Dems Doubling Down On Rush Push

It of course goes without saying that the war on Rush Limbaugh is continuing apace. Democrats are nothing if not committed to untenable positions. The more untenable the better, in fact. As we’ve endeavored to point out here at Redstate, this is all a White House distraction tactic, and it’s being executed by friendly media taking directions. The left online, naturally, jumped on board faster than a Democrat on a filmmaker. It’s simple to understand, really. They don’t want you to think about Obama’s broken campaign promises and inept first month. So they need a distraction. They have replaced the B with an R in their favorite distraction action: hobgoblinery. (Well it sounds like a real word!)

So it should come as no surprise that they would be anxious to dismiss as false the news that Limbaugh is benefiting greatly from their assault. Their narrative only has teeth as long they believe that they are marginalizing Rush and, therefore, Republicans and conservatives everywhere, as cartoonish and grotesque creatures. As soon as Rush says he is gaining audience the petulance sets in. The “nuh uh” impulse, particularly in the blogs and the Oval office, is strong.

So, leave it to Tommy Christopher to give the liberal blogs just what they were salivating for: a story in which he accuses Howard Kurtz of making the whole thing up.

Here is what Kurtz originally said:

By one measure, Rush Limbaugh is a clear winner this week: His ratings have nearly doubled since his feud with the White House burst into the media limelight.

Now Christopher:

This is a specific, measurable claim. The word “ratings” is not some kind of pliable, esoteric concept. It refers to a specific type of measurement. So, what ratings was Kurtz using? Arbitron? Nielsen? Zagat?
snip
Here’s how strong Harrison’s “research” is: His own magazine wouldn’t cite it without sourcing the quote to Kurtz’s article!

Christopher argues that the circular references call the data into question. He then produces an email exchange with Talkers Magazine‘s Michael Harrison, the original source of the information.

The follow up article in today’s Washington Post basically says it all.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/03/06/AR2009030603435.html

Keep in mind, I was only referring to Limbaugh’s numbers this past week during the extraordinary media frenzy about him and that Talkers magazine is not in the business of selling ratings. They are only our thumbnail estimates based upon our contacts in the field, tracking of Arbitron estimates and understanding of the business. We make no claims as to “scientific” accuracy. The act of listening to the radio is not connected to any meter or box office. Radio listening is thus unmeasurable in precise quantifiable terms. Thus all estimates are just that, estimates.

Michael Harrison

P.S. Perhaps the following link to a page on our website will be helpful as well…

http://talkers.com/online/?p=71

And so it is that Christopher has determined that the whole thing is a lie. Predictably the left-o-sphere is abuzz, and I’m sure we can expect Kurtz to make “Worst Person in the World” Monday.

Frankly, however, I find a number of problems with the left interpretation. First, let me say it’s clear that Kurtz was not correct when he referred to the numbers as ratings. Ratings are a specific thing, and as Tommy Christopher correctly points out, the estimates quoted by Kurtz are not that specific thing. They aren’t, in other words, official. They aren’t ratings.

Now that the technical error is out of the way, the question that really matters is whether or not those numbers are an accurate reflection of what benefit Limbaugh is gaining from the White House led death charge. Is not the whole point of the Kurtz quote that Rush is gaining popularity? Does the fact that the information isn’t some official “ratings” somehow prove the whole premise false? Well … no. Of course not! Christopher has merely proved that Kurtz was a klutz who called something ratings which was not, in fact ratings.

I’ve seen this strategy of marginalizing Rush’s popularity before. Over at the Daily Beast, Max Blumenthal published a story claiming that Rush is less popular than Bill Ayers or Jeremiah Wright, something I thoroughly debunked here and here. I spoke with Blumenthal on the phone, in fact, and he agreed that his story was wrong, and that Limbaugh was actually not less popular than either of those two. Of course, it doesn’t matter. It’s a Known-Fact™ still in use by the other side. Lies becoming truth is a specialty on that side of the political spectrum, as they continue to prove.

