Bipartisan Resolution to Stand With Iranian Dissidents

Congressmen Go Where Presidents Fear To Tread

The unrest in Iran continues apace, and while the media coverage remains sparse, word nevertheless gets out of Iran thanks to our modern age and, in particular, to Twitter. As Moe notes, the situation is complex. The cast of key figures holds few heroes. But then, it’s not really about Mousavi, is it?

It’s about the thousands of individual Iranians, from citizen reporters on Twitter to underground hip-hop stars, who believe their vote, and voice, should matter. It’s about the fact that they are taking to the streets in protest for that right. It’s about their belief that they ought to have a say in their destiny and their government. It’s about a Muslim nation with a rogue government being stalled and thwarted by thousands of citizens demanding their individual rights be honored.

On both the right and the left, on the blogs, at twitter, among the pundits, this is largely a shared sentiment. Sure there are some who cynically object – ignorant celebrities or Obama loyalists. But for the most part, the web has seen a sea of green in support of the people of Iran exercising their right to self-determination. And now we see some in Congress standing up.

U.S. Congressman Mike Pence (R-Ind.), Chairman of the House Republican Conference, and Rep. Howard Berman (D-Calif.), the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, have introduced a resolution that goes where the President fears to tread: explicit support for the Iranian dissidents. Said Congressman Pence:

“This is an important moment for the Congress, our country and the people of Iran. For days hundreds of thousands of dissidents have taken to the streets of Iran in support of freedom and democracy. The American cause is freedom and in that cause the American people will not be silent. I am honored to join Chairman Berman in offering this important resolution. The joint resolution I and Chairman Berman introduced will give voice to countless Americans who stand with the Iranian dissidents as they stand up for freedom. I urge Members on both side of the aisle to support this important resolution and I hope for its immediate consideration.”

So far, support for the dissidents in Iran from America has been largely from inviduals, bloggers, twitterers, and pundits. Congressman Pence’s resolution will be the strongest official response to date.

Click through for the reported text of the resolution:

RESOLUTION

Expressing support for all Iranian citizens who embrace the values of freedom, human rights, civil liberties, and rule of law, and for other purposes.

Resolved, That the House of Representatives—
(1) expresses its support for all Iranian citizens who embrace the values of freedom, human rights, civil liberties, and rule of law;
(2) condemns the ongoing violence against demonstrators by the Government of Iran and pro-government militias, as well as the ongoing government suppression of independent electronic communication through interference with the Internet and cellphones; and
(3) affirms the universality of individual rights and the importance of democratic and fair elections.

Congressman Pence adds:

“I really believe we may have an opportunity for a fresh start here, not with the tyrants in Tehran, not with Ahmadinejad, who even looks at what this administration is doing and accuses them of meddling, but rather with the good and decent and courageous people of Iran who are stepping forward and risking their liberty and their lives for principles that we as Americans cherish.”

Ace of Spades and Allahpundit fear the day dawning in Tehran may bring a new Tianamen, and maybe it will. But one thing we’ll know from now on is that the people of Iran, like the people here in the United States, can and will demand their voices are heard, whether an oppressive or overly-expansive government wants to hear them or not. And that’s something we can and should support.

What Pence and the others are trying to do will go one of two ways. Either 1) it will be brushed aside by Bobby Gibbs as sort of a fringe effort, or 2) it will make the administration look like a bunch of clueless babies, such as the world has never seen. Personally, I’d put my money on option 2.

Maybe it’s just because of the obscene hour, but this is the first thing I can think of that Obama won’t be able to make go away with fancy rhetoric and pixie dust. It’s happening on the other side of the world, and even in the face of deadly opposition, word from Iran is getting out! Obama can’t shut down twitter, or bloggers, or any other media source that is managing to get the real story out there. This is a HUGE deal, not only because of the nuclear crisis, but because of the human aspect of this. What we’re seeing is people being gunned down in the street, and thousands of protesters fighting back! That’s not something that happens because of a “robust debate” over an important election.

I really admire the Congressmen for standing up with this. I, for one, am going to stand by their statement, and by the Iranian people, until the very end.

Go Green!

Adjoran (Diary) Friday, June 19th at 1:50AM EST (link)

RedState should follow Instapundit’s lead and change the primary color to green in solidarity with the people of Iran, whose repression we have tolerated far too long.

Iran was our closest ally in the region, and we enjoyed a strong cultural, trade, and security relationship until addle-brained Democratic foreign policy neophytes decided the Shah was bad on human rights. Oh, he wasn’t nearly as bad as our other Muslim “allies” in the region, and most of those he sought to oppress were the Islamic extremists we see in charge today, the spiritual brothers of al Qaeda, the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas, and other murderous gangs.

Unfortunately, at the moment which might offer the Iranians their best chance to throw off the yoke of theocratic dictatorship, America is once again led by leftist morons who couldn’t find their own buttocks with both hands, a map, and a 30-minute head start.

We all

We all need to support this. But, it won’t surprise me if the Mullahs unleash the private army on this (I can’t remember what they are called but it is made up of thousands of teens to 30 something males, subsidized by government into “community clubs” that are authorized to commit violence on behalf of the Mullahs) not to mention the official army.

The violence may ramp up soon, I fear.

watching the events in Iran with a pen and notebook, feverishly jotting down what seems to work for the mullahs in suppressing any notion of freedom amongst the citizenry there. So maybe the name of the “community clubs” you mentioned is something like “Iranicorps” ?

we on the right made the argument of who would Bin Laden vote for…I think we should ask the reformers if they really want our backing. Individual American support is great…Official US gov’t support might be the Supreme Leaders best weapon in his arsenal AGAINST the reformers…Let us not act rash in an effort to score political points. Most Mid-East experts agree with a hands off approach

Which 'experts,' seabass?

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

It turns out you don’t really care for disagreement or discourse. We must all parrot or be damned. I have no interest in being your cheerleader, but if you would like honest debate then maybe I will come back.

This is why the Republican party is dying by the way….I offer a counterpoint worth debating, you threaten my account. I am a believer in the free market, and I will be taking my posts elsewhere.

I am sure you don’t mind seeing as how you are willing to Banhammer me for offering debate.

I see how shallow and insecure you are now

Debate?

you said mid-east experts say. I am still waiting for those experts names which I am sure Neil is as well. You are still here and he hasn’t banned you yet.

You gave an opinion and that is fine, but do not use experts say, unless you have the names. That is what lazy journalists do when the story does not fit their bias; however, if a number of experts prove their point they will not use the excuse that experts say for the counter argument.

I’m banning you because every post you made yesterday morning made it clear you were pretending to be a Republican.

You idiots really are bad at that. And no I’m not telling you what tipped me off.

At several points during Khamenei’s speech, the assembled crowd broke out into loud, seemingly-orchestrated chanting. Television cameras panned across the sea of supporters as they passionately shouted “death to America,” “death to Israel” and “death to the U.K.” ~ Fox News

Hands off approach really seems to moderate the Supreme Leaders!
