Obama is a Big Black Cloud, says Ed Schultz

The below video from Breitbart.tv (h/t Larry O’Connor) shows one of the most blatant, race-baiting moments in recent memory. But not from the person MSNBC wants you to think it came from.

“That big black cloud that hangs over America, that debt that is so monstrous.” – Rick Perry

“That black cloud Perry is talking about is President Barack Obama.” – Ed Schultz

No Ed, the black cloud is “that debt”, as the undoctored video shows. Even by MSNBC standards, this selective editing by Ed Schultz, expressly to paint Perry as a racist, is pretty appalling. The ostensibly-more-credible-than-Ed-Schultz ABC News’ “The Note” blog also used the doctored quote*.

The fact that this is manufactured, however, didn’t stop some guy at Loop21 saying “Let’s hope he doesn’t actually start “hanging” these big black clouds he speaks of.” Hip Hop Wired ran an article titled “Governor Rick Perry Calls President Obama A “Big Black Cloud” which not only ran the doctored quote, but a completely manufactured one:

According to reports, when speaking of President Barack Obama, Perry referred to the President as a, “big black cloud” hanging over the country and also added that there is a “big black guy running the country and I’m not too happy about it.”

White House reporter April Ryan tweeted: “Rick Perry’s words ‘a black cloud over this country.’ He knows exactly what he is saying and appealing to. http://t.co/dd9epbl”. And dozens more such tweets from all manner of tweeters on the left.

I found some of those links, by the way, in a Mediaite article where Tommy Christopher reports all of these reactions without regard for possible context. Other than, that is, near the very end of the article, where he points out that someone else “allows for the possibility” the remark “might” have been innocent. At least Christopher made the effort to get a comment from ABC and Gov. Perry’s office, which is more than most of the lefties running with this doctored story bothered to do. But in the end, Christopher concludes that Perry’s remarks were “ill-advised, at best.” .

Far more ill-advised, one would think, would be taking the word of selective video-editing Ed Schultz, who was the only person in all of this to actually call Obama a big black cloud.

Update: Philip Klein at The Washington Examiner points out Obama used a similar metaphor in 2009:

And we must make it clear to every man, woman and child around the world who lives under the dark cloud of tyranny that America will speak out on behalf of their human rights, and tend to the light of freedom and justice and opportunity and respect for the dignity of all peoples.”

Update 2: Tommy Christopher corrects the record at Mediaite.

*Update 3:ABCs The Note blog has since updated their post to include the full intent of the quote.

Wow - in 3 days Perry has set the libs heads on fire

izoneguy (Diary) Tuesday, August 16th at 5:43PM EST (link)

15 months to the election – This will be a marathon that the libs will lose.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Oh geeze.. they are going to run with this one.

Hopefully, it will get stomped out pretty quickly.

Other lies being spread as well

Went to the ABC Note link and someone was also claiming that he wanted Texas to secede from the union — another lie. Next I guess Matt Damon will be on the air spreading that lie like he did with misinformation about Sarah Palin.

I just wrote and complained about this editing monstrosity to Ed and his producer. I hope he gets a landslide of discontent on this one. Too bad we cannot do a recall election on Ed Schultz! But then we would have to do one on Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews, etc. We wouldn’t have time to fight to put strong conservatives in office like we now have the opportunity to do. Another day at the office.

It’s obvious that the left believes they should be able to control not only what we call “marriage,” but also the full range of language and its idiomatic usage. Misquotation is par for their course.

That’s right, Will-bur. That’s what you get when your news comes straight from the horse’s other end.

At face value, possibly. Is it so, Flagstaff?

According to the American Heritage Dictionary of idioms,

This expression dates from the days of open-hearth cooking, which blackens practically all the utensils used. [Early 1600s]

There is nothing racist about it–it just means the speaker is replying to someone who has accused him of doing or being something that applies equally or more so to the accuser.

Seems to me..
But Thank-you. The idiom came through generations… and although we had a share of serious rednecks, confederates and indian fighters in our family…I never knew of any of them that held a grudge.
I started hearing the term as far back as I can remember, and it was always applied in a humorous way. Never in a vindictive or hateful tone.
I was also tossed outta RCP comments, probably for the same post.
I don’t feel like it is worth the effort to build an alternate ID to get back in.
Heck, I was tossed here twice… but I came crawling back, and it was explained to me where I went wrong… and no bad blood.

jaykali (Diary) Tuesday, August 16th at 5:46PM EST (link)

He is a bit, just like Bill Maher. If he didn’t say shocking things he would be even more irrelevant than he already is. I get more angry when Democratic politicians take the bait and start playing the race card as many do all the time. They have done it so much I can’t imagine that it really has any effect though anymore.

NOTE: Saying black in any kind of negative connotation is racist, even though ‘black’ is like a pretty common color and also used in many phrases.

Therefore the following phrases are therefore banned:
+Black cloud
+Black hole
+Black sheep

Also ‘dark’ is also racist so here are a couple more:
+Dark cloud
+Dark day

Now note that none of these above rules apply to liberals. They can say what-evah they want, including violent rhetoric, like calling Republicans terrorists.

Also isn't it great that liberals 'translate' racist things for us?

jaykali (Diary) Tuesday, August 16th at 5:48PM EST (link)

Bc sure, there isn’t much said that is explicitly racist. Thank God we have liberals who are smart enough to decode these secret racist things Republicans are saying.

The goal is more malignant

civil truth (Diary) Tuesday, August 16th at 6:13PM EST (link)

There is an ongoing goal here, which is to convince some 35-40% of the population that conservatives/Republicans are irredeemably evil, period. Not simply wrong, in their view, but evil, not entitled to a public forum. And a conviction that cannot be shaken by reason. Even 25% would be a strong starting point.

Then since those folks are securely locked into place regardless of how you change your message, you then can use all sorts of manipulations and dishonesty to move the other 10-15% needed.

You may get some whimpers from secure group, but you can ignore them or feed them some red meat because you know they will never vote for a Republican.

And if a Republican does get elected – well that’s a different topic that I won’t get into, but we’ve already seen the prototype following the 2000 election.

The poisoning of the well already has begun in earnest

civil truth (Diary) Tuesday, August 16th at 6:03PM EST (link)

We are now at the beginning of what will be a massive effort to define Perry as a racist, by starting with his being a Southerner and then providing repeated confirmation of that bias through deliberately misquoting and or misinterpreting his statements to construct him as the racist that “everybody know” Southerners are (but only if they are Republicans).

This is only one of the labels that will be thrown at him; the others are totally predictable

This will only escalate throughout the campaign. The aim, though, is far more malignant that trying to win an election – the goal is to make Rick Perry unable to govern even if he is elected through this character assassination.

JSobieski (Diary) Tuesday, August 16th at 7:12PM EST (link)

We ALL know that the left would go after ANY conservative in a harsh manner. That was never the issue.

Rather, the issue was would Palin be able to build support among independents in a media environment that is uphill for any conservative. Palin has fairly entrenched negative favorability numbers among those independent voters. Many people (including myself) reason that the task of persuading the public on issues such as medicare reform is hard enough as it is, and that the extra hurdles of Palin’s negative favorability among the independents (a category that excludes liberals and MSM personalities) was an uncessary burden.

You remind me of intro to econ students (like Obama) who don’t understand the difference between moving along a demand curve and a shifting of the demand curve. It may sound like mere nuance in the minds of some, but the phrases actually mean things that are significantly different from each other. Summarizing either as “you end up with a different number” just doesn’t cut it.

But if you want to bring those who disagree with you on tactics and analysis (but not ultimate goals) down to your own level of analysis . . .

You are so right! Those of use who supported Palin’s campaign for governor in Alaska despite living in the lower 48 . . . we just hate her and thought that the MSM would love Governor Perry. Yup, that is exactly what we thought! I guess the plan we had is just no good. dang it!

Rule #5: If you are using the language of the left, you probably aren’t furthering conservativism
Rule #6: The priority is issues first, candidates second, and supporters third. Nobody is bigger than the issues. Conversely, if you spend your time focusing on supporters, you are wasting everyone’s time.

MSNBC

californiagold Tuesday, August 16th at 8:20PM EST (link)

As many of you are aware, MSNBC isn’t a news organization, or even an entertainment network. Rather, it’s a media arm of the democratic party. The top management of the network openly support Obama, and the talking points start at the top and work their way down to the on air talent. In fact, the entire NBC news division has developed a clear bias. The only differences between NBC and MSNBC are that MSNBC is much more blatant in their bias – nor do they even attempt to project themselves as journalists.