In this case, the problem isn’t one of facts, but conclusions. Talkers Magazine is widely respected. When they talk about what the market is doing they are received authoritatively. A quick Google search shows the magazine is frequently cited as a reliable source. From Tommy Christopher’s article:

Michael Harrison: Yes, they are not “ratings” per se (as in Neilson or Arbitron). They are Talkers magazine’s estimates of audience figures based upon our interpretation of Arbitron ratings and other marketplace factors. You see, Arbitron needs to be “interpreted” when dealing with the complex task of estimating nationally syndicated hosts.

“Based upon our interpretation of Arbitron ratings.” The case that Harrison presents is very simple. No, it’s not a census. Yes, we think we are in the right ballpark. Yes, Limbaugh seems to have benefited. Pretty straightforward to me. He’s big in the headlines this week, makes sense more people are listening, no?

I asked Mr. Harrison if he thought that his numbers weren’t very accurate, as is implied by Tommy Christopher’s story. “If I didn’t believe that they were an accurate estimate of whatever the elusive truth about radio listenership actually is, I wouldn’t publish them,” he said. “It comes down to this — Arbitron does not do national rankings because it is complicated and not cost effective for them to do so. We do our best to do it for them based on their local surveys which have to be translated through a somewhat complicated process to represent a national list.”

The left hates Rush. They can’t stand him, and they can’t stand that people like him and listen to him. So it must be killing them, then, that the only good gift Obama has been able to wrangle up this month was more listeners for Rush Limbaugh.

Me? I’m loving it.

Tommy Christopher seems to take it personally when some figure on the right has a higher profile than he could ever hope for. What a surprise. Maybe he can have his own show on Air America if it’s still on the air somewhere?

Purely anecdotal, our daughter and son-in-law are now listening to Rush. Prior to the CPAC speech and the kerfuffle that resulted, they only listened to Mark Levin. I absolutely believe more folks are tuning in to Rush. For the past week I’ve hardly been able to wait for each show.

The thing to remember about Dems and the Drive-Bys, now more than ever, is they lie and project. White is black, down is up, less is more. Hear and read what they say and write and know the truth is 100% the opposite. Never fails.

If one believes that non-stop barrages of right wing propaganda on all the available radio stations does not affect the population who listens to it, then I have some beach property for you in Tucson. The problem with right wing radio and media is that they end up boring their audiences so quickly that the only way they can differentiate themselves is to be outrageous and absurd. The more outrageous, the better. I spend a lot of time driving rural America and Rush and his kind fill up all the available radio stations in almost every market. What few stations are left are usually either Mexican or Christian radio. If you put the likes of Hannity, Coulter, Savage and Rush out there to represent you, expect to hear some push back. Lefties have finally decided to fight back and as with most bullies, these people cry foul and whine like the cowards and charlatans they are. Drop these people and get back to real ideas or the GOP will end up like the John Birch Society.

No-one wants to listen to someone constantly whining about everything, which is what the Lefties did/do…. They have ZERO sense of humor, especially when it comes to laughing at/about themselves… They’re constantly looking down on everyone insisting they can’t do anything without their Liberal saviors (read: failures) to protect them from themselves and everyone else (all that Race, Class, Gender, etc…. dividing/baiting gets tiring even to Liberal listeners eventually)…. Liberals have no sense of making things informative, yet entertaining – Lefty rantings are just plain BORING (Tom Likus was fun for awhile, he had some entertainment value at least, but all those other pesky down-side items always catch up with a Lefty which then they cannot, and will not ever, keep an audience). Last, and certainly not least, is that all the other MSM is Lefty loon biased and Lefty Radio is way overly redundant then – people can listen to the Liberal whine watching any Network TV station (or CNN, MSNBC, etc). The Lefty spin/slant can often be heard on many Radio stations across the country already during the breaks (for news, which some stations use as counter, “Fairness Doctrine” type Liberal spin to counter, the message that actually sells and pays the Bills at/for the station, but the Liberal news folks can’t stop themselves from Editorializing rather than “REPORTING” Facts/Truth. We can all hear the bitterness in their tone as they slant it, deluding themselves into thinking they actually do somehow “counter” the Programming.

The bottom line is Kurtz, Mr. Reliable Source, did goof insofar as relying upon “ratings” that were not “ratings” per se. However, in the final analysis, a reasonable person listening to Rush (and I’m a daily listener) and paying some attention to the news would know there’s going to be a spike. I don’t agree (this is no friggin’ shocker to those who might know me) with Rush, but, I listen to him and find him… amusing.

