It’s the title of a Neil Sedaka song from a long, long time ago; before most of you were even a gleam in someone’s eyes. I’m not a Buchanan fan, but Pat Buchanan has a piece out that bears some attention. It’s titled, “Is America Coming Apart?” You can read it here if you want: http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=109478 I submit that America isn’t coming apart; it is apart. We have what, I think, Seward described as an irrepressible conflict in this Country, a conflict every bit as irrepressible as the one that America experienced in 1860. Except that this irrepressible conflict is hardly defined by geography as the previous one more or less was. This conflict is defined in our minds.
I can generally say that I have nothing in common with California or New York and even less with Massachuesetts, but there are people in those states with whom I have much in common. Likewise, the people of those states may well view Alaska as the breeding ground of troglodytes and the home of their bete noir, Sarah Palin, but there are plenty of people here who would fit right in in Berzerkley or The Village.
I don’t know how this plays out. If Comrade Obama called on the governors of the several states to provide for him the troops to suppress the rebellion in the Red States, the question would be clear, though the answers might not be. But he’s not going to do that; we aren’t a nation half slave and half free with those boundaries clearly set by state lines. We are a people who are half willing to be enslaved and half not. We can see geographic patterns but they’re generalizations. Everyone here knows Kowalski; he lives in Taxachusetts! I could very happily not be associated with Taxachusettes any longer, but I like Kowalski. You can repeat that over and over and over.
I’m thinking of this on this solemn day; the day that Comrade Obama obviously thinks was payback for AmeriKKKa’s sins against the World. I don’t want to be associated with that man. All my life I’d have thought that if I ever awakened to find a practicing communist as President of the United States, I’d be standing or lying in the rubble and dying of radiation poisoning. I don’t want to be associated with any person ignorant enough to have supported him. I especially do not want to be associated with people who openly and knowingly accept and support his goals and objectives.
This boils down to people like me are going to suppress people like Comrade Obama and his supporters or they are going to suppress us. A divided house cannot stand.

What’s happening is appalling in ways that even we couldn’t have forecasted a year ago. We knew it would be bad, but it has so far passed “bad” as to not even be in the same vocabulary.
To watch this POTUS align himself with every leftist thug and dictator in this world is to be deeply ashamed of half the population of this country, and makes me want to apologize with all my heart to our military for what this will do to them. My Gold Star mom friend is looking at her second Marine son deploying this month and she has no idea how she will get through this one. I cannot bear the notion that, not only will they not have the support and loyalty of their CinC, but that they won’t have a future worth living when they come home. I’m ready to fight just for that reason, if no other. And there are plenty of “others”.

The heavens aren’t weeping because most of the heroes of this event were those blue collar, redneck police, firemen, EMT’s, military people and the heroes of Flight 92 who were the focus of the public’s praise.
The heavens would be weeping if we had just surrendered to the Taliban and Al Qaeda that day and become a complete nation of victims, instead of a nation led by a man who took the war to the people who started it. Lastly, the heavens would be weeping if even ONE Kennedy had died in that conflagration, forget the other 3000+.

The_Gadfly (Diary) Friday, September 11th at 4:58PM EST (link)Some of us could. And to be honest, right now we are in better shape than I thought we’d be. I was almost hoping Hillary would win over The Big 0 because even though I figured she’d manage to hold onto power for 8 years, I knew with her in charge there’d still be a country left to save after she was term limited. With this guy, I’m not as certain. So, much as I despise John McCain, and much as I knew that my vote in the People’s Republic of Maryland couldn’t possibly change a thing, I voted for him (I’d like to say I pulled the big R lever with gusto, but MD was an early adopter of electronic voting). Like Art, I fully expected card check would be the first thing passed. And with their large margins I expected both socialized health care and cap and tax/strangle would be law, with ACORN set to mangle the census even more toward the Blues.
Instead, card check might not ever come to a committee vote, cap and strangle has been deferred until after socialized medicine, and even with a full court press from Obama and the MSM, we in the grassroots are still scaring the professional politicians enough that they are likely to remain in their default posture: curled up in the fetal position doing nothing while mouthing that they are considering how they will vote.
And best of all, there is a real sense of change in the air. Not the change The Big 0 ran on, the change I felt coming in 1979. True, we aren’t as fully along yet as we were then, but the change is starting. Back then you knew something was different when both Charlie Daniels and Neil Diamond had hit singles extolling America. We haven’t quite reached that point yet, but it is coming. The more The Big 0 tries to slap us down, the more our survival instincts will drive us to oppose him. Tomorrow might just be the breakthrough day. As Churchill said, not the end of the beginning, but the beginning, and while there will still be blood, sweat, toil, and tears ahead, we can make it. We WILL make it. And it is likely that we will make it for the same reason we won WWII: the sleeping giant is awakening, and the ****** (darned) fools who woke him have no idea how idea just how ****** (peeved) after he’s had his morning coffee and taken stock of what happened while he was sleeping.

From the time I reached a level where I was involved in or responsible for strategy, I always analyzed what the worst thing the other guy could do to me and the worst way I could respond to it and worked from there. It is about all that will work with elected and appointed Republicans, most of whom don’t have any overabundance of courage. You tell them very graphically all the bad things that could happen and what you have to do to keep those things from happening.
Part is it is a sort of bureaucratic manipulation, manageing the boss if you will, but the very worst thing you can do as staff is let your principal get blindsided. So, I think it is just good planning to have a plan for the very worst case and then try to do everything you can to keep from having to use that plan.

johnCV (Diary) Friday, September 11th at 10:38AM EST (link)there are two Americas. Each with thier own ‘facts’ and a rapidly widening, and I believe irreconcileable, gap between the them.
When a citizenry has been indoctrinated for two generations that it is responsible for all the world’s evils, that it is no different than some third world hell hole (and perhaps worse), that America is a glutton feasting on the earth, that there is no unique American culture – that it is simply an amalgem of immigrants… on one side.
The other side sees America as an Exceptional place. Where for the first time in human history, power was endowed by God to the people and loaned to the governement. They see America as a good place, an honest place (not perfect but better than anything else) who has sents it’s children to die to save others. A place where a man can raise himself up by his own hard work and ingenuity without interference or onerous burdens placed upon him by government. A place where a person is free to worship, or not, as they see fit – where free speech and free assembly are birth rights and not subject to the political will of leaders. A place where the Founders sought an armed populace as a check on the government.
I cannot see where these two different nations find common ground anymore.

AceInTX (Diary) Friday, September 11th at 2:00PM EST (link)This is one of those nagging things I have always slapped around and never been able to come up with a concise way top say and there you go Art…That’s a perfect synopsis to describe the devide we face today…
It goes to why I have such a hard time being willing to compromise on the Conservative vs RINO divide…because unlike the pre civil war days where citizens of northern states didn’t have to worry about being enslaved if there was a compromise allowing a new slave state into the Union…(aside from the power shift associated with having 2 new pro slavery Senators in the upper chamber)…every compromise on a candidate in a blue state who views issues of liberty and power as a tool to be used to advance themselves in the DC Power structure rather than a matter of life and death affects me directly no matter where I live because now we are talking about Government control in every state in the union
You can get all sorts of good academic arguments, Ace,
Achance (Diary) Friday, September 11th at 5:07PM EST (link)about what caused the Civil War. Millions of trees have died over whether it was about slavery, tariffs, states’ rights or some combination thereof, but I’ll posit that the Civil War came because The South simply reached the end of its rope in trying to deal with and satisfy the Yankees. Joe Wilson shouted out “You Lie” for the same reason Preston Brooks caned Sen. Sumner; he just couldn’t stand it any more.
The Left has vilified the Right and Center in this Country for decades. We on the Right are evil, xenophobic, imperialistic, racists. The Center is uninformed, uninvolved, and needs to have its conciousness raised by the smart Lefties. Christians of all political stripes are pig-ignorant theocrat wannabes. I can go on for a paragraph or two, but the point is that if you aren’t one of the “good people” on the Left, you are a subhuman, the German word for that is untermenchen, ring a bell?
God knows I’m tired of them. I simply cannot stand the sound of Comrade Obama’s voice. Listening to his lying and whining minions is like fingernails on a chalkboard. I’m simply sick of these people and I don’t want to just passively take it and try to work it out in the political system because I know they don’t respect that system and will undo it as soon as they think they’re safe in doing so. Give them an ACORN conducted census and card check and they’ll start the war because they won’t be able to resist the opportunity to eliminate all that oppose them. Invest in precious metals.

Anyway…Well done and keep the faith brother
BTW...I know you're right about what caused the Civil War
AceInTX (Diary) Friday, September 11th at 7:54PM EST (link)I’ve never been one to buy into the civil war being only about slavery…it isn’t even close to being that simple.
Slavery was a big part of it…and it was the power and money interests that finally lead to the uprising…but there were important issues that surrounded it like State’s Rights, the limits of Federal Power was chief among them…I know you know the north didn’t give a hoot in hell about the slaves at the time and the war between the states was years old before Lincoln decided to finally embrace the abolitionist cause.
I know you know the details better than I do because I take a broader approach to history while you like to dig into the specifics of certain periods but what I do know is this…I can’t say…if I had to choose which cause I would have fought for…I can’t say what the choice I made would have been.
Most ended up on the side associated with the state they grew up in…I grew up in West Virginia which wasn’t a State when the war began…and didn’t become one till Lincoln decided he needed the electoral college votes and, (it can be argued he unconstitutionally) allowed WV to become a State which was cut wholly from the territory of another sovereign state of the very “Union” he said he wished to save!
It’s one of those things where it could be argued either way…that the territory that became WV was still a part of the commonwealth of VA even though it was largely occupied by the Union Army, (to the extent it were possible to even occupy all of WV anyway). On the one hand, Lincoln said he wanted to preserve the Union….but with the other hand, he weilded a huge knife and carved off a huge chunk of on of the sovereign states that composed the Union, and he did it for completely political reasons. I guess what I’m getting at here is…despite the high ideals associated with that war expressed in history…power politics, money, and political expediency played a much larger part in it than most know today and those who do know care to acknowledge.
It’s the compromises that kill me…Jim Crow is condemned and sold today as if it were something that was decided from a pro slavery perspective when the issue was really forced by the abolitionists who abhorred slavery and all it’s evils.
The ruling helped the Abolitionists in that they were able to prevent southern slave owners from counting blacks in the census and increasing their representation in Congress…but by compromising on it the SC set the precedent that a Black man wasn’t really a person!
I think I’d have been an abolitionist but I would have recoiled in horror at the idea that any man was less than human and I’d like to think I’d have rejected the idea set forth in Jim Crow even though the net result of the decision would have helped me…I think the Abolitionists who cheered it lost their moral authority in accepting it.
On the flip side…I might have been a southern sympathiser because the state sovereignty and limits on federal power over the states was a huge issue and still is today because of the way the War was decided. With the Northern victory the centralization of powere that we see today was made possible…
anyway…that’s my two cents for what it’s worth and again…you nailed down and simplified something I’ve wrestled with for a long time with the quote I mentioned and I thank you

One one level this is very simple
kowalski (Diary) Sunday, September 13th at 9:15AM EST (link)One one level for me, the main level, what is going on right now is very simple and shouldn’t cause people to hyperventilate:
The people of this country, faced with a hopelessly weak and ineffective candidate that divided his own party, and coming on the heels of a President with globally low approval ratings leading a catastrophic economy, and elected a fantasy President (not by landslide margins!) whose opportunity arose as the result of the slickest media campaign in modern history. The media campaign was an engineering masterpiece, and it was put together by some of the brightest people working in applied behavioral science (a.k.a., academia and high-end advertising) combined with the deliberate full court press of the Society figures in Illinois. He was helped enormously by the collapse of the Illinois GOP just prior to his ambitious rise, also. Whether those events were deliberately coordinated or not is an academic question.
So Americans elected this man and they bought into the platitudes out of their discontent and because they weren’t familiar with the backstory. They opened the door to everything he believes, which I understand because much of what he believes is very close to what I believed before I joined this blog more than four years ago. Every policy he creates is going to be destructive for America as it exists today, because he believes it is fundamentally flawed. He’s Jimmy Carter except Black and from a big city.
OK I’m oversimplifying a little. But I agree with you in large part: you have to put your foot down and make a decision against this man and his policies. It’s a momentous choice, it’s like the decision I made more than 5 years ago to reevaluate the way I had lived my life and the way I looked at the world.

It has literally vanished, as though all of those people (numbering from the “many tens of thousands” to the “hundreds of thousands” and perhaps “millions” or just “thousands” if you read the AP) weren’t even there, as though nothing they said mattered and the reason so many of them showed up was a hallucination.
That’s the BBC. Their biggest headline about the United States right now is: “U.S. Plans Afghan Prisoner Overhaul.”
And this goes back to what you said in another thread here: the protest was a monumental occasion but because the media in this country and elsewhere in the world want to downplay it, we now face the challenge of translating that massive turnout and groundswell of opposition to Obama’s policies into concrete political action.
We aren’t going to be assisted by the Associated Press, the Washington Post, the BBC, the New York Times, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, NBC, Newsweek or any number of others. We’re now faced with the difficult task of maintenance, and translating the goals of this movement into identifiable political action.
But at the very least, yesterday’s protest should give Barack Obama pause. Never in my lifetime have I seen so many Conservative and Republican Americans rally together for a cause: it was an unprecedented and truly significant event. And the message to Obama should be: “It will magnify, and it will grow, and it will be repeated all across this country in the next few years.”
We need to make sure we have the will and the determination to make that happen. Our politicians need to stop sitting the fence and get on board with us.

Achance (Diary) Sunday, September 13th at 9:43AM EST (link)about ignoring the opposition unless they see an advantage. If that crowd had misbehaved, there’d be lead stories and screaming headlines about the violent mob of rightwingers. Since it was peaceful, they’ll just ignore it other than to start whispering about all the delusional rightwingers who think they had a big crowd when everybody knows the latest Lefty gathering was many times larger.
That’s the reason I got into the exchange with some fool on another thread. In a circumstance where there can be no truth, one “truth” is as good as another. I’m sick of only one side playing by the rules. When you do that, you lose and we have lost and continue losing because of the nice, fat, collegial old men who speak for this Party.

Kowalski, many were afraid that the first Tea Parties would lead nowhere,
janis (Diary) Sunday, September 13th at 9:49AM EST (link)yet here we are now with more participation than ever from a broad range of citizens across America. Don’t underestimate the arrogance of the Dems and the O’s to continue demonizing us, our views, and our leaders in their pursuit of our subjugation and financial ruin.
Want to bet that Obama and Co. just flat out ignore yesterday? He won. That’s all he knows and all he feels he needs to know. The rest of us can go take an aspirin. Or a handful of “aspirin.”
Maybe we need the t-mobile logger judge
