Like Joe the Plumber, Americans who oppose the One are beginning to understand the level of retribution you can expect at the hands of religiously devoted followers. One red-blooded American feeling that pain right now is Republican Michele Bachmann of Minnesota’s Sixth Congressional District. Having angered the devout, her race for reelection received an injection of tithes to her opponent’s coffers, much of it courtesy internet cesspool DailyKos.
You see, last week on Hardball the Congresswoman committed the cardinal sin: she questioned Obama’s ties to Ayers and other extremists. Bachmann called anti-American views anti-American, and called liberals liberals, and asked why liberal Obama was hanging around with anti-American radicals. This is, of course, an excellent and pertinent point, and one which the Congresswoman made fearlessly in the lion’s den.
Naturally, Democrats reacted with apoplexy. For you see, observing the waters Obama has chosen to swim in is the same thing as the Salem witch trials. Within hours, Bachmann’s Democrat opponent Elwyn Tinklenberg had over $400k in donations to his campaign. After two days the amount was around 700k. Tinklenberg posted a blog at DailyKos praising the generosity of the kossaks and their righteousness in fighting the evil Bachmann.
Question not The One, for we are legion.
We can’t afford to let a dedicated conservative Republican become a casualty of The One’s Holy War. She’ll need donations in kind to fight the left now, so she can keep fighting the left in Congress and even in the heart of the lion’s den going forward. Watch the video and tell me you can go another second without donating to her campaign. I can’t. RedStaters, we need Bachmann fighting for us. You can donate here to help ensure she can.

Thomas (Tom) Ferrero Tuesday, October 21st at 10:17AM EST (link)when Bachman let “Tingle-boy” railroad her down the anti-American track. She seems like a fine conservative voice to me, but did not handle the interview very well. Calling for in-depth investigations of congress for anti-Americans is over the top, especially on a public forum. What she should have done was say something like this…
“I am not saying anybody is anti-American. But the American people have a right to ask questions when a presidential candidate will not wear a flag pin, or put his hand over his heart during the pledge of allegience, or associates with anti-American radicals. These are things that individually, for the average American, would be within the range of views extant in America, but for a presidential candidate, very odd. It would seem that you would have to have some pretty strong motivations driving you to turn away from the obvious easy path of wearing the pin, putting your hand over your heart and avoiding associations with terrorists, and put yourself in the position of having to answer questions about it. Americans want to know what are the motivations? A clear answer might make the questions go away. I have not heard one yet.”

I Agree
Doctor Biobrain Tuesday, October 21st at 10:22AM EST (link)Whether or not it’s truthful to say that Obama is anti-American is besides the point. A majority of Americans seem to like him and know him better than they do someone like Bachmann. So having her come out and imply that his views are anti-American only makes her and her party look bad. Perhaps Obama is anti-American, but that’s not a concept that most Americans really understand. Most folks aren’t hearing about the stuff that you’re hearing, and so having someone suggest that Obama is anti-American on Hardball just sounds a bit crazy to them; akin to the libs who demanded Bush’s impeachment back when he was popular. And her call for a “penetrating expose” to find anti-Americans in Congress didn’t help matters. Again, to the typical voter who doesn’t already believe Obama and Dems are anti-American, this stuff won’t resonate.
Besides, apparently even Bachmann has walked this back, saying “I’m not saying that his views are anti-American.” And that’s the reason she shouldn’t have said it in the first place, because now you’re getting the worst of everything. She’s now in a position where she has to backtrack what she said. And that generates news stories which repeat her initial claim, make her look like a liar, sound supportive of Obama, *and *require Republicans to throw money at a race that should have been a slamdunk; all because of one remark that wouldn’t convince anyone to distrust Obama.
And so the question is: Is it enough to support politicians like Bachmann simply because libs are against her? People can support whichever candidate they like, but I’m telling you, Bachmann didn’t do Republicans any favors with her statement. And if this were reversed, you’d be praying for more Dems to galvanize Republican support in this manner.

