’t know why either Gov Pailin or Mr. Palin didn’t say anything to them, like don’t touch each other in public, especially since her younger siblings were right there.

I didn’t agree with her announcing Bristol’s pregnancy and there was no need for her to announce his name when she did it.

It doesn’t excuse the silly media but I think she does invite it by including this private family stuff in statements and having him with them.

I thought it showed poor values having him travel with them. If my son had a pregnant girlfriend he would be working and/or in school if I had any say, not traveling around with her around the country. I certainly would not provide for him to travel around when he desperately needs to finish high school or learn a skill or earn plain old money to support the kid on the way.

with the latest stories about family chaos. Her changing positions on the stimulus package — as Achance noted — and her battles over filling a Senate seat are all issues that, IMO, should be discussed objectively since they involve substantive policy issues. But what her sister-in-law does or what some barely legal former boyfriend of her daughter says on some gossip show is irrelevant and shouldn’t be getting any air time.

There are many differences I have with Sarah Palin but I will defend her when she is dragged through the mud over issues not related to her performance in government. I also think she had a right to respond to Levi’s comments, especially his claims that Gov. Palin allowed him to sleep in the same bed with her daughter at their house. That just sounds preposterous and the Governor had a responsibility to her family to rebut such a claim.

Except that I well know the limitations here on what control parents have over kids, you have to wonder why the Palins let him near their daughter. I can only assume that they decided, as have I at times, that it was better to have him around so they could keep something of an eye on things than have her sneaking around with him. Often that is the tough but necessary choice since if you try to tell them what to do, they just run away and the State supports them. Back when the World was still sane, we wouldn’t have been talking about the shotgun wedding (that fortunately never happened), we’d have been talking about the shotgun killing and the consensus of opinion would have been, “needed killin’”

This problem is that Levi is acting like the schmuck he evidently is and in a world that has lost his sanity, he is lionized (and probably financially rewarded) for publically acting like a schmuck rather than being cut down to size, losing several inches or more in the process (as would have happened in times past).

Sarah is right to have spoken out as she did – in today’s world, ignoring Levi would allow her opponents to control the public debate – a lesson which Republicans need to learn, just look at George Bush.

However, Sarah continues to need to do right by refusing future comment – and keeping Bristol our of the public eye and away from reporters. Like Queen Elizabeth dealing with her dysfunctional family members.

Instaed, she needs come up with some accomplishments as governor. If Sarah is mending fences with Murkowski and working with her, that’s a good start. Even better if she doesn’t run against Murkowski in 2010.

Hopefully, Sarah is starting to realize that she needs to start finding some allies in her own political party, because the Democrats who helped her career are not exactly her friends and were not motivated by an altruistic interest in Sarah’s welfare.

Maybe Sarah will even start to fire some Democrats in the state bureaucracy – or am I getting too far ahead of myself here…

The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice.
