I know a lot of people in our community are disappointed by the disruption of events in Minneapolis-St. Paul this week but it is time for us all to focus on the potential disaster brewing in the Gulf of Mexico. History does not need to repeat itself and Louisiana is blessed to find itself in the competent hands of Governor Jindal in this crisis, who is taking aggressive action in preparation for Gustav.
We can join in the preperations by giving now, rather than waiting to see the track of the storm. No matter what, it’s going to be bad. Many Americans will be in need. Why not get a jump start and chip in today?
My chosen charities are the Red Cross and the Salvation Army, but please add links to others in the comments, especially local ones.

“Both of our political parties, at least the honest portion of them, agree conscientiously in the same object—the public good; but they differ essentially in what they deem the means of promoting that good. One side believes it best done by one composition of the governing powers; the other, by a different one. One fears most the ignorance of the people; the other, the selfishness of rulers independent of them. Which is right, time and experience will prove.”.Thomas Jefferson
McCain should invite Obama to help
easyb (Diary) Sunday, August 31st at 10:16PM EST (link)It would be a brilliant move for McCain to get on TV and encourage Obama to join him and Palin in efforts to help the hurricaine affected areas.
He would in one step be:
1. Demonstrating bi-partisanship,
2. Putting Obama in the place of following McCain’s leadership,
3. Most importantly, helping a lot of people by including Obama’s money raising abilities in the efforts to help.
that's a really good idea

America First
easyb (Diary) Sunday, August 31st at 10:46PM EST (link)McCain’s already laid the groundwork with the “America First” theme, and with his comments today that we are taking off our GOP hats and putting on our America hats. Inviting Obama to join in would reinforce the theme.
Local Organizations
mom2oneson (Diary) Monday, September 1st at 5:07AM EST (link)I live in NW FL. We have had hurricanes here and right now there are many people from LA.
I do not recommend the ARC. I know very few people (like maybe 2!) that they helped locally when we had disasters here. I know they do tons of fund raising. I’m not sure why FEMA got a bad name in Katrina but FEMA gives so much help. I would pay money to the government before giving it to the ARC LOL.
Here are a few places in NW FL that I know helped Katrina victims and I am sure will be helping those who left NO and are staying in NW FL right now.
St. Vicent De Paul
http://www.svdpusa.org/ Each parish has it’s own volunteer group but that is the main site. I didn’t see any local websites. They did so much for Katrina victims even setting up beds for people to stay in.
Waterfront Rescue Mission
http://www.waterfrontmission.org/
It’s showing up as a Christian rehab center but they have a huge thrift store and besides sales they have a ministry of giving clothing and household supplies. They have a seperate social service office on the side of the store. They are awesome.
Samaritan Hands. I don’t see a donate buttom but I’m sure if you called the church office they would know. http://www.fbcp.org/samaritanhands.htm
They help with food and clothing and shoes.
Alpha Center helps with mother/baby supplies like diapers and baby clothes. http://alphacenterinc.org/
May I have the link?

Waterfront Rescue Mission
mom2oneson (Diary) Monday, September 1st at 5:43AM EST (link)OK I found the link where it says they helps with household supplies and clothing:
http://www.waterfrontmission.org/ccc.html
They are great, they help so many people with things that they need. I’m sure they will be busy the next few weeks helping evacuees.
Sorry for the numbers in my post too. I meant to number all of them. It’s raining hard here with the wind gusts so my kitten is right here and I kept having to stop and start typing again.
Thanks for this
