Bradley Effect or Non-Effect?

A lot of people on the left are worried about a “Bradley effect” where some people tell pollsters they’ll vote for an African American or are undecided to hide their racism and then once in the polls they’ll vote against the African American candidate.

The Bradley effect campaigns happened betwen 1982-1992 beginning with Tom Bradley’s campaign for Governor and ending with Carol Mosebly-Braun’s Senate campaign in 1992. African Americans ended up finishing far below what pre-election polls projected in a series of races for Governor, Mayor, and U.S. Senator. Will there be a Bradley effect in 2008? There are two ways to look at this.

First, take a look at recent statewide elections involving Black Candidates. In 2006, there were Black Republicans running for the Governorship of Ohio and Pennsylvania, plus the Maryland U.S. Senate race. In Tennessee, there was a Black Democrat running for U.S. Senate.

In Ohio, the final Real Clear Politics Average had Ken Blackwell down 19.4% with 37.3%. He ended up losing by 23, with 37% of the vote. In Pennsylvania, the final RCP average had Lynn Swann at 36%, and losing by 21.8%. He ended up losing by 20, with 40% of the vote. In Tennessee, the final RCP average had Harold Ford, Jr. down by 6 with 44.3%. Ford ended up losing 3 with 48%.

The one case you might make a case for a “Bradley effect” would be in Maryland where the final polls showed Lt. Governor Michael Steele down by 3.7% with 45% of the vote. He ended up losing by 10 with 44% of the vote. The authors of the Wikipedia article point out that the final polls missed the results of the Governor’s race, underestimating Democratic performance by a similar margin. So, the point here is that some situations where a person might see a “Bradley effect” may just be a case of bad polling.

So what can we say? In 2 cases, Black candidates beat the pre-election polls, in two, they didn’t. It doesn’t seem to be the case for a broad-based “Bradley effect.”

What about Obama? If there’s such a thing as a Bradley effect, we’d see it in the Democratic Primaries and there were some states where Bradley seem to be in play:

  • In California, Obama was only down an average of 1.2% and ended up losing the state by 9.6%.
  • In Arizona, the two polls before the election showed an average Hillary Clinton lead of 3.5, she won by 9.
  • In New Hampshire, pre-primary polls showed Obama by 8.3, Clinton won by 2.6, an 11 point swing.
  • In Kentucky, poll averages had Obama trailing by 29.0, and he lost by 35.6.
  • In West Virginia, he trailed by 35 and lost by 41.3.

It’s also worth nothing that Obama had some reverse Bradleys in the primary where he beat the polls:

  • Wisconsin poll averages had him up by 4.3, he won by 17.4.
  • South Carolina, he led by 11.6, and won by 28.9.
  • Virginia, he led by 17.7, and won by 28.2
  • North Carolina, he led by 8 and won by 14.7.
  • Oregon, he led by 12 and he won by 17.6.

In Southern states, Obama benefited from higher than predicted Black turnout, but in Oregon or Wisconsin, that wouldn’t seem to be a suffiicent answer. In 10 states, the polls were way off. This may be less indicative of a Bradley or reverse Bradley effect, and may instead suggest the difficulty of polling an election when you have no clue who will show up.

The four races in 2006 suggest no large “Bradley effect.” Certainly, some people voted against these candidates for racial reasons, but they weren’t trying to hide what they thought. There’s only one reason I can think of that this might be different with Obama. In the case of all four candidates in 2006, there was no major case made that not voting for Ken Blackwell, Lynn Swann, Michael Steele, or Harold Ford made you racist. The case has been made with Barack Obama.

Contrary to the opinon of liberals who are pushing Bradley, it would not even require someone being a racist to get them to lie to pollsters. Lying to pollsters is not necessarily prompted by what you feel in your heart, but you fear what the people polling will think of you if you express your opinion. No one wants to be counted as a racist. Thus, the suggestion that many votes against Obama will be based on racism may have the unintended consequence of tainting polls. For example, one need not be a racist to sense that Carol Mosebly-Braun would be a disaster in the U.S. Senate.

This seems an outside possibility, but if Obama loses, I’m sure it’s a discussion we’ll end up having.

Just Proof Polls Suck

Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Saturday, October 11th at 11:35AM EST (link)

In the coastal South with larger black populations, Obama did better. In some of the upper South states, he did a little poorer.

I am a little fascinated by the Latino dynamic. He did poorer in AZ and CA than expected. I sometimes wonder if white liberals including those doing polling assume that Latinos are as enthusiastic about Obama as they really are.

It doesn’t get much press, but their are huge racial divides growing between hispanics and blacks in dense urban areas like L.A. Latinos might not GOTV like white liberals assume. It’s somethign to watch in NV,CO and NM

I hope the "Bradley Effect" does exist.

If McCain doesn’t drop the attack rhetoric and address THE ISSUE, which I don’t see him doing honestly, the “Bradley Effect” is the only chance we have of winning.

I think many automatically assume “white voters” when they hear about the BE.

That’s far from the truth.

We don’t believe the polls when our guy is down.

But we do believe them when he is up.

I don’t think the Bradley effect is going to be very (if, at all) relevant in this election.

I have a sick and sinking feeling that Obama will win this one by a landslide.

The reverse Bradley

is just as likely as the Bradley. The lefties have called us racist so often, it could cause some to be intimidated from admitting to be Republican.

I don't know.

MrSandman (Diary) Saturday, October 11th at 1:02PM EST (link)

I can only guess that McCain believes that NV is safely his. Also, it’s clear that NV’s five electoral votes doesn’t carry the weight of the Midwest and SE states.

RealClearPolitics has NV as a tossup. I find that difficult to believe, but perhaps I’m underestimating the power of the LV/Reno unions, and other Dem GOTV efforts.

Reverse Bradley

MrSandman (Diary) Saturday, October 11th at 1:12PM EST (link)

I would never base my vote on race, nor be intimidated by race baiting for voting for my candidate….but I will admit to disowning the GOP on more than one occasion the last seven years.

I think the damage done to the GOP brand by George W Bush is significant. I’ll leave it at that please.

However I see that factor playing a big role in why McCain has seemingly never been able to grab the high ground. It sure seemed to work out that way in 2006.

The Dems did us a huge favor by running out the worst candidate they have had…since Kerry. LOL

And that was far too close for comfort.

Anyway…I digress….
Reverse Bradley…sure its possible….
But I think there are much bigger forces at play. The biggest by far is THE ISSUE.

“Americans can no longer trust the economic information they are getting from this Administration.”

Maybe it's not a reverse

redneck_hippie (Diary) Saturday, October 11th at 1:13PM EST (link)

Bradley, but someone who watched one of the so-called debate focus groups thought that the McCain supporters were very hesitant to raise their hands in support of McCain. Just a thought.

The ISSUE

being…taxes kill jobs, right?

Yes, I even here young people are worried

izoneguy (Diary) Saturday, October 11th at 1:22PM EST (link)

they had better snap out of their Ozombie stupor if they hope for a real future. The change Obama is talking about is not positive change. I was listening to a Fox show on the economy and young people were phoning in and asking if they were going to be able to get a job. One of the hosts said it would be very difficult to grow jobs in an economy where you want to raise taxes on the brightest, best dynamos for job growth.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Taxes are part of it to be sure.

MrSandman (Diary) Saturday, October 11th at 1:25PM EST (link)

THE ISSUE is what we going to do to fix the worldwide credit crisis and rebuild our economy afterwards.

There is still massive amounts of deleveraging coming. More banks, insurance companies, than comes Detroit, the airlines, CA, NY…..

….don’t forget the pension funds…

thats all before we even get to talk about Medicare, Medicaid and SS…

I honestly don’t know why either candidate would want to win.

They are walking into the biggest financial trainwreck ever created.

Are taxes a part of the solution? Sure. But I’m afraid that’s way down on the list at this point. DC is writing checks to private businesses right now. How do you think lowering taxes will go over in Congress these days?

The GOP doesn’t own that high ground anymore.

“Americans can no longer trust the economic information they are getting from this Administration.”

— Republican Senator Jim DeMint

The tax raisers must be

redneck_hippie (Diary) Saturday, October 11th at 1:35PM EST (link)

defeated. That is the only part of the solution that we get to vote for, apparently.

McCain and the RNC, RNCC, Rush, Hannity, Levin et al need to hammer continuously that in order for there to be any hope for our economy, we must not succomb to higher taxes, tax the rich, punish innovation, strangle entrepreneurship, and the rest of the progressive leftist-socialist agenda.