Thomas (Tom) Ferrero Tuesday, October 21st at 10:50AM EST (link)You are missing my point. I could care less about flag pins. I don’t own one. What I am talking about is the motivation behind resisting the wearing of it at the time that it is raised as an issue, or the motivation of not putting the hand over the heart during the pledge at a public gathering in front of cameras, or associating with radicals. Maybe these are non-issue, benign acts, or maybe not. But the fact is that regular Joe-American types – like me – wonder why. Is that hard to fathom?
Bachmann was on target with one part of her comments. If McCain had disrespected some liberal icons or hung with white supremicists, the press would be all over it, dissecting it from all sides and connecting it to all kinds of other ominous shadings in his past or comments. And, in fact, they would be justified in their probings.

Patriotism
Thomas (Tom) Ferrero Tuesday, October 21st at 11:28AM EST (link)is a relative term in America, and that is good. We have a wide range of ideals and so people’s definitions of patriotism vary widely. Being a patriot does not mean that you love all things American. Some liberals love our civil rights laws and hate corporate America. Some conservatives love our freedom and hate the freedom usurping bureaucracy.
But beyond patriotism, it seems to me that our greatest divide is socio-economic. Liberals want more “social justice” than is currently granted by our constitution as interpreted by the courts, despite the cost to the economy and other freedoms. Conservatives want as much “social justice” as can be gained while preserving our economy and our other consitutional freedoms. The former will lead to economic bankruptcy and social chaos like we saw in the Soviet Union. The latter leads to the most just society possible without creating a dictatorial bureaucracy ala Kafka (in my opinion the last 8 years have been a weird combination of the two, I’m sad to say). Obama is the agent of the former in this election, and McCain, though I wonder about him sometimes, is the agent of the latter, or at least the agent of resisting the former.
This election comes down to choosing a European style social democracy or continuing to try to refine and perfect our imperfect, but superior capitalist republic.
So do I question the patriotism of those that would impose socialism on America? Yes. Socialism is clearly anti-American. That does not mean that you cannot be a socialist and a patriot, but if you are, in my judgement, you are missing the point of what America is and has been since 1776.

Obama Wears Pin
Doctor Biobrain Tuesday, October 21st at 11:42AM EST (link)Actually, I believe that Obama has been wearing a flagpin for quite awhile now. Here’s an LA Times Blog Post about it from back in April. Supposedly, the pin was given to him by a diabled vet who didn’t want the controversy to distract people from the issues or something. And he definitely wore one during the debates.
And really, I’m not sure if I understand your logic for why Obama needs to wear one and you and McCain don’t. So if people started accusing you of being unpatriotic for not wearing one, you’d start wearing one? That seems like an odd reason to do so. You should wear a flagpin if it makes you feel better, not because people are attacking you for not wearing it. Especially as I see this as a sort of slippery slope to the point where we all have to wear special costumes to prove our loyalty or something. As for myself, if someone attacked me for not wearing a flagpin, I’d laugh in their face and tell them to buzz off. Fortunately, this has never happened, as Obama seems to be the only person required to wear one.
And frankly, I think there are far more pressing matters than what Obama wears on his lapel and that you’re kind of wasting your time with this sort of thing. Perhaps Obama’s clothing accessories worry you, but I suspect that most Americans are more concerned with what Obama is planning to do and not what he’s wearing. After all, if you set the bar for patriotism this low, all he has to do is wear the pin to prove his patriotism; and he seems to have done that. I don’t think a simple flagpin proves or disproves patriotism and that this issue distracts from bigger ones.
It's actually very simple, DoctorBiobrain.
Moe Lane (Diary) Tuesday, October 21st at 11:59AM EST (link)Democrats need to prove that they’re patriotic as the next fellow; Republicans need to prove that they’re not racists. Therefore, Obama needs to wear a flag pin, and McCain does not: and McCain needs to quickly pushback on anything that might be seen as being racist, while Obama does not.
This is simply the way things are, so deal.
Moe
PS: If you think that I’m joking about this… have Obama stop wearing a flag pin, and see what happens.

