House Passes Iran Election Resolution

The House today voted to support Iranian dissidents and “all Iranians who embrace the values of freedom, human rights, civil liberties and the rule of law.” The resolution
(H Res 560) passed with 405 yea votes and only one nay, and two members voting present.

As I said earlier, and as many of our Representatives emphasized today, this has nothing to do with supporting Mousavi. In fact it offers no commentary on Mousavi whatsoever. This resolution is about supporting the cause of freedom. As Congressman Pence stated “The cause of America is freedom.”

Click through for some other floor speech excerpts I thought noteworthy. And here are Pence’s full closing remarks:

.

Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-NV): “It takes an enormous amount of courage to stand up to your government in a repressive society.”
.

Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-NV): “I am personally in awe of the Iranian people and hope others will learn by their example.”

Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) “The Iranian regime’s brutality is on full display for the whole world to behold.”

Rep. David Scott (D-GA): “It is important that the world understand that America is indeed that shining light of liberty and of freedom.”

Rep. Howard Berman (D-CA) “This resolution is not about American interests, it’s about American values”

You can continue following the aftermath of the Iranian election on Twitter.

Update: The sole no vote was Ron Paul (R-TX); the present voters were Brad Ellsworth (D-IN) and Dave Loebsack (D-IA). (SOURCE)

Please Tell Me Who The 'No' Vote Was!

IJB Friday, June 19th at 12:00PM EST (link)

I’m dying to see which troglodyte stands with the oppressors. (Perhaps it was Ron Paul again?! Or perhaps Kooky Kucinich?!…)

My guess from the AP stuff...

evanm (Diary) Friday, June 19th at 12:09PM EST (link)

Is Keith Ellison (D-MN).

Ah, The Muslim Congressman! Even Better!! (nt)

His comment...

evanm (Diary) Friday, June 19th at 12:22PM EST (link)

was

“It’s important to not allow the Congress to be used in what is essentially an internal fight in Iran,” said Ellison (D-Minn.), one of two Muslim members of Congress. He said Congress should “not allow ourselves to be used” against the people it is trying to protect.

Sounds like the meme floating through twitter about how Obama’s silence is justified so that Khameni can’t claim the CIA is propping up the protesters.

Which is my nominee non-sequitur of the year.

Personally, I Hope Whoever Ellison's Opponent Is in 2010...

…Isn’t afraid to run ads that point out that Ellison stood with the *Mullahs* over freedom fighters that the rest of Congress unanimously supported.

It’s the kind of ‘divided loyalty’ meme that should give even some MN lefties pause.

It's the kind of meme...

that isn’t even true. Link below.

Yes, Apparently Ellison Got This One Right

Hurray.

Too bad he’s still wrong on pretty much everything else.

Your first post is to defend Ellison

I have been a very long-time reader of Redstate. I haven’t really contributed much because, well, I guess I’ve been timid.

I have a good back and forth going with e pluribus unum in the original thread about Rep. Pence’s resolution. I’m not trying to troll or anything, just learn and discuss. Cheers!

I stand corrected.

evanm (Diary) Friday, June 19th at 12:56PM EST (link)

It was Paul, which probably makes more sense anyway.

Not Ellison

Mario (Diary) Friday, June 19th at 12:34PM EST (link)

Nay vote was the little dude from Texas (I guess he only wants freedom for himself). Voting present were Ellsworth (D-IN-8) and Loebsack (D-IA-2).

Probably could have included a link

What a worthless putz he is.

I can’t Imagine a democrat saying this in Obama Age “It is important that the world understand that America is indeed that shining light of liberty and of freedom”

WOW…

This was robust debate and we did not want to meddle…. Right?

This is what TRUE bipartisanship looks like. Sponsors from both parties and overwhelming support on both sides of the aisle. Not one party sponsored and written legislation that gets a couple of votes from the other party.

The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in times of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality.

Congressmen, Thank you for voting for freedom!

Now remember Americans want freedom, too!!!

Ronulans better stay outta my face

I had a perfectly sane conversation with a auto dealer finance manager Wednesday, in the Bronx no less, who simply detests what is going on, has a visceral loathing for all that we here loathe, etc. Unfortunately he brought up the whackjob in positive terms and I tuned the rest out.

This whackjob is so wrong on defense, foreign policy, anti-terrorism, and liberty for others in the world, that I don’t want to hear another word from his fans. He’s an insane person with a thin veneer of sanity and same goes for his idolators. Shame on him for his vote on Iran!

Government cannot be the solution when government is the problem.

Sigh.

liandro (Diary) Sunday, June 21st at 10:36AM EST (link)

Since I, and my thin veneer of sanity, are both currently on our second combat tour in Iraq, I’m somewhat limited in how I can respond (rules and all that). I guess I’ll settle for pointing out that completely tuning out people who–in your OWN point of view–share a great swathe of your own views is rather self-defeating.

It blew my mind how quickly certain segments of my own party where willing to go irrationally close-minded in their alliances despite an election that clearly called for as many votes as we could get. As a small business owner, citizen of a state in dire need of better parties (IL), two-tour combat vet, active voter and campaigner, and possibly after this tour an actual candidate at the local level…I am incredibly frustrated by the sentiments you have just made. Take that for what you will.