Bottom line, Rush is gonna make out like a bandit on this. He already gets paid, what, some 35 million dollars a year plus? Good for him. Make money. However, as a matter of thinking a spike in ratings equates to a shift in the electorate and how they view Rush or Obama because of Rush is quite another matter. There’s absolutely no logical basis in relevancy for that contention.

What can I say? I’m a glutton for the knowing dissemination of funny hyperbole.

The reason I responded to this post is because I think it right there seems to be a lack of presence on the radio of Bizarro Rushes. There’s a market for it too. One would have to be as ruthless and as good at communicating as Rush and it would fly. Being politically correct, believe it or not, is not part of liberalism as far as I am concerned. P.C. is the bastard offspring of liberals who forgot about the First Amendment. True liberalism encompasses unfettered free speech, humor, etc. Hate speech one ought not engage in, however, folks are quick to brand others as racist when in fact they might be dumb or have the intent to be humorous. Either way, that’s not my point.

Move over Rush. There’s a new, non ultra right or ultra left, sheriff in town. With the best radio show of all time. I’m smarter than you Rush. I’m better than you Rush. And I’m ready to debate you next week on my turf. Are you gonna answer? No. Why? You’re scared.

Hype? Excellent

People actually tune in from here? Great. Thanks for trying and commenting. See if you enjoy it next week.

Didn’t even know there was “hype” for me — although that’s to be expected. It’s me we’re talking about after all.

So, one commenter wondered if I’d last more than a couple of posts here. Check This is number three. I don’t know what happened before on here, but, a tabula rasa seems entirely fair.

Shorten the show’s intro… Will do. Although, I need to find the fade button on the switchboard. The Red State broadcast has one and why the internet is in the tank for Red State is beyond me.

Redo the show’s intro… In progress. If you ask Caleb, I’m extremely Hawkish and have a very different philosophy from others. Seriously, the first show will focus on a defense of torture. It gets a bad rap. The “ticking clock” hypothetical is not debated enough and the empirical proof that torture works is actually there. To accompany the torture dialogue, I’m thinking the theme from The Smurfs would work well as an intro.

Hopefully I’ll book some different sorts of guests. I’m more into the satire and comedy angle of politics. I offend everyone equally. I have an extremely warped sense of humor. The radio website will boot me before Red State does.

Thanks for replying. I’m pretty sure Caleb will vouch for me. I’m not a complete idiot and when I am a complete idiot, I think y’all will enjoy the schtick.

Howard Kurtz -- Reliable Sources

cube Monday, March 9th at 11:01AM EST (link)

I come down on the side Caleb does insofar as Kurtz’ error was just that — an error. In the final analysis, Rush (who I listen to daily) will make tons off of this. We all agree Kurtz goofed, but, in my opinion, it was a harmless goof and not malicious.

Despite this, I do love the irony of Kurtz not being such a “Reliable Source.” I’m not sure whether his show, “Reliable Sources” has been canceled by CNN, but, if you’ve ever watched him before, judge his credibility. He’s soft. “Lies” and Kurtz go together like sandpaper and sanitary needs. Kurtz used to examine other shows and test their validity and accuracy on reporting. To me, that’s the funny part of the story. His goof, and that’s all it was, belies the very name of his show — Reliable Sources. Or former show. I’m not sure.

Kurtz kind of states the obvious anyways and the research he relied upon, while technically not a “rating” per se, does not lead to a conclusion where (all due respect) his findings are “lies.” Simply, the analysis has “harmless error” as we say in the law. It reminds me of the old Carlin bit about errors in baseball and penalties in football. At most, this was an error.

The real issue, if we agree there was a dramatic spike in listeners, is whether that will in any way equate to a shift one way or the other in the electorate. I doubt it. People already have their views staked out. The “centrists,” in all likelihood, will not shift to the right or left because of Rush. There is however a small amount of potential harm to the GOP in that it seems unclear who the party leader is from the perspective of a reasonable person.

