Coulter: Congratulations, Unlearned Fool, You’re the Conservative of the Year

In what amounts to one of the most bizarre columns I’ve read by Ann Coulter (and with Coulter, that says something), Coulter hands out Human Events’ Conservative of the Year Awardto Sarah Palin. Generally, these columns are written full of adulation for that lucky conservative who fought hardest and best for conservative values. But Palin-bashers, never fear, Coulter came not just to praise Palin, but to bury her.

Coulter opts to dedicate most of her column to bashing the media for their double standard in going tougher on Palin than Barack Obama. Fair points, Ann, but who is this column about, anyway? Ann gets to that eventually, writing:

Palin was a kick in the pants, she energized conservatives, and she made liberal heads explode. Other than his brave military service, introducing Sarah Palin to Americans is the greatest thing John McCain ever did for his country.

But unless Palin is going to be the perpetual running mate of “moderate” Republicans who need conservative bona fides, she will need to become wiser and better read. Even Reagan didn’t run for President in his 40s. (True Obama is in his 40s, but we are not Democrats.)

Perhaps Palin’s year is 2012, but I would recommend that she take a little more time to become older and wiser. She ought to spend the next decade being a good governor, tending to her children so none of them turn out like Ron Reagan Jr., and reading everything Phyllis Schlafly, Thomas Sowell, Ronald Reagan and “Publius” have ever written. (She also might keep in mind that HUMAN EVENTS was Ronald Reagan’s favorite newspaper!)

Yes, in a truly bizarre twist, Ann Coulter not only spends most of a column that’s supposed to be praising Palin, bashing Obama and the press, she uses the column honoring Palin to try and torpedo a Palin 2012 run.

Where does one begin to refute Palin’s nonsense?

1) The age factor. First of all, it seems somewhat of a technicality.  “Whoever, we nominate has to be 50 or over, and Palin will be 48. She fails to pass our extra-constitutional age requirement.”  You’re right, we’re not Democrats. You can tell that because the Democrats have eighty more Congressmen and at least seventeen more Senators. Maybe the Founders knew what they were talking about when they set the requirement at 35.

I hate to point this out, but Ronald Reagan didn’t run a serious campaign for President until 1976 (1968 was a favorite son candidacy) at the age of 65. I guess it’s time to print up the Palin 2024 bumper stickers.

And using Reagan as a standard of the right age to run for the Presidency is idiotic. Reagan was the oldest man ever elected to a first term. The “do everything exactly like Reagan” obsession is the most asinine thing I’ve ever heard. Sarah Palin does not need to be the next Ronald Reagan. She needs to be the best Sarah Palin she can be. No great leader becomes great by trying to be a copy of someone else.

2.   To paraphrase Hamlet, Coulter says, “Get thee to a library.” Of course, Coulter doesn’t really know what Sarah Palin has read. Coulter assumes Palin hasn’t read the Federalist Papers, hasn’t read Sowell, hasn’t read Schlafly, hasn’t read Reagan, and doesn’t read Human Events. This is a lot of assuming.

Where does Coulter believe Palin got her conservatism? Under a caribou? Palin’s views have no doubt been influenced by these conservative thinkers or by people who were influenced by these thinkers.

Plus, just like you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover, it’s stupid to judge a political leader by their bookshelf. Remember that Arnold Schwarzenegger read Milton Friedman’s “Free to Choose.” Tell me what type of fiscal conservative has Arnold been?

In addition, Ann’s bookshelf judgment seems to be a bit one-sided. She viscerally attacked Mike Huckabee despite the fact that Huckabee grew up reading Schlafly, and in his 20s listened to countless Paul Weyrich lectures on tape.

3.  Do politicians really get wiser with more time in office? The reality that this is not the case leads many conservatives to support term limits.

4. Finally, Coulter argues that Sarah Palin should spend the next decade as Governor of Alaska (never mind that come 2014, Sarah Palin has to leave the Governorship, and thus can only remain six years) and that she needs to wait until she’s finished raising her kids. Isn’t this the same argument heard from liberals earlier in the year? Indeed, Coulter skewers the argument earlier in the piece.