Each day for the next 15 months MSNBC will attempt to broadcast a daily talking point that goes negative on republicans. Those talking points might even have untraced roots directly from the democratic party. Republican candidates better prepare themselves for some of the most negative and dishonest attacks this nation has ever seen coming from MSNBC. The far left media knows that If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.

It will be forums like RS that will need to expose the truth.

The Perry campaign needs to point out that Obama use the same metaphor in 2009.

Agreed.

This kind of thing must be confronted. The way to conquer a bully is to fight back. If they start to fear lawsuits then their bottom line may rein them in a tad.

I doubt Rick Perry cares to court much of the national media---that leaves him free to retaliate, and I expect that he will

smagar (Diary) Tuesday, August 16th at 10:42PM EST (link)

If I recall correctly, in his last election for governor, Perry blatantly ignored the TX media, even the conservative-friendly outlets. IIRC he did it boldly and deliberately.

If Perry takes that same kind of screw-you attitude toward the national media—especially those MSM elements that are open D supporters (like NBC)—that leaves him free to retaliate.

Imagine David Gregory’s Meet The Pressfuture interview of now-POTUS-candidate Perry. Perry can bring up what Ed Schultz just did and ask Gregory on-camera to defend it. When Gregory tries to change the subject, Perry can refuse and press Gregory for an answer.

Gregory can then either endorse the way the video was edited…or toss Schultz under the bus on national TV. (Oh come on—that’s “MSNBC”, not “NBC”).

Either way—would you want to be David Gregory? Would you want to be an NBC executive whose wife will have to endure icy glares from the other shoppers in the Whole Foods checkout line, if you don’t “stand” with Ed Schultz?

Perry should make it very clear that he’d love, just love to talk to David Gregory or any other NBC News talking head.

If our candidates fight back, I think the MSM will stop this kind of stuff. Vain people don’t like to be made fools of in public.

I’d love to have someone like Perry call them on their false reporting.

I’d love to have someone like Perry call them on their false reporting.

Perry is a born and raised Texan, not an import.

Did you hear the reporter pressing Perry on the “we need a president who loves America” remark he made in Iowa?
(paraphrasing)
Reporter: “Were you implying Pres Obama doesn’t love his country?
Perry: “I can’t speak for the President – you ask him.”
Reporter: But isn’t that what you were implying?”
Perry: “I’m saying you’re a good reporter, you ask him.”

He will attack. And, unlike GW, he will fight back when attacked.

I think Barack Hussein Obama IS a big black cloud...

IronDioPriest (Diary) Wednesday, August 17th at 12:26AM EST (link)

…hanging over America, and I am unashamed to say it; undaunted by race-baiters who would apply a racist connotation.

I know what I mean, and it is high time that people take back language from those who wish to control it for their own evil ideological ends.

President downgrade exemplifies the very worst of Leftism, and lays its evil bare for all to see. He personifies a black cloud blanketing this country, in the traditional sense of the term.

When he and his Leftist ilk are relegated to the fringe of society along with the KKK and the NBP, the black cloud will be lifted. Until then, we struggle for the very future of our nation.

“If we finally fail in this great and glorious contest, it will be by bewildering ourselves in groping for the middle way.”

Thanks for the laugh this morning. :)

It's Perry's turn in the barrel...

jeffreyrbrady Wednesday, August 17th at 10:29AM EST (link)

The media has always taken shots at the newest up and coming worthy candidate. If they can make it stick…it’s news. The simple fact is that if Perry is “your candidate”, you will likely not be swayed by the media BiaS. From Alaska to Minnesota and now back to Texas. However, I hold expectations that more will stick with Perry than slide off. After all, he knows the campaign playbook inside and out of both Democrats and Republicans. Now if he can remember which one he is supposed to use, he might have a shot at V.P. Ever since I was old enough to know right from left and right from wrong…I was a conservative and needn’t be reminded. PerryCare for teen girls could be a big issue! But hey…at least he admitted he was wrong…or was he using the other campaign playbook?

If you mean outright lying through their fracking teeth, then I agree.

“Main stream Liberal News media” You can fill volumes with what they don’t report. Which is to say the truth.

Why deny it?

Obuthead is the Black Cloud that hovers over America, and the rest of the liberals are the hail falling on our heads. Who freakin’ cares if it sounds racist? This racism scrap is nothing more than big kids calling each other names. Liberals need to grow up; something that will never happen!