Steele is the leader. This “perceived” dust-up ought not preclude him from leading. He just started. Did he make some mistakes? Yes. Does that call for a firing squad? No.

The hype was your own posting claiming to be better than Rush.

Sorry, I couldn’t get through more than 2 minutes of the intro. I have no idea if you’re better, worse, or equal to Rush. The only thing that was evident was hype. Shorten your intro and I might stick around long enough to find out if what you had to say was worth a listen.

Caleb may vouch for you. The only reason I even bothered to give 2 minutes was because Caleb’s name was associated with it.

I’d really like to see some numbers on the economic impact of legalization and the riddance of paternalistic laws.

Insofar as those doling out the prescriptions, a few thoughts. While this might not alleviate your concerns, there are doctors (M.D.’s) who open up these pain management centers. I do criminal defense work and know exactly what they do. They sell pills. Far worse than weed is synthetic heroin. This fact does not dejustify your argument, however, that is a far more dangerous setting than a medical like coffee house.

Further, what’s the worst that could happen, the “pharmacist” gives you too much weed? That’s a bad thing?

The propane argument: Real quick, at some point, don’t you have to put faith in the liberty of others not to abuse things? By your logic, we could never sell beer. All due respect, the propane example is a bit extreme. Also, the law has safeguards in place already for this type of misconduct. I don’t want a pharmacist doling out meds who is popping percocets like M&M’s.

In the end though, if the safeguards are in place, and I’m reading you right, you agree with me.

But distraction for too long without substance will be too much for Axelrod’s sleight of hand to overcome by 2012. BO was right when in the primary he stated that he was riding the wave towards election. The economy by then will be worse or even than it is now and no matter how much the spin, people will be miserable.

In the end, he’s too dumb to figure out what the economy needs and all he’s doing (in a time of genuine need) is what most first termers do-angle for reelection.

"distraction for too long without substance" -- bingo

Obviously, I have a deep-rooted biased viewpoint, but I don’t see how attacking Rush 20 months before the next election day makes any sense.

Could you make a case for a short term bounce through this tactic? Sure.

But for 20 months? Through this strategy, the Dems are helping to highlight the differences between their lefty policies and a conservative that does not have to make ANY political compromises. I think all that comes out of this is, yes, there’s a big difference between Democrats and Republicans (and BTW, Democrats now own the economy), and at the very worst, Rush is the “bad cop”.

Fast forward to 2010. The Dems social engineering has not worked, the economy is a downer for Democrats, Americans are more aware of the Democrat/Republican distinction, and all the Republicans have to field for candidates is that “bad cop” Rush. Oh wait. Rush isn’t running. Dooh!

2010 is now, and 2012 is year after next -

If you hold executive office, the only time you can get anything significant done is in your first year and maybe your third if your friends in the legislative body did well in their election. 2nd and 4th years are just election time and courage is real hard to find.

The Obamunists know that the big stuff has to get done NOW, so they need an economy in crisis and they need their opposition if not neutered, at least divided and distracted. They owe their constituencies a bunch of payola; that’s done with Porkulus. They owe the unions Card Check, that’s coming. They owe the unons and other lefties nationalization of health care and some if not all retirement plans (Nobody’s talking about it, but most defined benefit retirement plans in America were insolvent BEFORE the market tanked.). They have to do it now, and they’re focussing on fixing Rush in place because as the Shamesty Bill showed, he is the only person in America capable of mass mobilization of the electorate.

If they don’t get that stuff now, their base will at best be unmotivated in ’10 and the backlash potential is immense in both ’10 and ’12. If they do get it, card check and nationalized healthcare/retirement will give them power for the foreseeable future.

Rush

edward_cropper Saturday, March 7th at 9:48PM EST (link)

The left for the most part is preaching to the choir about Rush. If a rational person knows who Rush is they have probably already made up their mind about him. Good , Bad or indifferent.
For those who have never heard of him or only know him so so this is a golden opportunity for them to listen to a few programs and maybe become Limbaugh fans.
The left really hates Rush because he is the most influential commentator on the air bar none. Not because he is always right or even always temperate but because he is the most fluid commentator in broadcasting and his zeal is very obvious and effective.