And it should be noted, that no one’s writing open letters to Bobby Jindal suggesting he needs to stay in Louisiana and raise his children. Whatever arguments are raised against the Bobby Jindal bloomlet, his kids aren’t one of them.

Certainly, Sarah Palin should take her family into consideration (as should every candidate or potential candidate) but the idea that you have a National Columnist bossing Sarah Palin around on this is more than a little bit unseemly.

Ann Coulter was a Romney woman in the 2008 primaries. If she wants to push that point of view, that’s her right. However, in a piece that was to honor Sarah Palin as the conservative of the year, Coulter in short order trashed her as an unlearned fool unready to lead her party or the nation.  With honors like this who needs hit pieces?

If Coulter feels this way, she should have left the honors to someone who would actually honor Sarah Palin. Instead Coulter decided to show herself classless by using the editorial to minimize Palin and to try to knock down Palin’s 2012 Presidential hopes. In my view, Coulter’s incoherent piece undermined Coulter more than it did anyone else.

I am not a fan of Coulter

indym (Diary) Tuesday, December 23rd at 12:31AM EST (link)

I have seen her on too many talk shows and have listened to some of her lectures. I think she sometimes deliberately says these things to get attention and remain relevant. I think there is a lot of hesteria and envy over Sarah Palin from both democrats and sadly republicans.

I think you're reading way too much into this ...

Let’s be honest here, to a significant number of people whose votes we needed, Palin did not give off the impression of being well-read. And while that’s very likely not true, it’s perception that counts, and its partly her fault that she allowed that impression to develop.

I lay the rest of the blame on John McCain for demanding a cheerleader instead of a running-mate, and his crew for botching her roll-out, which is not surprising given that Schmidt decided to put Bush’s White House Non-Communications Director Nicole Wallace in charge of it.

Sorry, I just don’t think you’re being fair to Coulter here.

That is only my opinion though.

I personally think it's more than an "impression"...

mikefisk (Diary) Tuesday, December 23rd at 8:18AM EST (link)

…to wit, the intellectual side of politics isn’t Palin’s strong suit anyways, so why get all wrapped up in it? (To be fair to Palin, though, most politicians are pretty deficient in the intellectual side of their profession.)

To me, the bigger risk she faces moving forward politically is painting herself into a corner over the pursuit of the populist mantle. It plays well to a certain segment of the population, sure, but so does modern liberalism… and both are very polarizing. I think Sarah Palin has proven herself to be a capable and savvy politician, but her main stump speech is one that plays better in some circles than others, and some of the circles that it doesn’t play well in are relatively well-established parts of the Republican coalition.

Basically, Palin’s proven herself very popular in small-town America… but has she made herself persona non grata to most everyone who isn’t part of small-town America in the process?

coalition that is the BIGGEST part of the problem or as I like to call them Rockefeller Republicans those who noses are so far up in the air they would drown in a rainstorm…..I am sick of them and sick of their social liberalism while riding the one leg of the stool that gives them a tax cut….they disgust me and their time is coming to an end…..Sarah appealed to the masses across the country 30K here 60K there because they are hungry for someone REAL and not contrived and not inside the beltway which is why The Messiah did so well with the lefties…..PEOPLE are sick of the lifelong politicians who have never sullied their hands and pick the pockets of hard working Americans…..I submit to you that was the draw of Reagan!

Partially true...

mikefisk (Diary) Tuesday, December 23rd at 9:30AM EST (link)

…I have a fair bit of animus for the Rockefeller Republicans (mainly due to their propensity for dynastic politics and “take-your-turn” succession rules), but, from my own personal background, the move to populism is a play to the baser instincts of the body politic, rule by the lowest common denominator.

I have a hard time going after the social liberals; I guess, in my own relative indifference to social issues in general, I sort of am one myself (that aside, I have similar levels of acceptance for socially conservative policies as socially liberal ones; I’ll take responsibility for living my own life and leave everyone else to theirs, and be prepared for those who seek to interfere with mine).