No Pin Needed
Doctor Biobrain Tuesday, October 21st at 12:42PM EST (link)Oh, I know you’re not joking. Even as it is, Obama’s been wearing a flagpin for months and he *still *is accused of being unpatriotic for not wearing one. And seeing as how most conservatives believe that McCain shouldn’t be accused of racism either, it seems we should be in agreement that this is an unfair system.
I’ve always been more of the mindset that someone actually has to do something unpatriotic or racist to be accused of that, and that once having done so, wearing a flagpin or denying being racist shouldn’t be enough to change that; but apparently I’m in the minority on this. This is an always guilty even after proven innocent situation and too many folks seem happy with that system. If someone wants to see McCain as being racist, there ain’t a damn thing that can be done about it.
But as I said before, I think attacking Obama on this was a mistake. Again, all he had to do was start wearing one and the whole argument flies out the window. And I don’t think any of this resonated with voters at all, as a majority still seem to like him. And if Obama really is anti-American, his lapel is the least of our worries. But the main point is that the pin proves nothing as anyone can wear one. People should always use the best argument they’ve got, and if in the short time you have to convince someone that Obama is dangerous, you tell them about his lapel, they’re unlikely to be convinced. Words and deeds are evidence; not clothing accessories.

The American people don’t take criticism of their favorite leaders kindly. Conservatives were on the receiving end of such devotion just a few years ago and they pissed away the people’s trust and devotion. Now it hurts to see the same devotion redirected.
Ehhh, what's up, doc?

Wake up!! There are indeed people even inside our own government who have cheered for our enemies and betrayed their nation. One of them is Jack Murtha…another is John Kerry..still another is Harry “the war is lost” Reid…..shall I keep going?
Sorry if I didn’t have my pinky out when I sipped from my teacup, but I have spent the last 8 years dealing with traitorous little scumbags doing everything they can to help America go down the crapper.
When President Bush said “you are either with us or against us”, I chose my side.
One more thing you should be aware of, The Oath of Office states that we are to protect the constitution for ALL enemies, foreign and DOMESTIC. Why do you think those are in the oath? Maybe, just maybe, someone had the foresight to understand that some of our enemies are indeed DOMESTIC enemies.

LibRick (Diary) Tuesday, October 21st at 2:46PM EST (link)Matthews roped Bachmann, She was put on the spot and defensively responded, but clarified after, and now it’s taking up much blog oxygen.
To the Right — If Bachmann’s intent was to help McCain as a surrogate, which, at this point, is to sway independent/undecided voters, she didn’t do it. She should know better. Now she does. She will still win her district.
To my fellow Lefties — It doesn’t show much confidence in Obama if you jump on a “throw away” statement just to make a point to the choir. You won’t find that choir on Redstate. Bachmann’s statement was no worse than statements which come from our side everyday.
To fellow Lefties on this site — Be respectful and don’t purposely antagonize on this site. It is a conservative forum. They generously tolerate us and genuinely consider our opinions. If you need to torture logic for a point in a post, don’t. They will see it in a heartbeat. So play honest.

julatten Tuesday, October 21st at 3:13PM EST (link)and I say this as a lefty. To be fair, Obama has come out against it, but some rightly question whether he would be able to resist a Democratic congress on the issue.
I really see a danger with the FD — makes no sense to me. it’s kind of a horrible hat-trick: it a) insults the intelligence of americans, b) assumes lefty ideas are inherently less appealing/communicable and thus need “help”, and c)micro-manages the free press.
oh, and d) is irretrievably stupid.

Bachmann is Embarassing
Bill Bryan Tuesday, October 21st at 3:50PM EST (link)Lost my old RedState account in the redesign, and now finally got around to registering for a new one.
I’m voting McCain/Palin all the way, and Republicans straight down the ticket, but I am not voting for Michelle Bachmann, she’s an embarassment whose only major bill had something to do with light bulbs. There is a better choice.
Aubrey Immelmann, sensible Republican, has decided to challenge Bachmann again (after failing to best her in the primary). Immelmann is a moderate reformer and professor (from my alma mater!) who reminds me of one Sarah Palin (although not nearly as attractive).
The 6th District has better options than Bachmann and Tinklepants. Write in Aubrey Immelmann for Congress.

So, maybe they were banned, not for their statements about Bush or speaking out about the administration, but they were dropped because their former listeners had no use for them and their anti-American statements and chose to just ignore them.