He’s definitely good. Pretty, pretty, good. I mean, he has a golden mic for a reason. Agree or disagree with him, Rush is very persuasive. He is the great communicator. An important quality. Crucial to capturing the minds of youths. Too bad he wasn’t a community organizer before his brief stint on the radio. I don’t care about his lack of experience. I like listening to him. Rush 2012. He should be pulling in the next generation.

Radio and listeners to Rush is important to businesses that advertise...

DONTREADONME (Diary) Saturday, March 7th at 11:05PM EST (link)

so, the assumption that measures of radio listenership is somehow an arbitrary guess is just a way to placate yourself if you hate Rush Limbaugh. Why, because listenership is important especially if you are a business that wants to advertise to the largest group of people as possible. And, it also determines who much money radio stations that play Rush charge for advertising during the show. Plus, it also determine how much Rush is paid during contract negotiations. Geez, demoncrats, do a little thought experiment.

If you prefer fantasy over fact, stop reading!

Michael M. Keohane (Diary) Saturday, March 7th at 11:41PM EST (link)

It is a major Liberal assumption that Rush Limbaugh’s audience is composed of poor, illiterate, trailer park trash. However, advertisers would not pay good money for such an audience. Advertisers want audiences of well-heeled consumers for their products and services.
To get advestising time on the Rush Limbaugh program, advertisers have to pay top dollar. That means, the market values the Limbaugh audience. As most of the audience surveys show, the Limbaugh audience is made up of well-educated, well heeled consumers.
Sorry, Barrack, the market knows best and, as a result of your free publicity for Rush, his audience will grow.
I first heard of Rush Limbaugh in the early 1990′s from one of the “usual suspects” in the New York City media. The media elitist was saying so many mean and nasty things about that Limbaugh guy that I went out of my way to listen to his show.
Rush is not perfect, no one is but, among political commentators, he has a better reliability and accuracy ratio than most. He, like Frederick Bastiat, uses satire and other forms of humor to instruct as well as entertain his audience. Because the truth often hurts, Liberals consider him to be mean and spitefull when his arrows of wisdom hit home.

Do not classify the words or deeds of your opponents as being hatefull, malicious or criminal in nature if they can also be easily characterized as simple ignorance or gross stupidity. Anon.

Exactly, right, could not have said it better...

Actually Caleb, the White House doesn't care

David Hinz (Diary) Sunday, March 8th at 11:36AM EST (link)

The White House doesn’t care if their attacks on Rush Limbaugh result in increase listenership for his program — in fact, it works to their advantage.

They are first of all engaged in Saul Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals” principle of personalizing and demonizing their opponents. By creating the strawman of Rush Limbaugh as the face of the GOP, and aided and abetted by the Tommy Christopher “True Believers” in the media, they divert American’s attention away from their own failures to address the economic crisis created by Democratic policies of the past two decades.

The second, and just as important result of their attacks on Rush, is justification for introduction of “local content” or “diversity ownership.” Despite their efforts to paint the “Fairness Doctrine” as non-partisan, enough Americans know the truth for that dog to hunt.

Instead, they will slide it in below the radar with arguments that nationally syndicated talk show hosts like Rush do nothing for the local community. The greater Rush’s audience becomes, the more they can justify their actions, and quite probably ram their changes through.

the backfire will be the "diversion" of the deep recession and given Rush's debate challenge

Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Sunday, March 8th at 12:57PM EST (link)

It will make them look puny when they try and hush Rush. It will look like they are afriad of Rush and debate with the GOP.

But this has all been tried before against Rush and failed during a good economy! Their threshold for attention diversion born of the natural honeymoon with a new president is closing fast judging by the dems that are starting to get vocal about the carbon tax and the budget and the stock market.

Whether or not they can ram radio regs or much on any of their agenda thru

Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Sunday, March 8th at 1:02PM EST (link)

is quite un-related to this strategy, in my opinion. They have the numbers in Congress and they control the FCC or will soon. I don’t think this attack on Rush changes the liklihood of their overreach potential, their liklihood of success in Congress, the FCC and certainly not the Supreme Court.

They have been overreaching since they took office, before the Rush kerfuffle.

They look puny. Like a donkey fiddling while Wall Street burns. See recent ramirez cartoon:
