(I don’t know if I am authorized to institute an open thread, but here goes)

The color guard for the Super Bowl opening ceremony will not be allowed to stay & watch the game as in times past. Just an easily-corrected oversight, I’m sure – completely unintentional.

But the highlights of the last week are even better (and probably worth a diary…)

NYT gets $250MM from Mexican billionaire at LoanShark rates.
NYT sells their share of their Manhatten HQ builiding.
Moodys downgrades them.
Stock closes at $5.75, a new low.
Moody’s expects their ad revenues to decline an additional 10% this year.

I’d give anything to be a fly on the wall at Pinch’s house when the family shows up for a visit. The stock was at $50 in Jan 2004. Heh.

I also forgot some stuff. Like they’re trying to sell off their stake in the BoSox.

I’d actually love to see the “real” financials at the Times. You can bet the stuff their giving up for pubic and investor consumption is the best case scenario and isn’t even close to what they know reality is going to look like. I’m guessing this is going to shape up as a really really really ugly year for them.

The really interesting undercurrent in all of this is the Mexican dude. He is the largest single shareholder at about 7% plus the $250MM in warrants that make the junk bond rates look really good by comparison. Even though he holds Class B stock – no voting rights – his warrants should give him a big say as to what happens operationally on a day-to-day basis. I’m guessing he is going to be causing Pinch etal major heartburn in the not too distant future.