Opposite Reasoning
Doctor Biobrain Tuesday, October 21st at 5:55PM EST (link)Uh, Lord Vegas? Perhaps I could have written that more clearly, as I was actually saying the opposite of that. I was saying that if someone did something unpatriotic or racist that “wearing a flagpin or denying being racist shouldn’t be enough to change that.”
And the point was that wearing a flagpin doesn’t really change anything. Not having a pin doesn’t make one a terrorist any more than having one forgives terrorism. It’s basically a non-issue that became even more of a non-issue once Obama started wearing one. And that’s why it probably shouldn’t have been brought up in the first place. IMO, there are much more important things to discuss than what’s on a man’s lapel.
Just give us two years
MuskegonCritic Tuesday, October 21st at 5:56PM EST (link)I remember the Liberal sentiment at the time was that a posse of Bush supporters and a conservative media were out to destroy anybody who might publicly oppose Bush. Now I’m hearing the same noise about Obama from the Right. The terror you feel now about an All Liberal Gov is the terror we felt about an All Conservative Gov.
Look, you had your time to create a conservative paradise. It didn’t work so good. Abortion is still legal. Violent crime is up. Government spending and the deficit is through the roof.
Don’t worry about the next four years. If we screw up you can have the same “Told Ya So” moment Dems are having right now and maybe we can find a completely different direction that suits us all.
Not Condescending
Doctor Biobrain Tuesday, October 21st at 6:14PM EST (link)Not at all. My point was that most Americans don’t really have first-hand experience with outright anti-Americanism. They’ve never seen someone burn a flag, or spit on a soldier, or openly incite violence against our government. Because that’s what I think of when I think of what “anti-American” means. And even the lesser stuff, like what you might find in a dairy on DKos isn’t really heard by most people.
And when they see Obama, they see someone who sounds intelligent and reasoned, and who says good things about our country and sounds hopeful towards the future. So tossing the “anti-American” label at him doesn’t really make sense. And sure, *you *have a different opinion of Obama than they do, but it’s because you’ve heard things about him that they haven’t. And perhaps if they heard these things as often as you do, they’d also think that calling him anti-American makes sense.
But the label itself does little for them, because they don’t read RedState. They’re not hearing much about Ayers or ACORN or Wright, and what they do hear doesn’t seem to bother them. Even the folks who watch CNN regularly aren’t as exposed to this stuff as you are, and most folks don’t watch CNN regularly. Most folks barely hear about this stuff at all and are much more likely to learn about Obama from a friend who supports him or TV ads. A Leno joke about Obama or McCain is likely to have more impact than anything Blitzer might say, because people who watch news are more likely to already have their minds made up. And so far, they seem to like what they see, as evidenced by Obama’s high approval ratings.
And just so you know, I actually had thought of explaining this in my post, as I thought that sentence seemed a bit vague. But it was already too long, and as you can tell, the explanation was also very long. But I wasn’t suggesting that people were dumb for not understanding what “anti-American” meant. Just that they don’t really see things that way or associate the nice man in the commericials with anti-American radicalism. And if they did, they’d be more likely to read RedState more often and would have a different attitude towards Obama than they do.
lol. Its bound to happen sooner or later, too

I see your point
Bill Bryan Tuesday, October 21st at 7:31PM EST (link)While I certainly understand the need to keep some balance in Washington, it effects me and residents of the 6th a lot more than that. We could use a sensible Rep who works for the issues of the district and not someone who clamors to be on Hardball so she can say outrageous, kerosene-on-the-fire, kind of statements.
And Immelmann is a Republican, not third party, though I understand he would in effect be a ‘third option,’ as he failed to secure the nomination. But that doesn’t scare many Minnesotans. We use third options around here to keep the other guys in check. Jesse Ventura did this terrifically, until he went bi-polar on us.
And it seems 3rd party folks in MN are as conservative, if not more so, than our GOP folks. I like Norm Coleman, he’s a tremendous public servant, but anyone would be hard pressed to prove he’s a real conservative. In the debate before last, Dean Barkley (the 3rd party guy) made a passion and cogent argument that the Constitution is not a living document, and he would support only Justices who interpreted the Constitution for what it is and always has been. Coleman largely sat on his hands. But this is me just letting off steam. I’m voting for Coleman in two weeks and I think he’s an honorable man.
Bachmann just has to go though. If the GOP embraces people like her, God help us. We will lose many, many elections. We need some smart reformists in power, and we’ll need people who can work with the Dems and their majority.
I am the old Bill Bryan. RedState member for over two years. Moderate Republican who knows McCain will be a great President.