Where Palin has succeeded so far is, in terms of electoral numbers, so far only kicking out the smallest group of the Republican coalition, that being the Beltway cognoscenti. Unfortunately for her, the chattering class took her down in the process, and the handlers McCain had for her kept her from fighting back properly. At this point, I’d consider her political career on a national level to be effectively destroyed, but stranger things have happened… take, for instance, Richard Nixon’s rise from political oblivion in the late 1960s.

Finally, in a curious sense of irony, it may be the same Rockefeller Republicans that give Palin her chance at redemption in national politics, as she’s established herself now as one of a select few that are “next in line”. I swear, the machinations of the political juggernaut make me glad I pretty well abandoned my study of political science and Constitutional law and went into economics instead.

Coulter is correct in some ways.

Rod_Patrick (Diary) Tuesday, December 23rd at 9:54AM EST (link)

Sarah Palin has to sharpen her policies, her knowledge, her sense of leadership, her experience, her skills, her touch/perception of the people, address the Alaskan issues, etc.

Sarah must understand that the major disease in Washington and threat to our national security is not corruption but bipartisanship (i.e., giving up conservative principles for the sake of political compromises).

But I am optimistic. Sarah has all the opportunities to hone her talent.

She has an instinctive wisdom, which is the FEAR OF THE LORD! Her unabashed conservatism is what makes her more decent than any politician in Washington.

Well, as a devout Coulter fan

MelZ (Diary) Tuesday, December 23rd at 12:20PM EST (link)

to the nth degree….I have a bit of different perspective on her article….

A) Coulter is a genious at reading the media. She can and will predict with great precission how someone is going to to be treated by the media.

B) Coulter is a realist…she is not looking at Palin like most of us are. We look at Palin as the saving grace of the GOP. Coulter is looking at all the ways the media and the majority of the GOP can destroy her.

So while Coulter respects and admires Palin she is looking at the big picture…and I think what she sees is an opportunity for Palin to really shine several years down the road. Strong, true Conservative leaders do not get treated well by Democrats, media, or Republicans. It is important for Palin to have such a strong background that there is no argument that she is ready when that time comes.

MelZ

I think this is a very good point

Alberta (Diary) Tuesday, December 23rd at 1:23PM EST (link)

There are some Palin haters on this board true. But there are also some Palin worshippers on this board. Neither position is helpful in a political sense.

Take a step back. Palin came on the scene and we all saw the reaction. Dont get mad at it, observe it. They say she is a unread hick. Fine. Work to dispell that issue. Write a policy paper on something, or consistently quote from books in interviews. The double standard here is obvious, as most pols arent asked what books they have read or what papers they read, but it is there and it must be dealt with. We dont control the ‘machine’ so we have to play ball.

I agree with MelZ. I think Coulter is trying to help Palin with this article. She brings in Obama and all the dumb things he has said. I think this is a pretty clear example of the establishment ignoring one guys mistakes and embellishing the other. If thats the rules of the game, though, we must adapt. Palin has to be better, because its obvious she wont be allowed to make human mistakes, as when she does gaffe or something, every talking head in the country pounces. Coulters article is more pro Palin then it is anti, to me.

Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God’s side, for God is always right.

Diogenes314 (Diary) Tuesday, December 23rd at 2:13PM EST (link)

For anyone who sees this as some sort of anti-Palin attack. The question isn’t whether she should run in 2012(or 2010), but why would she want to? Keeping in mind that the attacks on her family and her personally will only escalate she might not want to put them through it at their ages. It’s not like she’s a Democrat or beltway media type who gets a free pass, and she has yet to even imply that she’s interested in a run for POTUS or Senate.

Oh, and from the OP…

In addition, Ann’s bookshelf judgment seems to be a bit one-sided. She viscerally attacked Mike Huckabee despite the fact that Huckabee grew up reading Schlafly, and in his 20s listened to countless Paul Weyrich lectures on tape.

That’s probably because the Huckster’s an idiot. In case you forgot.