Bradley Effect & Polls

RMJ (Diary) Saturday, October 11th at 2:30PM EST (link)

Interesting comments.

One factor that could play a part in making the Bradley Effect hard to measure is that there are certainly people who would vote for person of Race X for Dogcatcher, Mayor, or Senator but then balk at doing so for the presidency.

The Hispanic issue is also valid and how Hispanics (especially men) view Sarah Palin is another unknown lurking.

Sarah Palin has had a profound effect on this race and it appears to me to be along class lines rather than typical liberal/conservative lines.

About the polls, I believe pollsters are having a harder than usual time getting it right this year.

They are all over the board but all of them agree that McCain is behind.

That is not good but in a year that features the most bizarre U.S. presidential election in history, any thing can happen.

It just means you have to find three more to

People tend to forget that everyone is a newbie at some point. Even he was.

I so thank the friend who directed me to this site. It’s nice to meet some like minded people for a change.

As to this topic, I think that at this point, the Bradley effect is about the only hope left but I still don’t believe it will have any or much impact on election day. McCain’s campaign seems to have been run in a real chaotic manner and there’s no time now to pull it together. Least I don’t think so.

Don't despair, Roxanna. The Bradley effect

janis (Diary) Saturday, October 11th at 2:46PM EST (link)

will account for some, if we are talking racism. But there’s another effect at play as well: many people are too intimidated to say that they won’t vote for Obama as his supporters are so often so strident.
Anecdotally, I live in Tennessee in an area that is heavily Dem. Yet many, many of these Dems will not vote Obama for a number of reasons. Yes, some of them won’t for racial reason, but many won’t because of national security concerns, his treatment of the Clintons, his stance on 2nd Amendment issues, his tax policies, his associates, etc.

One thing about Obama–he offers so much to object to! Take heart, it ain’t over til it’s over.

I'm more interested in the PUMA effect

Dems will make a big difference in this cycle. Many women I have spoken to are fans of Sarah’s, even if they are Dems. They see her treatment by the press as being a continuation of what they saw happening to Hillary back in the primaries.

And, as we all know, a woman scorned is a dangerous creature. Let’s hope that many are VERY dangerous to Obama’s chances to win.

PUMAs

John Steele (Diary) Saturday, October 11th at 3:07PM EST (link)

If even half of the women who claim to be Hillary supporters voting for McCain actually do so I can’t see any way that Obama can get even close let alone win. All of which makes on think that either the polls are all stuffed or the women claining to be PUMAs are “kidding.”

Well, John, maybe the PUMA's are one of the

reasons that Obama needs so many fraudulent voters. If he can get at least 7 million votes by fraud alone, it should negate most of the PUMA voters.

Just one more reason for the PUMA’s to double down.

the all out attempt to discredit Gov Palin. If the PUMA numbers are even close to accurate, the Obamessiah needs to convince the Conservative base to stay hope in order to have a chance.

It’s an article about how centrist Dems and Repubs together are working with the Feds to investigate the Obama campaign’s and DNC’s shenanigans during the primaries and their actions since as well.

This is one of the strangest alliances we could ever have imagined after Clinton’s two terms in office, isn’t it?

Good point, Dave. Not only are they trying to

janis (Diary) Saturday, October 11th at 3:38PM EST (link)

depress conservative votes, but I assume they hope to discredit Sarah to depress PUMAs voting for her as well. They miscalculate badly in this instance. Hillary supporters–and there are many men in this category, not just women–are further enraged by the treatment of Sarah Palin after watching the lefties savage their own candidate in the primaries.

I’m not at all sure that many people who lie to pollsters before or after they vote are doing so because they are racist or afraid of being labeled racist.

I think they do it because they are afraid of being called a… dare I say it?…

REPUBLICAN.

In this country and at this point in time, being a republican is the same as being a bigot, racist, hater, nazi, moron… you name it. If you don’t vote for this guy, you are automatically not doing so BECAUSE he’s black.

It could never be because he’s a Marxist or because his politics and stand on issues aren’t attractive to you. Although I would never vote for this guy, I was never against these people until they drew the line in the sand; everyone not on their side of the line is against them.

They have polarized this country with their battle cry “it’s us against them!”
